  • Hello Skaters! Welcome Back! Today is the start of Ice Dancing at the 2022 Olympics and I am so excited to watch! Ice Dancing is broken up into two events, first is the Rhythm Dance, then we have the Free Dance. Today I am going to try and help you understand what makes ice dance so unique, and what is required of the Rhythm dance. I hope you enjoy!

    As a Canadian, I really miss T&S performing with their wonderful artistry and chemistry, but I'm excited to see what other teams will present in the free dance tomorrow

      It's always sad to see the legends retire. Excited to see tomorrow's free dance as well!

      Agree! But this Gilles/Poirier duo is so tender sweet and emotional, and their outfits are also on point this season. Loved their free dance too.

    Thank you for this. I was a competitive ice dancer for years & it drove me crazy when people didn't understand. Would love a video on the difference in skates used for each.

    Thank you for this! this is my first time watching on a streaming service so I can watch replays on demand instead of missing a few events each olympic year, and this was my first time seeing rythm dance and although it's really cool and fun to watch, I couldn't 100% tell what the technical scoring entailed since there wasn't any commentary over it.

    I'm so happy with the results ☺️ Papadakis/Cizeron is somewhat unreal, their skating skills, artistry and synchronization went way beyond that of all the others pairs in both rhythm dance and free dance.
    Big up to Chock/Bates, well-deserved 4th place, even though to my mind their free dance was way more expressive and spectacular during that team event. ❤️

      Congrats to the other teams! well deserving. Feel sorry for chock & bates though. I think if they had a better program for the rhythm dance, they would have been more competitive at the Olympics. Hopefully you will learn from this and try out for the next Olympics.

      @@michelleinfo-vlog2449 yeah I was also rooting for them but those first three couples were just another level, best luck next time, they are so cute.

    I am completely in awe of the balletic perfection of Papadakis & Cizeron. They are so ethereal. If not for the costume breaking issue in their rhythm dance at the 2018 Olympics, they could have been double Olympic gold medalists. Not to take anything away from Virtue & Moir, but P&C move me like no other dance team. I also really miss the Canadian team of Weaver & Poje. Their “Vivaldi recomposed” and “Bitter Earth/Max Richter” free dances from 2016-18 are my favorite free dances of all time.

    Hi Coach Julia, I've learned Swing Roll, Progressive.. from your past video good stuff. But my partner doing a snake dance on my shoulders while I'm trying to skate? Can't wait to watch the show, thanks Coach!

    It might be confusing to say the man is not allowed to lift above the head because they can as long as their arms are not straight and/or the arms straightened part is transitory. I only mention it because Maddie and Zach have such a lift in their free dance that is quite noticeable.

    Hi Coach Julia,
    I'm fairly new to ice skating and love your videos. Can you please do a video about the final position of jumps/spins. I'm not sure it has a name but it would be a backward inside edge with "checked" arms.

    Do ice dancers usually come from a figure skating background or a dance background? Also, is there crossover between skaters who do both rhythm dance and pairs?

    • @eljj7968
      @eljj7968 2 роки тому +1

      Rhythm dance is just the first of two required programmes for ice dancers, not a separate category. Ice dancers do rhythm dance and then free dance in one competition. Pairs do a short programme and a free programme. Pairs and dance are completely separate disciplines, so no there is no cross over.
      Ice dancers are figure skaters and it takes many years of training (not quite sure what you mean about coming from a figure skating background). They will generally also do training in different types of dance to help their skating.
