Making a secret door in library shelves, rolling ladder and domed ceiling

- This library was built during Covid lockdown. The library shelves, secret door, rolling ladder, as well as a domed ceiling [see: • DIY library ceiling do... ] have turned an old milk bar in Melbourne, Australia into a contemplative space where my wife and I begin and end each day. It feels like a space where ideas are free to roam. The shelves cover 3 of the walls, so the ladder had to go round the curved corners with swivelling rollers. The fourth wall is a window onto the street where the seasons are marked by grape and wisteria vines and we watch our neighbours passing by.
Many thanks to our son Jack Pockley for all the lifting, to Susan Pockley (my wife) for a beautiful window treatment and all her help, to Josh Hazendonk for electrics, and to Bryan McKenzie for his generous expertise with the ladder rail and the fabrication of the swivel mechanism that allows the ladder to roll around the corners so effortlessly.
A gradual process of sifting and sorting books is proceeding. Perhaps they may eventually find their places. Visitors are always welcome.
Note: background music 'Flirting at the Masquerade' is licenced as free to use by Franz Gordon.
I'm in fucking love. God damn I would love this in my house!!!!!!!!
Congratulations on your wonderful creation. Thank you for taking the time to share it. Now I have to get to work!
Phenomenal craftsmanship, sir. Bravo.
Absolutely beautiful work.
What a fantastic room!!
So talented
The fact you put All orange books on the book case that is a swinging door makes it stick out like a sore thumb. Other then that you did an Amazing job 💜
Penguin Classics are light. Even though you'd think it was obvious, you'd be amazed at how many visitors can't find the secret door when I test them by asking them to show it to me. I think they think it just a collection of Penguin Classics. Hidden in plain sight.
