The Chateau-sur-Mer was built for William Shepard Wetmore from 1851 to 1852 as a summer house or "cottage" as they were know. It was completed by architect and builder Seth Bradford.

I love these clips of 'cottages' - when I lived up in CT for a year (many, many years ago), my parents came to visit and I took them to Newport. Completely fascinating. What struck me most of the tours we did was the commentary of how the mansions were built to take advantage of the winds and thus, where the parents "lived" versus the children. I believe we visited the Chateau-sur-Mer as well and what struck me before I was told was how it wasn't "near" the ocean; however, they owned most of the land to the ocean and sold it over the years such that it was just a quaint mansion. I forgot it was a forever home and one of the first built in that area. Thanks again.

We have a village here in Michigan called Wetmore. I wonder if there is a connection? I would venture it had something to do with ships( being close to Lake Michigan) or lumber, rather than the China trade (although ships are related), when it was founded.

The pity of this mansion was that Miss Wetmore left the whole estate to SPNEA (now Historic New England), but they couldn't afford it so it was auctioned off and the original furniture dispersed.

How do you come up with that observation? I don’t get it.

@@PierreRepooc There is literally a copy of the hellenistic Dying Gaul marble statue in the art gallery. There's also a print of the piece on one of the desks.

Many thanks. I guess I was concentrating too much on the filming to notice. A good reason to go back and revisit the mansions again.

I wonder if it was a dynastic joke: "We toured France and when we left, it died."
