I would love a mix of the Rung and Cybertron Primus. Maybe have Rung be an avatar he uses to observe his creations while his main body was in stasis mode.
I actually thought of something similar. though my idea also ties Primus with the Quintessons in a way that the fanbase might deem a *bit* controversial.
Primus ranks as one of my favorite fictional deities. Kinda hard to say why considering that he actually doesn't do a whole lot in TF as a whole beyond existing and being a key figure to its lore, but he's still up there. I think it's the fact that he transforms into a freaking planet that clinches the deal.
@jockadoobee Lmao well when put it like that, yeah. I mean deities that are not from any ancient religious texts or ancient legends and myths. Referring to stuff that was created by a modern writer of fiction, so this would include stuff like Primus from Transformers, Mata Nui from Bionicle, Arceus from Pokemon, etc.
What I love is that he's consistently a heroic dude. In a lot of media where the God creator figure tends to be villainous or antagonistic, Primus stands out by consistently being a kind and caring God who wants nothing but the best for his people.
My suggestion is that the Lore is that the Bayverse versions of both Gods can only temporarily kill each other Using the Matrix of Leadership, Bumblebee becomes Rodimus Prime and permanently kills Unicorn, only a powerless spirit remains of him Bayverse Primus congratulates Rodimus for doing the impossible
I’d like to see Rung return as an emissary of Primus. Not a Prime, but as the first Transformer he made so he could forge artifacts like the Matrix and Solus’s hammer. While the Primes remain the chosen ones of Primus, Rung is like a Hermès who serves Primus. In golden age Cybertron he became a psychiatrist to help his brethren and once the war breaks out he is tasked by Primus to deliver the Matrix to Alpha Trion and then take the Key to Vector Sigma off world and out of Megatron’s reach. Inevitably to seek refuge on Earth where the war comes to him. An alternative is he chooses to take the weakened Primus’s spark into himself to preserve his life force until Cybertron could be restored. Once on earth, Primus would reveal himself to Optimus Prime when his need was greatest. Rung’s story ends when he sacrifices his own Spark to allow Primus to create a second Matrix, an Energon Matrix, so both Optimus and Rodimus can use their combined powers to end the war. Cybertron is restored and Primus returns to the core.

Excellent video, Chris. To answer your question on favorite origins, I won’t lie, my heart still goes to the multiversal singularity seen in the Unicron Trilogy. I do like elements of the Aligned Continuity version as well, though.
Especially since the singularity is still definitely a thing, all universes had their own origins for primus and unicron anyway so nothings different, all the aligned continuity did was let authors do whatever they want without worrying about the fans going "but that doesn't tie into the singularity", and how in the world would the star saber ever have enough power to do that? Did primus AND unicron just decide to commit suicide? Why do they still show up in almost every universe? It's just so authors don't have to worry about becoming dc comics
But if Primus is a multiversal singularity, doesn't that mean he's creating an army of trillions of powerful robots across the multiverse? Seems a little suspicious to me...
As much as I loved the character of Rung and the twist in the story kinda do like Primus more as a planet sized god. I mean I could easily see Rung as something like a Headmaster but as the Omega Lock and not know he is, if I was to do a series with him.
I like the idea of rung being a construct of Primus to watch over his creations while in deep stasis and witnessing the events that shaped the face of Cybertron for eons
I was hoping you'd mention Primus the Order Bringer from Shattered Glass :P have you ever considered a Cybertron religion episode. They've created a few interesting bits of mythology over the years

Hot take Rung's adorable wholesome kindness works better as a personality for Primus than just a booming voice and authoritative sentences. However, if he is ever Primus again it'll need to be done differently because of how well MTMTE/LL did it.
I want more Rung in things. He’s such a sweetheart who genuinely cares about people. I don’t care if he’s Primus or not he should just be in more things.
IDW`s Rung always was one of my favourite characters. And when it turned out that he was Primus all along... It was kinda unexpected, but I liked this twist.
Aww Rung is so sweet, one of my faves too. I was surprised by the storyarc too, but I prefer him like this, to the large god he was portrayed as in earlier incarnations😊
@@basedpota honeslty i say if rung does return has primus but has a god just make it say that he just made himself a new body and just go round in the background helping people
I remember reading the IDW issue when everybody was fighting to use the Matrices to defeat the Faux-Primus. It was such an awesome moment. It honestly recaptured the fealing of that moment when Optimus showed up on earth in the first movie, I even had the song playing in my head.
Thank you SOOO much for the episode! Taking a break from making a full course pasta dinner from scratch. This was a delightful breather! (IDW's take was my fav interpretation. Rung is a great character.)
See? That's how you write a deity. I know some "geewuners" hate Rung, and call him a "self-insert" of the writter, but i think his presence in the comics gave the characters new dimensions personality-wise, the fact that he got a figure in the main toyline is something that puts a smile on my face for holding the IDW comics as my first step into the fandom, too bad Hasbro's toy distribution sucks, otherwise i would've gotten two figures of him. BTW fucking Has/Tak needs to do a Fulcrum figure, the true, best character of IDW's comics.
@@basedpota I like to think that in the old IDW continuity a stable time loop is the reason for Cybertron's and the transformers existence, and it's all because of Shockwave. Shockwave creates the 13 ores, one of which affects time. Thus creating a stable time loop in which said ore causes Cybertron to become cybertron and creating the first transfomers, eventually leading to the creation of shockwave, who then proceeds to create the 13 ores, one of which affects time....
Creation myths don’t need to be finalised, even for robots. That said, I’m still up for Simon Furman’s basic idea of manifest creation vs entropy. It’s properly mythological, not provable and all a matter of belief - and a very comic book style way of tackling the issue.
I think the multiversal singularity idea could still work; like, establish that the different versions of Primus and Unicron are still linked to each other, but come in all different forms and are associated with Cybertron’s history in one way or another.
I wish people would remember that Primus was kind of a dick when he was first introduced. In issue #74 of the US Marvel Transformers comic Optimus Prime repeatedly gets mad at Primus for his callous and manipulative attitude towards his creations. I dunno, it just seems like an interesting dynamic to me.
As Usual, great VIdeo! My Favorite back Story for Primus is the Unicron Trilogy one! He and Unicron are Opposite brothers, a superior being which decided to start life in Space... after charting the whole universe. I still think Primus being the Core of Cybertron should always be the canonical Story for him. I rather the Epic story or 2 primordial beings charting, creating, and destroying (Unicron), the Universe.

The basics on Primus: Primus is an American funk metal band formed in El Sobrante, California in 1984. The band is currently composed of bassist/vocalist Les Claypool, guitarist Larry "Ler" LaLonde, and drummer Tim "Herb" Alexander. Primus originally formed in 1984 with Claypool and guitarist Todd Huth, later joined by drummer Jay Lane, though the latter two departed the band at the end of 1988. Featuring LaLonde and Alexander, Primus recorded the live album Suck on This in 1989, followed by four studio albums: Frizzle Fry (1990), Sailing the Seas of Cheese (1991), Pork Soda (1993), and Tales from the Punchbowl (1995). Alexander left the band in 1996 due to lack of interest [1] and was replaced by Bryan "Brain" Mantia, with whom Primus went on to record the original theme song for the TV show South Park and two more albums, Brown Album (1997) and Antipop (1999), before entering into a hiatus in 2000.
Simon Furmans origin of transformers blew my mind when I first got into transformers comics and cartoons. I believe it allows for transformers to be taken more seriously and showing a spiritual side to the franchise. Making them more human and relatable. However, when reading phase two of IDW and Rung was introduced therefore tossing away the origin o was highly disappointed. Sure, it's a different universe but just seems phase two was trying to do away with a ton of elements that made transformers special.
At last, the basics on Primus! That last part about him being an ordinary Transformer was a surprise to me, and also sort of reminded me of what happened to the Great Spirit Mata Nui in the ninth year of the Bionicle story. Also, I am considering supporting the channel on Patreon, but I need to work out my finances before I make any attempts. I apologize if it looks like I’m spamming, I was writing this comment before and I think I posted it before I could finish it.
Not going to lie. I'd like if they merged the Rung concept with the conduit idea. Primus is still this powerful God of creation and order, but he masquerades as the psychiatrist Rung to walk amongst his own creations without having too much leeway to interfere in their lives. Sort of like the Gods of Greek myth.
I think my favorite is where Primus and Unicron are emissaries of The One, before Unicron turns evil. The Thirteen is one of my favorite concepts from the franchise. But I also like Rung as a character, and when you really look at it he probably is more than "just" another Transformer. He just... appeared one day. Then he used his power to create the rest of Cybertron's populace, possibly even the Guiding Hand. And his spark became a hotspot (no, not Hot Spot) after his sacrifice. There is definitely something to all that, but has thankful been left as a mystery to unravel. Stories are usually better when they don't explain everything.
Yes, I tend to think the same way! If we DID still have to worry about "singularities," there's still ample room within the IDW universe for the "true" Primus to exist (after all, Cybertron, Vector Sigma, sparks, and Rung's power to make a cyrstal that could tap that life-giving power all exist in it without given origins!) and for Rung to just be another embodiment of his invisible hand.
I think my favorite Primus moment is his transformation to robot mode in Transformers Cybertron, especially with Vector Prime introducing him in as grand a manner as possible.
The Multiversal Singularity origin is easily my favorite origin. I wish that the Shroud did not affect every universe, just most of them. This was one of the best episodes yet. As a side note, have you ever considered doing an Advanced series?
I love the idea of Primus being the one who created the Transformers, whereas the Quintessons would be the ones who manipulate the Transformers race into believing that they were their slaves!
I liked the original comic story of them being 2 cosmic warriors who were confined to planets an made the planets into new bodies...pretty cool; also making primus a constant in every universe is cool too!
So if Cybertron was organic in the past does that mean Primus' original warriors against Unicron were going to be organic as well? Like the Thirteen (or a version of them) weren't Primus' first children, examples being the Covenant shown in 3H comics and the Demons in the Marvel comics.
Does anyone find it interesting that through out the years Primus has shown a darker side? Like there's abandoning his earliest children like the Covenant & Demons (and possibly the organic life that once lived on Cybertron), creating his main children through the multiverse to fight & murder each other in a supposed effort to get rid of his brother & being nothing more than weapons, and despite RG1 being shit; it was sorta interesting that it said that Primus used the multiverse as a testing ground to supposedly create one perfect world and what that implies. Anyway I prefer the multiversal Primus origin with elements from BM & IDW.
Where did you get the idea that he actually purposely created the transformer race to fight and murder each other? He creates them to have free will and of course a race of beings with free will aren't going to always get along with each other.
I really like the idea of a planet-sized robot god that embodies the power of life, but I also like the "what if God was one of us" type approach with Rung.
*G1 Marvel Primus:* I trapped myself in a rock. *Unicron Trilogy Primus:* I had three dedicated series chronicling my eternal struggle with my brother. *Aligned Primus:* I was technically retired. *Rung:* I... I have a PHD in psychiatry... *Other Primuses:* ... *Aligned Primus:* I knew I should've taken up a hobby...
If i'm making my own Transformers re-boot i'm going to need as much knowledge as posible about its characters and mythology in order to not get slapped in the face by Beast Wars Megatron.
Im thinking rung could be an external construct of Primus’s consciousness, wandering the surface to watch over his creations and witnessing the events that change the face of Cybertron itself
I have a kind of head canon where the Quintessons built TWO factory planets. One produced industrial robots, the other military robots. After turning on the Quintessons, the military planet turned on the industrial planet and started a campaign to literally consume the resources of other planets to fuel its military production. Kind of my own little harmonization of the two main origin stories, and I admit that I actually prefer a more pedestrian origin to a cosmic one. A toyline of transforming robots never really warranted a Biblical origin story to me, with dueling gods and thirteen disciples and all of that.
Oh, wow, I had no idea Rung was Primus. Man, I REALLY need to catch up with those IDW comics someday. ^^; Oh well, you learn something new every day. :)
I feel like the Primus origin = creationism, and the Quintesson origin = evolution. One is idealistic, it involves higher powers and higher purpose. The other is the brutal reality, forms made for specific functions, there are creators but they are indifferent and flawed.
Ok that last bit of the video really suprised me as I am not upto that point yet in the collections, I can't wait to see how everyone handles it on the ship.
I personally like to combine the G1 cartoon and comic origins. Maybe sometime after Primus went dormant, the Quintessons enslaved the Cybertronians for their own gain.
I always prefer the idea of Primus as a benevolent godlike entity that opposed Unicron and created the 13 Primes to help in this task. With the idea that the Primes are the penultimates of their race and any Primes after them being ordinary cybertronians who have proven worthy by their own virtue and accend to Prime with The Matrix.
My favorite origin story is the one from the Aligned continuity. In the guide book Covenant of Primus, they explain that before the beginning of the Universe, there was the One being and he was the only thing that existed. He looked around and wondered what he would do with all that empty space. Part of him thought that it was all his and he should keep it for himself. Another part believed that he should use this space to create things. The internal conflict pushed the One to split into two beings, Unicron the unique and Primus the first. The seperation also released a colossal wave of Energy known as the Big bang.
I think you're misremembering slightly! The Covenant explains that there was a singular entity that explored the living universe (we're talking after the Big Bang already here) and eventually found other lifeforms. It was the realisation that other beings existed while it was singular and unique that caused the internal conflic that resulted in its subdividing into Primus and Unicron, into "good" and "evil." It's not functionally hugely different from "The One Origin," which also described Unicron and Primus as being created by The One as a singular being that was subdivided.
I’m a fan fiction writer, and I’m writing my own version of the Transformers origin, which borrows from all versions. The history that’s told on Modern Cybertron is what we all expect. Primus and Unicron fought, Primus trapped them inside the asteroids, the asteroids reshaped themselves into metal planets, Primus created the thirteen Primes, etc. But then an invasion force would attack Cybertron and would challenge that history. The invading force is the quintessons, who were referenced a few times in Transformers legends, with some theorizing that they were one of many creations of Quintus Prime. And upon capturing one and studying it, they realize that their technology, while visually different, is actually the exact same technology as Cybertron, fueled by Energon, capable of transformation, etc. But then the Quintesson wakes up, and agrees to explain everything. He says that they are invading Cybertron as they want to reclaim it. After all, they did create it. Optimus naturally doubts his claim, as they were created by Primus, and the Quintesson replies. “Yes, you were. I’m not denying that. We did read your history coming in, and much of it rings true, but many things have been altered over time. Like Quintus Prime creating us. That’s not true. We created him. All he did was advance us from organic beings into the glorious robotic race we are now. But back on the topic at hand.” “The early parts of your history are completely accurate. Primus did fight Unicron, they were trapped in asteroids, and Primus did create the thirteen Primes. But that’s where your history deviates. If it stayed true, then you’d know that that’s where we came in. When we first found your planet, it was it was nothing but an asteroid with a massive energy sphere in the centre and thirteen smaller ones surrounding it. We were running out of fuel and desperately needed a new power source, so we integrated these energy spheres into our machines and found that they gave us unlimited clean energy. Only afterwards did we realize that the energy spheres were sentient and alive. So we gave them robotic bodies, and with their help, we started building factories on the asteroid until it evolved into what we now call Cybertron. The large energy sphere didn’t have a name, so our emperor, Primacron decided to name it Primus, after the first half of his name. And by merging Primus’s essence with our Vector Sigma computer, not only did it become sentient, but it became capable of giving life, specifically through another artifact of its own creation, the artifact you know as the Allspark. From there, your race began to grow, and our technology began to flourish. But then you turned on us. You called us slavers and banished us from Cybertron. From there, Primacron vowed revenge. And from there, we found another asteroid. And upon communicating with the entity inside, he realized that he was an enemy of Primus. Seizing the opportunity for revenge, Primacron converted the asteroid into a weapon capable of deconstructing planets and named it Unicron, after the second half of his name. But then we were betrayed again, as Unicron turned on us, forcing us to flee back to our home planet. But now we are back, and we are ready to reclaim what is rightfully ours.” Wow that was long. Got carried away with my creativity there.
In your writing, how did pre asteroid Primus fight Unicron if it took Vector Sigma to grant Primus Sentience? Also I think the word you want is cognizance as sentience is the capacity to perceive and react to stimuli, and cognizance is the capacity to think.
Primus as a multidimensional Singularity and the Creator of the Cybertronian Race PLUS being Cybertron itself is the BEST story and interpretation of the Character.
Thank you Chris, my sons and I love watching your channel! They are very interested in Clobber, and the fact that he went from Decepticon to Autobot. I’d be kind of interested in a “Basics on Transformer Allegiance” that explores the characters in Transformers history that have flipped sides. Thanks so much! Keep up the great work!
I really wouldn't mind if they revealed a twist that Primus isn't the god of the Cybertronians, he's the god of the Quintessons. He created/evolved them, they gained intelligence, became post-Quintessonian (that's why they're a bunch of giant floating heads) and built the transformers befor the transformers rose up against them Terminator style and built their own society. Eventually the Quintessons built a metal body for Unicron C'tan style so Primus kind of abandoned them and chose the Transformers or something, that could be a myth.
4:09,holy crap! I didn't know they said his name in that cartoon. 0_- I always thought they recognized the G1 cartoon but looks like its retconned. 8:20,guess the Quintessons are always destined to think they deserve credit for making the Transformers and were self-righteous in those deeds. 8:30,so that's where Cyberverse used this idea,eh? 0_- 10:05,ah dammit. 12:11,he and McAddam should get along fine.
Was definitely shocked about Rung's true identity along with the other 4. And it became one of favorite ideas because of how different it was compared to the other origin stories. Overall I loved IDW comics, has by far been one of my favorite incarnation of Transformers in general.
Fantastic! Great Stuff as always. I may prefer the Quintesson (and this Rung) origin more than the power creep that plagues G*d vs the Devil story lines, but they’re still interesting, the way you put them. Stay safe out there! We’re always looking forward to more, The Basics.
I always preferred the more mythic g1 comic version. Particularly the subtle differences between primus's version of events and unicrons. The prob with God characters is the more ya use em the less epic they seem. Galactus is a classic example of this (and the 1st one's in babylon 5). To be done right ya really can barely use em at all :)
In my mind, the Quintessons are the true creators of the Transformers, and Primus is simply part of their religion

An episode on "Naming Conventions" could be interesting, talking about name origins of classic characters both in-story and by the writers. And why might so many transformers have names that sound more like nicknames related to their alt-mode rather than being uniquely alien. E.g. "Optimus", "Grimlock", and "Arcee" sound almost alien, while "Bumblebee", "Prowl", and "Ratchet" are clearly nicknames or codenames. Like, how many "-trons" are there? How many "-bots" are there? Also you could talk about how some names evolve or have to be changed for copyright or censorship like the dinobot Slag being renamed Slug. In-story, some characters seem to name themselves when they are born or take on a new alt-mode or get an upgrade, while many characters are named on the spot by other transformers or humans, such as Bumblebee in his movie.
Primus becoming a psychiatrist is such a dad thing for him to do. He still watches over his "kids". Even if they never get his name right.
I imagine Comp!Primus would be an effective psychiatrist for cosmic beings like Galactus.

So agreed with the multiversal thingy.
But if Primus is a multiversal singularity, doesn't that mean he's creating an army of trillions of powerful robots across the multiverse? Seems a little suspicious to me...

"For all their supposed omnipotence... even gods can be conned!"
I wish people would remember that Primus was kind of a dick when he was first introduced. The basics on Primus:
Primus is an American funk metal band formed in El Sobrante, California in 1984.

Anyhow, great video Chris, thoroughly enjoyed it.
First time I had heard about Rung and I admit, I liked the new adaption they did with Primus there (I'm used to the aligned continity)!
Same
Nope he is primus

I think they more-or-less said that in the JP & 3H universe.
Go check Rodimus Primal's video on the subject
I love that grin Primus has at 7:05. It reminds me of Heavy Weapons Guy.
But back on the topic at hand.”
“The early parts of your history are completely accurate.
But now we are back, and we are ready to reclaim what is rightfully ours.”
Wow that was long. Got carried away with my creativity there.
That sounds really interesting. Could you provide a link to your fanfic

6:43 I still have that exact Primus toy at my house. It’s been sitting in the same spot in “planet-mode” for 14 years.
You're so close to 100k! I wish you the best and congrats if it happens before the next video
