In my almost 44 years on earth , no scene in a movie brings me goose bumps like the scene when he transforms to Rodimus Prime in the belly of Unicron … and I have used that phrase “light our darkest hour” many times since I first ever watched this
Same with me. My mom took me to see that movie in the theaters when it first came out. I obviously own the movie and to this day at age 47 that seen still gives me chills.
Megatron was just being Megatron, Optimus knew he was being deceitful...you do not fight someone for millions of years and not get to know them. Hot Rod ment well, but screwed up the dynamics of the fight by interfering. He is directly responsible for Optimus' death. I LIKED Hot Rod overall, minus his interference. I thought Rodimus Prime was just silly...Space Winnebago.

Rodimus Prime is probably the most polarizing character in transformers history. Either you hate him because you blame him for Optimus getting killed or you like him for being the most human leader of all the transformers.

As a kid i accepted Optimus Primes death it was a hard pill to swallow but I liked Hotrod enough to give him a chance especially when he Fought Galvatron in hand-to-hand combat.
It's because we blamed him for getting Optimus killed and then he got to inherit the matrix. I was 5 or 6 when the original movie came out, so I agree with you.

Agreed. I like Optimus, but I love Rodimus character. Optimus was a bit too traditional, predictable, and boring for me. How Hot Rod became Rodimus was special to me as a kid, it was almost Arthur unlikeliness of pulling Excalibur from stone type of moment. Too bad the writers didn’t know what to make of Rodimus after the movie.

This is the third time he was explored for the origins video, since Chris McFeely already did the Basics video on Hot Rod and RodimusPrimal had also done a Retrospective video on Hot Rod/Rodimus Prime in tribute to Dick Gautier's passing.

Yeah... I was in the theatre as a kid when the 86 movie was new... was traumatized when I saw Hot Rod interfere between Optimus and Megatron, Optimus getting gunned down thanks to that little idiot. Thanks Hasbro!
But honestly Optimus is at fault too if you look through it, he was even told by Kup to finish Megatron off, but he preferred to talk and give Megatron alot of time to grab the pistol. Even if Hotrod interrupted or not, Megatron will still grab the blaster because of Prime's monologue😭
You missed his appearance in Transformers Animated, where he was guarding one of the Autobot space bridge units during a Decepticon attack, which was the first time we saw him use his energy bow in animation (as far as I am aware).
They not mentioned anything about Rodimus during the Takara Headmasters anime series, but then a lot of the images they use for toys don't match up to what they are saying, example, they talk about the G1 toy and instead are showing the MP figure.

And there were plans for a third and fourth season but those were tossed out with the corporate shift that happened during the second season's production.
@@dracone4370 Animated did have a Season 3, that is when Sari changed from her child appearance to the more Teenage one, plus the third season had promising episodes that would of lead to something down the road like "Predacons Rising" Where Blackarachnia turned Wasp into Waspinator. as you pointed out yes they were working on a Season 4 but that got canned due to Hasbro wanting to move their properties to the Hub and thus started Transformers Prime. NOW if you ask me while Both shows are great I still think they should of at least given us the fourth season of Animated before moving to Prime.
I didn't grow up with rodimus but when I saw him in g1 from my family members rhino dvd I had no idea who he was then I heard of the movie never believed it until I saw Optimus die on death bed. Later I saw the whole movie didn't say anything out of all I didn't blame anyone but megatron for the death. After seeing him struggle leadership I saw bionicle 3 then 1 and 2 there vakama reminded me of rodimus unexperienced and young leader and that's how I know hot rod to rodimus prime

Rodimus Primes was the best leader of the Autobots because he was the most human of all, a true leader that know the burden of leadership, the consequences of actions and the importance of life, but his most important quality was his will to prevail, not because of vanity or pride, but for the sake of all the innocents
Great video. Nice to see someone treat Rodimus Prime with respect. Rodimus Prime has been my favourite Autobot since 1986. I never liked Optimus. Even as a child I was glad to see Prime die. Just wish Bumblebee, Kup and Wreck-Gar died in the movie too. Optimus Prime might have been leader for millions of years but he spent 4 million of them deactivated.
While I loved the movie as a kid, in general I feel the character works best as Hot Rod as his ascent to Rodimus felt a little rushed. But would be interested if one day we get a story where he still inadvertently gets prime killed. Then maybe Ultra Magnus or someone wlse else takes over for a longer period of time, allowing him to mature more. Finally, after maturing and overcoming his guilt from the death of Optimus, Hot Rod rises to become a wise CONFIDENT leader, following in the foosteps of his hero and predecessor. Kind of like Simba in the Lion King. Also I think his Energin Ultimate modenworks better for him rhan hus G1 camper. But that's just me.
Actually, in my opinion, Ultra Magnus should've been the one to be able to "redeem" himself by getting back the Matrix and then being able to unlock it to become the new Prime leader of the autobots. (After all, his G1 toy cab originally transformed into a white version of Optimus Prime before adding the trailer to form his "armor" that gave him his classic look as Ultra Magus.) Maybe in the movie, he would've been transformed into a white Optimus Prime who would've been given a new name to create a separate identity by calling himself Ultimus Prime. What do you think? Would he be a better leader (& perhaps a more popular than Rodimus Prime?)
@@RppRussell Possibly, at least at the time. But I agree, for the movie he would definitely work better as the next prime. With the movie's time constraints this redemption to a leader works better for ultra. While I enjoy Hot rod's redemption too, it didn't necessarily feel like he was redeeming himself as a leader, just as a person and warrior in general. While I still, love the idea of him growing to become a leader, the movie wasn't fit for that story. I think it should be ultra magnus after optimus, then hot rod, then i don't maybe one day bumblebee gets a shot as Gold Bug or something lol.
Great content man. Only feedback, just talk naturally like we were in your living room. That unnatural yet formulaic cadence and tone a lot of new UA-camrs use is distracting and slightly jarring and does a disservice to the fantastic stuff you’ve got here on Rodimus.
Radimus needs a reformat but im thinking into a RAM style big remixed style truck. Thats what i would like to see to fit todays styles of big trucks versus what they originally did with the old school van 😅 or another Optimus 😊
Yes he showed up outta no where but they explain at the beginning of the animated movie it's the year 2005 and years after spike was older and took over chosen by the matrix in the worst of times. So he had a lot of shoes to fill but learned along the way.
Hot Rod was excellent in the Transformers movie but Rodimus Prime was lacking on the TV series. The movie was awesome!! I seen it in theaters as a kid with my friends
G1 Hot Rod looks like he's simply a modified Lancia Stratos Zero Concept car which I believe would make him the second Lancia vehicle in Transformers apart form Wheeljack.
They spent so little time fleshing him out it was hard to care about him. The show had more focus on Ultra Magus than any other leader from the Autobots.
My childhood is coming back to hunt me 😅. Love it and for those who love the Transformers. I know a game that let you have Transformers Commender for WW2 Ships and ear their original voice. 😅
Hot rod gi tech specs was actually higher then Rodimus prime, sd, firepower, went to hot rod, intelligence was equal and rank gave the nod to Rodimus, even though Megatron was technically slightly weaker in firepower and strength then Galverton but was smarter, and was better in battles and making tactical decisions so was a better warrior and leader then Galverton , Optimus vs Orion let's compare Optimus and sideswipe or red alert also. If unicorn would've given Galverton Cyclonus strategic prowess Galverton would be superior to Megatron, and Rodimus actually lost tactical specs when he was reformatted to Rodimus.
I gotta say as much as I love Optimus and despise Hot rod/Rodimus. I can’t help but feel bad for the guy and that they did him dirty. He went from leader to trainee again and then only third in command to a sub group of autobots.

When I first watched the original movie, I literally hated his character, because of him letting Optimus die. But overtime, I did find myself start to forgive him during his appearances in the G1 cartoon.
I never liked Optimus because he was too rigid. Think about that for a moment, how many times did Optimus let Megatron live? Its this type of thinking that has been his biggest weakness. I liked Rodimus because he was cool and suave at first. He then became leader and he had alot of self doubt. But that is ok, you have to take alot of variables into consideration when you are leader. Optimus made mistakes but he was just too stubborn.

You show Hot Shot from Armada and on screen is the yellow version, and then you mention a Hot Rod color version (and never showed that), then you mentioned Excellion from Transformers Cybertron and show Hot Rod from Transformers: The Last Knight (a Hot Rod in name only). You didn’t show the Rodimus toy from Transformers Energon and while you were describing the G1 versions of Hot Rod you were showing the studio series & Kingdom versions of Hot Rod and Rodimus. Your character history was good but your toy history need some serious changes.
i grew up loving transformers and loved the 1986 movie, which i think is the official main TF movie. I couldnt stand the prime wars cartoon. I hope they make more of the War for Cybertron series on Netflix, and hope that he Hot Rod would make an appearance along with combiners.
The classified top secret shameful origin of Hot Rod: Hot rod got in the way, while megatron was on his knees looking for a gun with Optimus pointing the gun straight at him. Optimus would've had plenty of time to pull the trigger after he saw Megatron on his knees with the gun. Hot rod saw a whimpering megatron on the ground trying to grab a small gun. Hot rod was confident to pounce while he saw megatron in a begging unthreatening looking position, being stomped so to speak by Prime. Megatron bucked back up and grabbed Hot Rod and used him as a hostage slash shield. Optimus didn't want to shoot Hot rod that's why he said out of the way Hot rod, which means Hot rod should've stayed back like every other autobots under Optimus Primes leadership has done. Let's stop trying to pull a rabbit out of thin air. Hot Rod should've stayed back like kup told him to. They should've introduced the character in a more logicly respectful way instead of an overconfident, ego, look at what I can do , smelling hisself or flexing , attention seeking undisciplined teen boybot.
Ok if we are going to be honest let's be also honest about Optimus Prime. Optimus was never the best shot in the universe there is plenty of evidence of him missing his shots in seasons 1 and 2 so there is no guarantee he would have hit Megatron before being shot himself. Also let's be honest about Optimus' character. He would never have made the kill shot and most likely would have just shot the gun from Megatron's hand. On top of this because of who he is he would have let Megatron walk away despite how many Autobots he personally killed because that's who Optimus is. So while you might blame Hot Rod for his death Optimus himself deserves more blame because of his inability to live up to the terms he himself set for the fight. "One shall stand one shall fall" if Optimus lived up to the terms he set for the fight he would have shot Megatron as soon as he lifted his rifle. So yes Optimus is more responsible for his own death than anyone

Did you just suggest that he wouldn't have hit megatron? So my question to you is why was it safe for him to try and shoot megatron with hot rod as megatrons hostage? What if he hit hot rod?. 2ndly optimus wasn't glued to the ground he could've jumped out the way if hot rod hadn't got caught and was held hostage by megatron. 3rd it took more than two shots to kill optimus primes tough hide. In that time he could have lept away and not tried to rescue hot rod; however, hot rods self inflicted situation in the cartoon, likely caused optimus to not dodge the shots or bomb rush megatron because he was distracted on trying to figure out how to not leave hot rod in megatrons hands in a hostage grip. He was so eager to put megatron out that he got dazed for a minute on thinking and likely could've said hold on, i have to be careful not to shoot hot rod but he forgot that megatron was desperate to win by any means, and so megs took advantage of primes distracted inner argument so to speak. Optimus did one time, what computron did whenever he fought in the series. Computron over thinks while in the middle of a battle or warzone. Optimus over thought the situation thus distracting hisself from what megatrons fingers and hands were doing with the gun.

At the end of their physical encounter Optimus launched Megatron to the ground and went to pick up his rifle once he picked it up he pointed at Megatron and it's at this point Optimus became responsible for the upcoming situation. If he stood up for the ground rules he himself set for the fight he would have taken the shot or multiple shots right then and there and killed Megatron but he didn't became of who he is. Even though Megatron was personally responsible for the deaths of several Autobots Optimus didn't shoot him because his intention was to allow Megatron to retreat. Secondly what makes Optimus responsible is he is well aware of who Megatron is and should have known better when Megatron started begging for mercy and crawling towards him. Because of all this Optimus created the situation that caused Megatron to shoot and kill him. Hot Rod wouldn't have needed to try to involve himself in trying to save his hero when he saw Megatron reaching for the gun. Optimus ' many errors with the fight before Hot Rod's involvement are the main reasons he ended up dead so yes Optimus has more responsibility for his own death than Hot Rod.

He normally tackles Megatron but instead he went to go pick up his gun because he had thoughts about ending Megatrons life instead of beating him into stasis like he normally would come close to doing in the series. It took him a little time to come to those terms. He saw megatron reach for that pea shooter and hot rod immediately jumped on megatron right after he grabbed it and started moving it towards Optimus' s position. So Optimus in the movie couldn't shoot because hot rod got in the way. Are we looking at the same Transformers movie here? What fight are you looking at?. Name one thing in what I just described that didn't happen in that scene or something I left out.?. What lie did I tell about that part of the movie? I don't see what you said happened. Megatron dosent follows prime command. What do you mean prime layed the ground rules for that fight? Primes Rules for that fight were not two ( Hot Rod and prime) shall stand and one shall fall. Transformers Animated was getting so good by the time it got canceled, it started out goofy but damn it was cool . Sucks it ended so early .

NOW if you ask me while Both shows are great I still think they should of at least given us the fourth season of Animated before moving to Prime.

I didn't grow up with rodimus but when I saw him in g1 from my family members rhino dvd I had no idea who he was then I heard of the movie never believed it until I saw Optimus die on death bed. Later I saw the whole movie didn't say anything out of all I didn't blame anyone but megatron for the death. After seeing him struggle leadership I saw bionicle 3 then 1 and 2 there vakama reminded me of rodimus unexperienced and young leader and that's how I know hot rod to rodimus prime

Rodimus Prime has been my favourite Autobot since 1986. I never liked Optimus. Even as a child I was glad to see Prime die. Just wish Bumblebee, Kup and Wreck-Gar died in the movie too.
Optimus Prime might have been leader for millions of years but he spent 4 million of them deactivated.

I love Rodimus Cron's transformation into Machoman Randy Savage Cron.
While I loved the movie as a kid, in general I feel the character works best as Hot Rod as his ascent to Rodimus felt a little rushed. But would be interested if one day we get a story where he still inadvertently gets prime killed. Then maybe Ultra Magnus or someone wlse else takes over for a longer period of time, allowing him to mature more. Finally, after maturing and overcoming his guilt from the death of Optimus, Hot Rod rises to become a wise CONFIDENT leader, following in the foosteps of his hero and predecessor. Kind of like Simba in the Lion King. Also I think his Energin Ultimate modenworks better for him rhan hus G1 camper. But that's just me.
Actually, in my opinion, Ultra Magnus should've been the one to be able to "redeem" himself by getting back the Matrix and then being able to unlock it to become the new Prime leader of the autobots. (After all, his G1 toy cab originally transformed into a white version of Optimus Prime before adding the trailer to form his "armor" that gave him his classic look as Ultra Magus.) Maybe in the movie, he would've been transformed into a white Optimus Prime who would've been given a new name to create a separate identity by calling himself Ultimus Prime. What do you think? Would he be a better leader (& perhaps a more popular than Rodimus Prime?)
@@RppRussell Possibly, at least at the time. But I agree, for the movie he would definitely work better as the next prime. With the movie's time constraints this redemption to a leader works better for ultra. While I enjoy Hot rod's redemption too, it didn't necessarily feel like he was redeeming himself as a leader, just as a person and warrior in general. While I still, love the idea of him growing to become a leader, the movie wasn't fit for that story. I think it should be ultra magnus after optimus, then hot rod, then i don't maybe one day bumblebee gets a shot as Gold Bug or something lol.

That unnatural yet formulaic cadence and tone a lot of new UA-camrs use is distracting and slightly jarring and does a disservice to the fantastic stuff you’ve got here on Rodimus.
Radimus needs a reformat but im thinking into a RAM style big remixed style truck. Thats what i would like to see to fit todays styles of big trucks versus what they originally did with the old school van 😅 or another Optimus 😊

Hot Rod was excellent in the Transformers movie but Rodimus Prime was lacking on the TV series. The movie was awesome!! I seen it in theaters as a kid with my friends

G1 Hot Rod looks like he's simply a modified Lancia Stratos Zero Concept car which I believe would make him the second Lancia vehicle in Transformers apart form Wheeljack.
They spent so little time fleshing him out it was hard to care about him. The show had more focus on Ultra Magus than any other leader from the Autobots.

Hot rod gi tech specs was actually higher then Rodimus prime, sd, firepower, went to hot rod, intelligence was equal and rank gave the nod to Rodimus, even though Megatron was technically slightly weaker in firepower and strength then Galverton but was smarter, and was better in battles and making tactical decisions so was a better warrior and leader then Galverton , Optimus vs Orion let's compare Optimus and sideswipe or red alert also. If unicorn would've given Galverton Cyclonus strategic prowess Galverton would be superior to Megatron, and Rodimus actually lost tactical specs when he was reformatted to Rodimus.
And not one of them looks like the one in the thumbnail. I want THAT ONE, and I want it to transform. Signed-Richard.

I REALLY HATE HOW THE AUTOBOTS ALWAYS DIED. THEY RARELY KILLED THE DECEPTICONS OFF.
When I first watched the original movie, I literally hated his character, because of him letting Optimus die. But overtime, I did find myself start to forgive him during his appearances in the G1 cartoon.

I haven't read Transformers since I was a kid. So is Rodimus the full time leader now? Is Optimus no longer around?
I never liked Optimus because he was too rigid. Think about that for a moment, how many times did Optimus let Megatron live? Its this type of thinking that has been his biggest weakness. I liked Rodimus because he was cool and suave at first. He then became leader and he had alot of self doubt. But that is ok, you have to take alot of variables into consideration when you are leader. Optimus made mistakes but he was just too stubborn.

I’m confused. You show Hot Shot from Armada and on screen is the yellow version, and then you mention a Hot Rod color version (and never showed that), then you mentioned Excellion from Transformers Cybertron and show Hot Rod from Transformers: The Last Knight (a Hot Rod in name only). You didn’t show the Rodimus toy from Transformers Energon and while you were describing the G1 versions of Hot Rod you were showing the studio series & Kingdom versions of Hot Rod and Rodimus.

i grew up loving transformers and loved the 1986 movie, which i think is the official main TF movie. I couldnt stand the prime wars cartoon. I hope they make more of the War for Cybertron series on Netflix, and hope that he Hot Rod would make an appearance along with combiners.
He was a season 3 flop that hurt the series so bad they had to bring Optimus Prime back from the dead to. Save the show
The classified top secret shameful origin of Hot Rod: Hot rod got in the way, while megatron was on his knees looking for a gun with Optimus pointing the gun straight at him. Optimus would've had plenty of time to pull the trigger after he saw Megatron on his knees with the gun. Hot rod saw a whimpering megatron on the ground trying to grab a small gun. Hot rod was confident to pounce while he saw megatron in a begging unthreatening looking position, being stomped so to speak by Prime. Megatron bucked back up and grabbed Hot Rod and used him as a hostage slash shield. Optimus didn't want to shoot Hot rod that's why he said out of the way Hot rod, which means Hot rod should've stayed back like every other autobots under Optimus Primes leadership has done. Let's stop trying to pull a rabbit out of thin air. Hot Rod should've stayed back like kup told him to. They should've introduced the character in a more logicly respectful way instead of an overconfident, ego, look at what I can do , smelling hisself or flexing , attention seeking undisciplined teen boybot.
Ok if we are going to be honest let's be also honest about Optimus Prime. Optimus was never the best shot in the universe there is plenty of evidence of him missing his shots in seasons 1 and 2 so there is no guarantee he would have hit Megatron before being shot himself. Also let's be honest about Optimus' character. He would never have made the kill shot and most likely would have just shot the gun from Megatron's hand. On top of this because of who he is he would have let Megatron walk away despite how many Autobots he personally killed because that's who Optimus is. So while you might blame Hot Rod for his death Optimus himself deserves more blame because of his inability to live up to the terms he himself set for the fight. "One shall stand one shall fall" if Optimus lived up to the terms he set for the fight he would have shot Megatron as soon as he lifted his rifle. So yes Optimus is more responsible for his own death than anyone
@@krizladso who was the best shot? Megatron admitted in the cartoon, that he himself never misses at close point blank range. So there is a reason prime didn't shoot ?. Did you just suggest that he wouldn't have hit megatron? So my question to you is why was it safe for him to try and shoot megatron with hot rod as megatrons hostage? What if he hit hot rod?. 2ndly optimus wasn't glued to the ground he could've jumped out the way if hot rod hadn't got caught and was held hostage by megatron. 3rd it took more than two shots to kill optimus primes tough hide. In that time he could have lept away and not tried to rescue hot rod; however, hot rods self inflicted situation in the cartoon, likely caused optimus to not dodge the shots or bomb rush megatron because he was distracted on trying to figure out how to not leave hot rod in megatrons hands in a hostage grip. He was so eager to put megatron out that he got dazed for a minute on thinking and likely could've said hold on, i have to be careful not to shoot hot rod but he forgot that megatron was desperate to win by any means, and so megs took advantage of primes distracted inner argument so to speak. Optimus did one time, what computron did whenever he fought in the series. Computron over thinks while in the middle of a battle or warzone. Optimus over thought the situation thus distracting hisself from what megatrons fingers and hands were doing with the gun.

Megatron and Hot Rod were acting on their own order. Prime was not mind controlling their bodies to cause things to happen for prime to get shot. Prime and kup didn't tell hot rod to help him stop Megatron. Hot Rod told hot rod to help prime stop megatron.
@@chiliesauce8381 you are completely missing the point that I am making thus why Optimus was responsible for his own death more than Hot Rod. As I've said Optimus set the ground rules for the fight. At the end of their physical encounter Optimus launched Megatron to the ground and went to pick up his rifle once he picked it up he pointed at Megatron and it's at this point Optimus became responsible for the upcoming situation. If he stood up for the ground rules he himself set for the fight he would have taken the shot or multiple shots right then and there and killed Megatron but he didn't became of who he is.
Even though Megatron was personally responsible for the deaths of several Autobots Optimus didn't shoot him because his intention was to allow Megatron to retreat. Secondly what makes Optimus responsible is he is well aware of who Megatron is and should have known better when Megatron started begging for mercy and crawling towards him. Because of all this Optimus created the situation that caused Megatron to shoot and kill him. Hot Rod wouldn't have needed to try to involve himself in trying to save his hero when he saw Megatron reaching for the gun. Optimus ' many errors with the fight before Hot Rod's involvement are the main reasons he ended up dead so yes Optimus has more responsibility for his own death than Hot Rod.
@@krizlad I'm not missing any point. Optimus character in the franchise isn't written to kill. Had hot rod not jumped in the way Optimus would have shot Megatron or jumped out the way. He normally tackles Megatron but instead he went to go pick up his gun because he had thoughts about ending Megatrons life instead of beating him into stasis like he normally would come close to doing in the series. It took him a little time to come to those terms. He saw megatron reach for that pea shooter and hot rod immediately jumped on megatron right after he grabbed it and started moving it towards Optimus' s position. So Optimus in the movie couldn't shoot because hot rod got in the way. Are we looking at the same Transformers movie here? What fight are you looking at?. Name one thing in what I just described that didn't happen in that scene or something I left out.?. What lie did I tell about that part of the movie? I don't see what you said happened. Megatron dosent follows prime command. What do you mean prime layed the ground rules for that fight? Primes Rules for that fight were not two ( Hot Rod and prime) shall stand and one shall fall. Both megatron and hot rod disobeyed Primes ground rules, even when kup reminded hot rod how Primes rules go; when he told Hot Rod to stay away, that's Primes fight. That happened in the series. The autobots and deceptions sat back and watched Optimus and Megatron fight in the arena. Neither side was allowed to help their leader. Even though cheating took place on the deceptions side.
