  • It's commonly known within the Jiu-Jitsu community that the blue belt is the hardest belt to progress from.
    ... here's why!

It took me 9 MONTHS to get my 1st stripe on my WB and another 2 yrs to get my BB (yes, I'm a slow learner) at 2-3x a week and started at 40 yrs old. I do have the BB blues at times since I feel like I'm not improving at all. 🤷‍♂️ I think BB is the hardest to attain since I've seen so many people, who started around the same time as me, drop out for whatever reason. Anybody else notice this?

Blue is easy. Just keep showing up and you’ll get it beat into you. Getting to purple is gonna require some conscious effort and willingness to step out of your comfort zone.

it took me like 3 months to get stripped and then i trained for 2 more months before i kinda fell off cuz if life i think it just depends on how your coach sees your improvement

Took me 2.5yrs of training 3-4 days a week to get from white to blue. At the time it was frustrating, however I feel like I had less of the blue belt blues than if I had been promoted sooner, and less imposture syndrome as well.

I was young and in college went through white and blue really quickly.. then moved and started work... did MMA for a bit, took a 4.5 year break, came back in 2018 with a lot more wear and tear on my body... Just got my brown... For me purple was 2x as hard as white and blue combined lol

I think transition from complete beginner to blue belt is way harder than transition from a blue belt to purple belt. Its just difficult to learn all the fundamentals required to be able to be competetive at any level in jiu jitsu, once you learn that further progression is just a matter of time. Also its so easy to get discouraged, as a white belt when you get beat up every session and there are only handful of guys you can beat you feel like youre stuck and not progressing at all.I've been training for about 14 months and im still a white belt but i feel like the gap between my skills then and now is much greater than the gap between blue belts and purple belts.

I've been doing MMA for a year. I go for blue belt test on June 22. Wicked nervous. Struggling to remember the submission escapes. I believe I've got the sweeps the submissions.. the guard passes etc. Plus I also need to know the 32 Muay Thai/kickboxing moves along with the jujitsu stuff. There's alot to remember besides just the jujitsu. I also in our dojo do Muay Thai/kickboxing/jujitsu/judo/wrestling and boxing. I need to know it all for blue belt. Ugh.

@Greg Lurik yeah I'm only in martial arts for a year. Belts don't mean Jack squat in grand scheme of things. But it's nice to know I am getting better and that my hard work does pay off. Everyone in class says I'm better than I was but I don't see it.

people get to focused on the belt. i get it, its nice to have a pat on the back and something to show your improving but just work on getting better. The milestones will come. I've been training about 16 months and im in absolutely no rush for my blue belt. me and a couple of the other comp guys reguraly tap out higher belts. its just about consistancy. keep working. everything else will fall into place.

I just want to address something as a blue belt this is my third year in jujitsu going into my fourth year it took me 2 years to get my blue belt so I'll be a blue belt for a while my biggest gripe that no one tells you and it's so real because I remember being the same way when I was a white belt every white belt in the gym is gunning for you just because the color of your belt is different from theirs so they're going to try to do everything in their mind to wreck your s*** and yes I am not joking about that it is absolutely true this isn't a joke I've dealt with this many times it's up to the point now that every role I do now is full aggression and chaos because I deal with spazzy white belts at this point I'm becoming a toxic role because I don't care about these m************ and that's sad to say but it just really bothers me that the belt hierarchy really sets a tone of aggression just my point of view sounds f***** up but it's just the way I see things

I try to go 3 time a week. Sometimes it ends up being only 2. Started in Oregon. Came to Florida and went to a local school for a year. Didn’t like it. Found a much better school that I really enjoy. I’m a 8 stripe white belt. Had to start all over again. The reward for me is the knowledge though. My mind can’t get enough of it, my body on the other hand reminds me though that I’m 41. Lol
