I stumbled into this movie on Netflix many years ago without knowing I was about to watch one of the most powerful, moving, and cinematographic war movies ever made.
My late Dad was a UPI reporter in Vietnam and knew Galloway personally. As much as I loved seeing Huey's when I was a kid in the 1970's, my ARMY career went in a different direction. I ended up serving 8 years as an ARMY Engineer, heavy equipment and fuel. This was an awesome movie.
This is not my only favorite movie but my favorite Vietnam movie of all time. They put so much effort into it and I am internally grateful. May God bless those.
I was enlisted with my local Army National Guard Field Artillery Unit,1982-88. I was very fortunate to have served with several Sgts that were Vietnam Vets. They were just awesome guys and great soldiers ! They told us how war really was and trained us accordingly.
Remarkable movie, one that you can not enjoy but appreciate beyond words the effort of telling the they story of what it was like being there as much as you can in a movie. Every time I see it I notice something new and it always makes me think.
As a Red Cross (donut dolly), I was stationed with the Ist CAV in Bien Hoa. Thank you so very much for bringing back memories of those young heroes, of what they faced and had to deal with. Some told me what a firefight was like, but this movie brings the reality home. May God help our nation today, with such quality of character....Garry Owen
I was stationed at Ft. Benning GA when and where a lot of the filming was done. I remember seeing the Huey helicopters flying around being "chased" by modern helicopters with the cameras. Saw a few of the old cars used in filming too. When I watched the movie I enjoyed seeing many scenes that I recognized as Ft. Benning locations.
I grew up watching the typical Vietnam movies in the 1980s and dreamed of being a US Army Infantryman one day. I ended up accomplishing that dream in the 1990s and looked back at those movies and just felt they missed something. When We Were Soldiers came out and just knew they got it right and it was good to see a film that really paid tribute to the Vietnam War Veteran.
Well done. My BIL is a Vietnam vet and he recommended this film to me 20 odd years ago. I appreciate the insight that I got from this behind the scenes piece. Thank you.
This film touched me Very Deeply...for I was Drafted in the call up after these guys battled there all. I found my self walking that hallowed ground in less than a year with the 4th Infantry Divsion. Those guys cleared the way for us at Great cost. God Bless All of Them Always.
I don't care if you served for 3 months, 3 years or were a lifer. When you join any branch of service, the love and bond is unlike any other you will ever experience.
The best Vietnam war movie I have ever seen that brought to life what it was like for these young men sent into battle in an unconventional war. If only they had more officers like Hal Moore in charge there may have been less body bags coming home and more sons instead. That first battle he saved many of the men under his command with his steady focused mind and brilliant military tactics and the training he imparted on his men in training before going to Vietnam. There were so many unsung heroes in that war that still haven’t been given the merit and medals they truly deserved, and an apology for the abuse they received when they returned home. I have read stories of officers getting top awards just for coming up with a battle plan and actual soldiers who carried out those plans and complete the tasks get such small awards for their achievements.
I worked with a gentleman Kurtis Klock for ten years in the Dept of Corrections. He was the first 3rd helicopter in that valley, He was to 3 rounds of 5.56 and his bayonet. RIP KURTIS, I MISS YOU BROTHER @
In Ia Drang, they made the same mistake that Custer made at the Little Big Horn. They advanced without a thorough recon, split the cavalry and fought like infantry.
One of The Best Vietnam 🇻🇳🇺🇲 War movies 🎬 what was ever made what's showing Vietnamese🇻🇳 Army and American 🇺🇲 Army in Positive Look. And the best positive affection was been made by Mel Gibson - if Mel wasn't been there then it wouldn't give more audience.
jesus , i always expected that attack plane the sky raider / p51 looking plane was a CGI , they ACTUALLY had him come in for that gun run , my god he was so close to the ground , absolute insanity
Loved the movie and the Historical Accuracy, right up until the final battle scene when all the Vietnamese lined up to get shot down by the hovering Huey's. That NEVER happened, and it is an INSULT to those who fought and died there to pretend there was a "Win" in the column, for either force. SSG. U.S. Army (Medically Retired) Infantry / Sniper / SOF Intel (SOT-A), multiple tours
welp even if it did not happen it was one of the most emotional scenes and one of the best but just cause your former military doesnt mean you get the right to say its an insult ......... and your tours????? were they in vietnam????
@@brodieelement3284 actually that he is retired from the Military and that the movie goes way out of bounds on the "final charge" he is absolutely within his right, as retired military to be insulted by the scene. The scene is total BS for several reasons. Who are you to say how he can feel about a scene in a movie. You literally have no clue. Let's start with the fact that you call him former Military....There is no such thing as "Former Military" Once a Soldier always a Soldier. Your opinion of a scene in a movie "based on a real story" regardless of how cool you think it was is meaningless to that of a retired Military man who is insulted by the liberties taken by the director....Even if it did not happen?.... Let me clarify the final charge never happened. Huey's did not have fixed mini-guns in 1965 and Crandall and Freeman were awarded the MOH for flying in and out of a Hot LZ with nothing to protect them but their door gunners. Hopefully this doesn't insult you as an avid movie fan as it WOULD insult a Veteran.
@@adamr6794 The only people that should be insulted, are those on THAT battlefield. I tell you, this current generation of veteran UA-cam commentators are so different than any other generation. I never heard a single WWII vet get hellbent about any WWII movie.
Yes, filmed in the hot steamy jungles of Southern California lol I CAN NOT take this film seriously watching guys getting shot up next to Oak and Eucalyptus trees... gimme a break. Yeah obviously back in the day there was a heavy presence of both NVA and Vietcong troops on the outskirts of Ramona, Escondido, Temecula, Murrieta and Rancho Bernardo
A Mel Gibson tribute to someone high up on the command ladder that wanted to channel John Wayne.as they tried out their new rifles and helo's....Swashbuckling troopers riding in on their steel rotary horses..who cared about intel and situational awareness.?? Then came the non-negotiable reality.. A train wreck turns into a bloodbath..
A Hell of a lot of good men died so Hal Moore could get his movie. The Regular Army officers knew they couldn't and wouldn't be allowed to win. Through it all though they got medals and promotions. The dead are dead and good ol' Hal got his glory.
The love for one another the basic truths has and was always greatly exaggerated deeply, most U.S. troops actually hated one another and hated the service,no wonder no movie ever captured so called basic truths of love for one another.

In terms of the "message" , Great Movie. But the movie itself? I wasn't very impressed with. Im was very Luke Warm. The technical direction was off, and all the rest of it. Didn't seem realistic like a Spielberg movie, for instance, which are so realistic one feels like they can Grab objects from the Screen.

Agree, thanks for your service and sacrifice.
One of the best movies that I ever have seen. So moving!!! I was crying inside...
Indeed! The spirit of this country , at that time was so well captured ! America was great. Hope that God will make this country great again!
I was crying outside, bro.

A very moving portrayal of the battle. As ever its about the men to your right and to your left. Heartbreaking.

Same, i don't care i you served for 1 month, 13 weeks, 6 months, 3/4 of a year, 2 years, a decade or more.
Fact!👍🫡
It's actually exactly the same as any high-risk partnership.

In the early part of the movie there is an aerial shot of part of Main Post. It was good to see the building where I lived in 1966-67.

Absolutely brilliant movie!
Absolute garbage
Very moving scenes, so good performed that real people portreyed who observed, were moved.
I know for a fact I watched this at the movies 5 times before I deployed to Afghanistan, it made a difference, what hero's!
a good friend of mine took part in that battle. he was a mortarman his name is Vince Cantu. he is a great guy...miss ya Vince!
VERY WELL made movie.
I loved we we soldiers

Really great movie. But my God the scenes with the wives back home were terrible.
One of the worst movies i have ever had the opportunity to sadly watched, absolute garbage.
