I am a 77yr old lady in Alabama...
As a child our family and relatives would gather in the country and reopen the old church of our ancestors and have an "An All Day Singing" with dinner on the ground. People in the community would clean the church, everyone would bring food to be shared, kids would swim in the creek (where many were baptized by submersion...as we were Baptist), the adults would come in and out of the church partaking in the singing of the old hymns...it was a fun yearly event for all 😊

The last service held at Phillippi was in November 1978. The last member of the church was Mrs. Tom (Forrest McMickle) Cook. She died January 13, 1975 at age 84.

What a beautiful place, the church surrounded by the pines and trees. The wooden marker is indeed amazing!! It would be nice if you could place some sort of additional marker there to assure the location of the place of the "unknown" person's burial would be known in the future. Memories how sweet the sound, and meaningful they can be, especially those with your grandmother. You are fortunate that your family has shared so much history with you. Dinner on the ground and table, how amazing the simple traditions were and how connected they made the congregation and neighbors. Oh, yes, the Baptist and Primitive Baptist to be sure did not cotton to the Masonic practices to put it mildly. It was seen as a cult by my mountain folks. I do hope you return soon and cover the history of the church. I do wish you could somehow save this one. The windows, doors and siding, gone and destroyed - it is a shame that people are so destructive. Such a marvelous sunny day this was. Thank you to Cecil for his assistance and future art work. Thank you, Robert for sharing such a personally meaningful Sidestep Adventure Into History. Enjoyed it very much!! ❣❣👍👍❣❣

I absolutely love how excited you get over finding these 'old' grave markers. It's so lovely that you go out and record all of this. We have such a different mindset, something from the 1800's is just Georgian or Victorian, it's not really considered old. Something prehistoric is considered old. I really need to read up on your indigenous peoples and see how far back that history goes. Well done for doing all of this, these people should be remembered. Best wishes from the UK

What a beautiful cemetery and church. It's a wonderful feeling to know where your ancestors are buried. I can understand why it means so much to you. The wooden marker is an awesome discovery. It amazes me it's lasted so long, but you did explain how. Great job, Robert and Cecil. I hope there's a way for the church to be preserved for many years to come.

Gorgeous area. The church sure has been sturdy over the years. Really enjoyed seeing some of the old graves. I have Chapman and Green ancestors on my dad's side of our family tree. Most of them ended up in east Texas back when the government gave them farming areas to homestead. Thanks for sharing, Robert.

Robert! You and I are related! Missouri Perdue and Phillip Jordan are my 2nd great grandparents. I’ve looked for this old church and cemetery! Thank you for sharing! I’d love to get some photos of the graves there. I’m also related to the Woodall and Chapman. Perhaps others buried there. I’d love to know where to locate the old church records. I’m in PA so it’s not easy for me to research there. I’d be happy to pay you for your time! I share the love and passion for history and family research. Feel free to reach out to me.

Robert, it was an honor to get to be with you on your trip down memory lane. Loved the wooden marker! 200 yrs old?! What an amazing find!
Seeing your own ancestor's graves is truly exciting! As many graves as you discover, it's extra special that you get to find your own family.💜
Such a sentimental visit for you!☺️ How sweet your memories are. Remembering being there with your grandma are special memories indeed. How nice of her to share historical information with you. She'd be proud and pleased as punch to see what you do now. Seems she liked knowing ancestory and history of the area. Quite possibly she prayed for you to get bit by the history bug - and now you're a historian and a preservationist to boot! I'm sure she's smiling!😊

I have been to my Dad's stuff but he was from Pennsylvania, so that's a 12 hours drive to get there. My parent both came from other places and landed in Michigan. What a wonderful video you shared with us Robert. There’s much appreciation in what you bring to us n knowing how much it impacts your life. You were truly blessed with a family that shared so much history with you as you grew into adulthood.
I wish I could say the same for myself. I would love to know some history on my mother’s side. Her born n raised in Alabama. All I know was my great grandfather was a Baptist preacher n they had some strong beliefs. I don’t believe there’s anyone left alive in the Brasher line to be able to find anything out.
I can sympathize with you in regards to the church. I felt the sentiment seeing it standing tall n still strong. Amazing about the wooden headstone. I never knew that even existed. I got goosebumps as you shared it.
What a beautiful day in making this memorable video. Looking forward to more. Many thanks to Cecil for help n will look forward to his drawings.

I too enjoy old churches, old cemeteries their history and exploring. Jordan is a very old name here in Eastern N. C. where l live and grew up going back to the early 1700's and onward to now. Many owned and lived in Bertie, Martin, Washington and others counties in Eastern N. C. Jordan is pronounced Jordan in many families here now but in older times it must have been pronounced Jerden or Jourden as you do. An road in front of my grandparent's old house in Martin County N. C. is the Jourdan's/Jerden's Thicks Road. Enjoy your history and appreciate your desire to help preserve it. Thank you and Merry Christmas!

The potential slave cemetery is a truly wonderful find! Oral storytelling has its place for sure. It can be hard to know when and what to trust in terms of it, but I always think that it began with at least some kernel of truth. For all the reasons you pointed out, that seems to be the case in this instance. It would be especially wonderful if others with connections to this church end up seeing the video and begin sharing any of that information that might still be around in folks memories. I hope more of that history comes to light through y'all's visits there. The church is amazing and even in photos and video has a great feeling about it. I just came across a quote by the architect Buckminster Fuller in which he said, "When I am working on a problem, I never think about beauty but when I have finished, if the solution is not beautiful, I know it is wrong." This church would be a perfect example of this in my mind. Built in the late 1800s and even the early original with its giant hand hewn beams, the church was surely a practical structure meant to serve a purpose and the primitive baptists certainly were not traditionally grandiose. But just looking at that structure now, in its dilapidated state with missing windows, siding and doors, graffiti on the walls and a leak in the roof, it is a beautiful, awe inspiring structure. Thanks for sharing it with us, Robert.

Beautifully written, Joy.😊 This site has a sentimental impact on Robert, which made the visit even more special.
The church still stands tall and proud. Oh boy, if those walls could talk! Imagine the worship, the teachings, the friendships, baby baptisms, weddings, and funerals.
Even though this church building is looking kinda rough, the vibe of the church still looks ready to host another gathering; to raise the roof in worship; and to welcome people through the doors for Bible teaching time. Hallelujah!🙋🏼‍♀️🕊️🙌🏼

In our part of Missouri wooden markers were very prominent for the poor after the Civil War. They were sometimes carved and were kept up, but eventually rotted down. Wooden Crosses did the same. Here they were known as Head Boards and foot boards, with name date of birth and death and all information just like a stone, but not as costly, especially when folks were buried wrapped in white cloth or blankets.

So when you were standing there talking about the wooden grave marker right behind you in the background to the right of the wooden marker is some kind of a stone wall. I assume you went over and checked that out? Also, the wooden marker appears to be made out of cedar which is a naturally preserved wood similar to pressure treated, which is probably why it survived.

I can't help but wonder if there was a way to get a hold of any underground sonar detectors, I don't know the name of them but so you could find the lost graves using sound. Usually colleges or Universities have such things that on occasions the towns can borrow the equipment. It might be a good thing to ask around the town council and such if one can be located to use in finding the lost graves, would make great episodes to share and watch!

I don’t have gpr and it is cost prohibitive. We can usually use other methods to confirm however. GPR also can’t be used in really dense woods generally as it needs room to roll

Been reading lots about and by 'Mark Twain' recently. He was a man whse heart was in th right place and could not stand hypocracy. Don't believe he was a liar.
His accounts of small farm slaves, the way they were treated and the affections that developed over a life time of association are very different from the virtuious 'Puritan' view.

And her husband, my gg grand father is buried in the Guthrie cemetery he got killed in a gin mill at age 37 in Euphala county Alabama. I am researching to see if I can find any connection.

It’s a bit surprising to have no date or dates on the children’s graves. They may have been stil births, of maybe the dates are unknown.

Surely the land owner would sell you the church if they knew you was gonna restore it also it would make a new follow along for UA-cam as you restore it

When looking for a graveyard for slaves, you will not find tombstones. You would be looking for small rocks or sea shells that cannot be seen at first glance... Brad Cunningham, Friends of Coleman-Leigh-Warren Cemetery.

@@bradcunningham7019 yes, generally speaking. But in these sand counties they didn’t have the available rock like we do in the counties I’m usually in.
