I don't know why but I like to watch these type of videos before going to sleep
me too jason...
Ya,i agree.i feel same
Ha me too
same here
Same here sir it feels real good.God has made everything beautiful
When I was young I was in the Boy Scouts, we did all of our camping trips in the winter time. Enjoyed the hell out of it , never thought about the cold weather, always had fun times. Today at 57 my body could not take the cold or sleeping on the ground anymore. I loved those days and do miss them.
Sounds like some great times! We did the same as kids and loved it
Me too. He's not dressed for this cold. I was a boy scout too I am 60 so same era as you. I use to specialized in getting poison ivy and oak. We use to tell ghost stories at night but one night we had a real creepy thing happened to us in new Hampshire. Really scary and unexplainable.
@@petercole8798 don't know about you but I'm not happy with the image of what they are doing with the boy scouts today.
Well ya I had some interesting times there too. You know what I mean.
Thanks for this video well done! No ear-raping music, no talking and just the sounds of nature. Perfect!
I'm glad you appreciated it. :) Like my original build video of the shelter, I wanted to keep it simple
Used to do a lot of overnights when I was young with my brothers and my buddies. Always come back to this video just to remind me of better times.
Sounds good! I’m glad you enjoy it
You know what I like about winter camping. That if you get little colder, put another log. And that is priceless.
I like your video!..no stupid music, rambling,..just the sound of nature, good job.
Thanks! Just tried to capture it out there
Yeah, nice but why the music has to be stupid.smh.
You're absolutely right...
crazy hourse metaspencer & “my self reliance” vloggers 😬 Nature, best sound ever!
Me too, i love the sound of nature, it 's giving me peace of mind and help me relaxed. Awesome video @metaspencer. 👍😇💗
Thanks for letting us enjoy the sounds of quiet.
Oh you bet. That's the best part of being out there :)
I live in south Texas where we do not get much snow if any. I don't know why i find these types of videos with very cold/freezing weather and basic comforts very appealing?!?! I would one day love to go out and try this lifestyle. Thanks for the video!!
You should come up north one winter ... you might like it!
And you might decide you like soth Texas a whole lot more! Ha ha
"camp on brah"..!!.... dudes just keeping it simple...I love it👊
Oh yeah!
I bet when you got to your car and turned the heater on full blast, it felt so dang wonderful. Speaking from experience after camping one night in weather like this at the Gila wilderness.
Yup. Cold to the bone
Great video. All real and no corny music. Just a bare bones night out in the weather.
Thanks!
That's was incredible night out,, warm,, cozy,,, and I must admit,, safe too,,, better than the inner-city
Haha
Certainly a lot better than sleeping outdoors in a box in the inner city!
Willpower, durability, patience, and determination
It is not owned by all humans, these are rare
well said
That floor being above ground, bet he froze his tail off. Speaking from experience. ❄️❄️❄️
Thanks so much for not feeling the need to explain what you're doing! Camp on bro!
Oh I’m glad it worked out. Thanks!
Yeah, I like this video too. Loved the nature sounds. You didnt need to talk.
Of Course you do, keep sharing your memories, stay safe.
Frame the front in and make a simple wood stove out of an ammo can or old propane tank. The old snowmobile trail sheds are larger with a dirt floor so you can have your fire inside under cover at least and retain more heat.
great ideas .... I'd like that to all be temporary, as it sure is nice to have it open in the summer. thanks!
Nothing says you could not build the wall in panels that would simply bolt in place.
hartstudebakerkid I really like this idea... thanks!
Im not a camper but i see a great need for a stove unit close by and insulation and at least comfortable bedding.. really interesting vid.
Yep, all those improvements would be nice ... but we typically use the shelter in the summertime when the open design is oh so nice. Anyway, thanks for checking out the video!
@@metaspencer thanks for your reply buddy..
This looked so peaceful.... I'd love to do something like this!
Thanks! I’m eager for another trip myself
Ps- you don’t need an axe.. especially a 3/4 axe. As said below / just burn one end of it,
Feed it through the fire. Save your energy. Also suck on hard candy just prior to sleep- boosts your sugar intake and increases your metabolism. Drink tons of water because in very cold weather your body needs a lot more water to digest your food intake. Pee before going right to bed; so you don’t wake up at 2-3am- having to pee.
Throw in wool socks into bottom of
Sleeping bag-prior to leaving from home. Swap out at night for socks of the day wear liner socks under wools socks to wick away foot perspiration. ( Been camping/climbing/arctic winter mountaineering for 72 nights a year for 45 years.). Love that your outdoors a lot
Nice tips man!
a well prepared camp. build a shelter the last few days or month then when the winter's come, he use to go to it. 😊
Nice solo camping. I wish I had a piece of property to build my own getaway shelter, to unwind and relax with nature. For now, camping in state campgrounds, but it's still great to getaway.
We do most of our camping on public land and in wilderness areas -- but it sure is nice to have this getaway by our creek. Take care
Why does this video seem so satisfying?
Eu gostei muito de assistir o vídeo de construção da cabana é muito bom mesmo.
Obrigado! Foi divertido construir
Awsome bushcraft shelter and out of repurposed wood. You did an awsome job. Id love to have a spot of my own like that.
Thanks! It’s been a great getaway this summer
Plain and simple. Good video of something a lot of us would love to do.
thanks for checking it out!
Metaspencer : - I am from India. Snow is always wonder for us except few Indian places. I liked it was Complete silence in this video. Further I would like to spend some time here as you did.
Snow makes the whole world silent ... you would love it
I'm also from India here is lots of snow in winter man in north
Lucky chap, I love snow. I mentioned in my comment "except few Indian Places". Moreover the video is from Saskatchewan, Canada where temperature goes -40 or below...........it doesn't happen in India.
@@rnsawant999 yess all over canada it will be -40 but india also hv places where temp goes -40 but all over india it doesn't happen
Name any single Indian place where temperature goes below -40.
Calm...suspense....braveness....like horror movies great plz upload more like this
Thanks for checking it out!
Wow that must have been a sleepless night no doubt.
Loved the vid. Sometimes we need to just do things like this. Clear the mind. Just be single minded for a while. Stay warm thats all that matters; build the fire dont worry about anything else.
Well said. A break form the normal
Wow loved it! I remember reading Boys Life as a youngster....this reminded me of the skills I learned from the magazine.
Nice of you to say
I slept in lean to ,for a week in the winter in New York State, you have to prepare
Yourself for loneliness an quiet.I lost 20 lbs, worth the experience.
Try a bivy sack. Canvas bottom, Gore-tex top. Put your bag inside and it covers your face. Some have a small pole to make an air pocket over your head.
The put boots in that which saves room for water bottle in your bag. Nice vid.
Yeah, great ideas ... nothing like a bivy and insulation underneath you on cold nights
Meu maior sonho a realizar e um dia poder fazer um acampamento num desses lugares Deus sabe o quanto quero fazer
Espero que você tenha a chance de fazê-lo e siga seus sonhos!
If u ever go back to this place..5. suggestions
1. Place hooks on the ground floor beam..this way u can pull down the tarp n tie the tarp to the hooks
2. Make a wood box.. to place some wood n tools
3. Next time make a C shape fire protector n place some tin foil on it.. That way.. Ur fire protector logs won't burn out n send the heat toward the hut.
4. Place a space reflective blanket on the inside of ur Hut.. Brings the hot air down...ud be warm
5. Carry a hot water bottle with wood cover.. Fill it with hot water.. Place it inside ur bag.. 15min before u get in ur cocoon sleeping bag. Ur feet will be warm
Great ideas. It’s on our land so we hang out there a lot
Great video! Now I’m gonna watch on how he built his shelter 👌🏼
You need a reflector behind your fire, this lean to is like heating an old time bakers tent in winter. Rocks or a log made reflector helps a lot.
Yeah, you said it. I have a huge rock pile to move over for that purpose. The shelter is ideal is summer and darn cold in winter, as it is
John Harbin how about another wall and a woodfire and getting a massage of a cute squaw.. hey now we're talkn
beautiful video withe beautiful nature sound ..the fire and the snow just beautiful 👍👍👌 thanks mate
Thanks!!
01:25 ... So much silence... you can even hear the sound of wind... this is what called peace☺️
absolutely
This just made me so relaxed, Thank you!
Oh great! I’m so glad
If I don't pay my rent I will ask him if I can move in.
Things to leave at the shelter would be a square shovel and broom, hung up under the ridge. A sheetmetal stove would require far less fuel; with a chimney through the wall it would be OK to drop the canvas, so the entire structure would be warm and dry. The siding might be better run vertically, with battens over the gaps; this would reduce draughts; and a longer overhang would keep the floor in better condition. Putting a built-in bench near the back wall would make a nicer place to sleep, and gear could go under the bench so that drifting snow doesn't cover it. Axe needs something to cover the edge, otherwise a trip and fall could be lethal.
I completely agree and can see your vision, here. In addition I'm thinking shelving for more wood and kindling, as well as a few shelves (perhaps even with doors). A more permanent fire pit with stone reflector would be nice, though my stones tend to explode when near the fire ... Thanks for the ideas!
I love the shelter, but i would have some sort of permanent fireplace/wood stove/something to reflect the heat into the shelter. Leave an old broom there to keep it swept out. No padding or insulation under that bag had to be miserable to some extent. But overall a great video. Keep them coming on this shelter, i love it!
I agree with all your points, and I want to add better and more separate wood storage. Thanks for checking it out!
I was thinking of some sort of windbreak a couple meters to the windward side of the fire. The poles weren't perfectly straight before they were chopped, but they could have helped.
Jimmy Walker me too, was thinking a stove and door go a long way
Good point ... next time
I'd just go down to the local wal mart and buy that stove yer talking about...lol
Nice , I've slept in a lean-to in below zero weather a few times , the hard floor was worse than the cold .
agreed: it makes for a long night
I think I'll pass 😂
Looks too cold!
I would have got up and left too! No fire, no food, no stay!!! Unique video for sure!
Haha ... well said. Thanks for checking it out
Looks like a lot of fun. I think I would sleep in your deer stand/hunting blind you made because it looks like it blocks the wind better. Nice video
Yeah, you’ve got a point there! But not as close to the fire. Always great to hear from you!
metaspencer thanks for taking the time to respond
Bigfoot And Bananaman 2
First thing we always did was to sweep the floor, always had a corn broom tucked up in the overhead. It is easier to sweep snow than water.
a broom like that is out there now ... good idea!
Nice summer shelter, but nneds serious improvements to be a comfortable winter retreat, but I like it for what it is.
Yeah, you nailed it: awesome in summer and a bit too open/exposed in winter. I'll have to modify it a bit this summer to get it working for a year-round camp
Mike Howard I think your just being nice
I cant sleep on a "hard" matras , you sleep on a cold hard floor . whow ! you rock.
Once in a while, anything is possible
Your boots are going to be mighty cold when you put them on in the morning. I always slept with mine inside my sleeping bag when I was in the Army.
Oooo, good idea!
Ditto that one the boots. Great video but next time add a good pad and put the boots in your bag. We used to winter camp all the time when younger and it sucks putting on frozen boots in the morning!
I hate the feeling of cold boots! No matter how often I do it, it still feels like they’re wet inside! Haha
Wish I'd have thought of that too...when I was about 16 we went on outward bound training in winter in the English lake district, someplace high up above Borrowdale. It was sub zero temperatures, we all left our boots in a row out of the snow bewteen the tent and the fly sheet at one end. Next morning they were all frozen solid. We smacked them loose then held them fairly close to a primus stove to make them semi usable. I guess our instructor should have lnown better. But we just had a laugh and carried on...@@Entrailss
Oh boy that sounds like a tough one!! Burrrrrrr
Awesome video brother ignor the few haters in your comments slot cuz they most likely are 500 lbs stuck inside mommy basement watching my 600 ld lfe with a thumb up ther keystor an dont go outside let alone camp in the winter. So keep it up bro
Thanks for that. I really appreciate it
One thing you can always count on in You Tube is critics and know it alls in the peanut gallery.
John Doe like you Johny boy doe :)))
Another thing you can reliably count on when you google winter camping on You Tube is an avalanche of videos by people who don't know how to stay warm and comfortable without a fire. Oh sure, you can tough it out overnight, but why put yourself through that ordeal when you can be comfy? I pay attention to the details on films like this. The lack of sleeping pad was a no-brainer, but among other things, I noticed that the OP didn't bother to change into dry socks before getting into his sleeping bag. That guarantees cold paws until they eventually dry out in the bag.
Your shelter looks like a bus stop man. I’m sure you like it. Thanks for the video!
hey, great idea: find an old desktop and move it to our land :)
I like a man with few words, love your video, thank you guy
Funny how many comments appear here are by people who have never slept outdoors overnight in snow country, and can't imagine why anyone would do such a thing.
Let me put it this way. You learn a lot the first time, and you learn it the hard way. You learn life's little lessons that are true only in cold country, like learning that hard part of the game is not about staying warm, which is pretty easy to do. It is about staying dry more than anything else. And you learn that your own breath can be an enemy, because it is so wet.
Well said. Life can have few unique experiences or many ... we decide
I bet this was a fulfilling evening for you, especially since all the people ragging on you in the comments were nowhere to be seen, heard nor read. Gets me wondering about what's stopping me from new experiences.
Haha ... well said. It’s rare to have a truly memorable night in this life
Nice sturdy structure, only needs a front cover to keep the weather out. Maybe a little more padding to sleep on. Enjoy your stay. Thanks for sharing
Yep, a few more comforts would be nice. Thanks for checking it out!
No sleeping pad?? I know that had to suck.
ended up on the pack, but wasn't able to show that in the video ... wood planks were surprisingly insulating. But boy, those winter nights last a lonnnnng time
metaspencer you're a trooper for sure my friend!
@@metaspencer I also thought wood floor is too hard and cold to be comfortable (I mean tolerable), but I figured since the shelter is there, why NOT use the floor? With that said, of course a pad would have been nice. If you're like me, you're tough enough to endure when you have to, and wise enough to not do such if you don't. Cool little 3-sider.
As you get older, you will want the comfort of a sleeping pad! Don't leave home without one!
Everyone needs to do this to experience just how good and relaxing it is to be self sufficient for an overnight trip in the woods during winter conditions. By the time you have your shelter and fire going, you feel pretty good about yourself. Then when you make a supper you can enjoy by the fire, it is a feast you will remember. A little smaller area in that lean to might have been easier to heat and hold the heat if you made a quick reflective wall of simple vertical pieces of wood in a wall. But if you are warm enough and content just use it your way and enjoy.
Well said. Sleeping out always resets my mind and spirit. Thanks for checking it out!
The shelter appears well built. Of course it should have a front wall running have way across to the support pole. And even a wall going from the support wall towards the back leaving a door to enter the enclosed area. Similar to how a proper dog house is built with an inner partially closed off area to help keep the wind out.
I found it funny you would carry a heavy ax but not a light sleeping pad.
I guess there are a lot of different ways to do things ... I tend to use the shelter mainly in the summer: it's a great place to watch the fireflies and chill out.
When I don't feel sleepy I watch this video , it always works 😀 , this video is magic 💫
haha ... very good!
Great video! Looked like a great time!
Thanks!
I saw alot of things I would have done better. Sweep the snow off the floor. Lay down a pad or pine boughs or leaves even as a pad to make a layer against the cold floor. Hang a shiny mylar sheet across the back wall and a clear plastic sheet over the entrance to trap in the heat from the fire. You can get it toasty warm in even a rough shelter using this method. Lastly, put your change of clothes in the sleeping bag with you so you have warm clothes to change in to in the morning. When I used to winter camp, my dog would crawl into the bottom of my sleeping bag. She stayed toasty warm, and so did my feet. LOL
Yes, you could do better ... but at least I did it
That was brutal. Dude, many would have died, or at least lost some digits. That teeters on credulity.
When I want to escape I watch this video, I'm glad there is no music in the background, great video
So cool to hear
It’s clear you connect with nature, discomfort and all. Great video, made me want to be there. Thanks.
Nice of ya! Be well
What a peaceful video. Thanks for sharing.
It was a fun one to make!
good video, nice fire, good gear,
ample skills
Cool. Keep doing it and spread the word.
You may want to store a broom at the shelter for sweeping out the snow. Also, you get a sheath for that axe from Amazon or on ebay.
Great ideas ... a broom is on my list, as is a more permanent fire ring and some storage. I'm thinking the far end could be a nice set of shelves for firewood and whatnot. Thanks for the tips!
You need to plug all the gaps in your shelter with mud to cut down on the drafts. It would be a lot warmer if you did that. Also, why no sleeping mat??? Mats make it so much warmer and more comfortable. It wouldn't hurt to build a permanent firepit since you have a pretty permanent shelter.
Better you than me, the closest I like to get to cold, is no heat in the bed room and crack the window at night. I did snow blow this morning in the lowest high temperature in all recorded weather history this morning. Glenn Lever
That Arctic air is too much! Good to hear from ya Glenn. Take care
The sound of the crackling fire.....yes!!!!!!!!
Oh yeah!
I would have got some clear plastic to put across the front.
Yep, you called it
We always have to watch the person walk a few miles into where they are going to camp. I would have patched the gaps in the shelter. That helps keep the heat in the structure. Also, construct a reflector behind the fire. Just some thoughts.
Great ideaS. Thanks for checking it out
Frame the front in and put a stove in it. Then you will have something
You are very brave, good for you.
I think a couple things. 1) why didn’t you take the weeds in front of building,, bunch up one end, you have a broom!. 2) I would have picked up the wood you had out by fire, put it in building also. I noticed you had tarp rolled up , in front, could have used if needed.
But I figured this is the first building, and in time it will be for wood and storage, as you build your house. Good luck, just an old lady’s ideas😊
great ideas! I most like the idea of the broom. As for the tarp, I tend to use it during summer rainstorms ... thanks for checking out the video!
Awesome a bottle of wine herb and relax
what a wonderful experience. I have been blessed to have camped all over through many areas and differing temps. Every camp has its own unique flavor. Thanks for a great video!
Very well said. Every time I sleep outside I feel reset, in some way. Take care
03:20, I love that moment in your video. I wish I were there.
Oh yeah! When the sky gets dark and you’re happy to have a fire
That is a nice looking shelter you have and with that sleeping bag you should be able to sleep good at night as long as the fire is burning.
thanks for checking out the video!
Great video... keep one Dog with you ( if you are alone )
Guru Rajesh and a loaded weapon please young man
TROOPER 👍🏼
I find these videos super calming. The best part: when you whipped out a knife and started whittling. Did you make the wooden knife you used to slice your fish?
You got it on the wooden knife ... I should add some whispering sounds for xtra calming :)
Nice job taking the time to cut the extra firewood for later or the next person needing to shelter down.
that's the only way to do it :) thanks for checking out the video!
This is rocking dude.
oh yeah! thanks
A lot to learn but one tough young man! Do another video and use what you learned from this experience in the future! Also try to think long term instead of what to do for one night! Good luck on your future endeavors!
As a matter of fact I just did what you said ... link on the top comment up above
It's funny how more people have watched this video than the entire population of Nunavut. In fact, more than 3 times as much.
But Nunavut matters! 😂
this is lux. i spent every winter of minus 30 in trench during my mil service.
wow, that sounds tough! it's cool to know just how much a person can take
Some kind of insulation under that sleeping bag and cover that ax head.good little shelter though.🌲
Good points ... shelter is fun, especially in summer
Also the movie this most reminds me of is Meru. I saw it with Laura. She didn’t want to go but grudgingly admitted that it was pretty cool
I haven’t seen it! If only the shelter had cable ...
Awesome video looks like a great time, hope your back wasn’t broke in the morning lol, curious why you didn’t use a sleeping pad or something for comfort and to help keep u off the cold ground.
I wanted to go as basic as possible... but did end up on my pack!
Plz upload more snow nd rainy camping videos just like in this style....i mean calm nd nice to watch
Thanks for the support! That's my plan
5:17 Dang that looks miserable. Very peaceful video ❤
Tough but memorable. Thanks for checking it out!
With a simple bit of plastic (semi-clear) as a "door" across the front you could've made the inside of that Shelter 70F+.
That's my plan for next time out there in the cold ... thanks for checking it out!
Insulated sleeping pad!
Interesting how so many people who commented have ZERO idea how to keep warm in freezing weather without building a fire. Hint: Wear proper clothing. This guy doesn't even know enough to leave the cotton pants at home, or use an insulating pad under his too-thin sleeping bag. And "minimalist"? I don't think so. Not with that giant axe strapped to your knapsack. Also, I just love the way the smoke blows into the shelter...
You really seems to like the wild nature. I wonder why you did use any special mattress. It keeps cold away and you sleep better. I liked your video. When I was in the army we had to learn cope in the forest. It was - 25 in C. :) But when I was younger it was just fun. When I was a kid we used to built shelters in the forest during the summer time and we used to sleep there.
If you check out my other backpacking videos, you'll see that I have tents and sleeping pads ... for this overnight, I wanted to be as minimal and possible and see how it went.
I like it..cook a meal, spent the night go home next morning. nice video..
Thanks. Nothing like keeping it simple. Can't wait for next winter
