- There's no money in horror games. Not according to EA at least, who made Visceral Games transform Dead Space 3 into an action game. What could possibly go wrong?

Thank you
thanks for timestamps
I've never been able to do those mashing quick time events.
Glad you haven't thrown in the towel
Just started to watch but - **Thank you** for clearly separating proper use of word 'accessibility' and what publishers misleadingly use it for.
Thinking about it now that might be why a lot of people have an issue with "accessibility" being added to the game. Maybe if we could make this distinction more often then more movement and understanding can be made between detractors to accessibility.
If something is added to a already existing franchise for the purpose of "accessibility" it should be optional in the settings or something imo.
Except it really is fine and acceptable to use it in both senses in this kind of usage. Were they saying something like "accessibility features" and talking about it being a shooter as opposed to something like CC, high contrast or color deficiency modes, etc., then yes, the distinction is important, but it's wrong to assert that something's accessibility is only a function of how well it provides tools to aid those with varying physical capability.
I will say I did love the Co op when each character has their own hallucinations. I thought that was a really cool concept and I hope some games use this idea in the future
I thought the same. This needs to be used in other games.
I found it pretty presumptuous to not play the co-op, when that is the major selling point of the game and what is supposed to make it unique, simply based on "I don't like co-op, so I never play it, and I know it adds nothing, because I never play it" flawless logic. I mean, fair enough if you really feel that way, that's why I don't play MMOs (besides Path of Exile) because they usually require a lot of social BS to do anything interesting.
i played the game in coop with my friend and i was playing as Carver, during a mission I saw the hallucinations and was like wtf, my friend didnt know what i was talking about and I had to explain what i see etc. or when i was being attacked and he had to like protect me, that was fun
Glad you’re not quitting completely!
I hate this even more because I am a HUGE fan of John Carpenter's "The Thing" and that movie was going to be a huge inspiration for this game. Thanks EA.......
The game waa good to on xbox
imagine how hungry YOU would be after being in a hibernated state in ice for how many year's
It hurt to hear that this channel isn't as successful as it should be. You deserve better, dude.
Argh, this one gonna hurt. RIP Dead space.
The cliffhanger is just pure evil.
@@CT_Phipps but it is fitting in a way...
@@CT_Phipps there is no cliffhanger, if you have played the DLC you know the true ending...
@@strikeone7803 The DLC ends on a cliffhanger, smartass.
@@LightTrack- EA did the same with Mass Effect 3
God Dead Space was so good, EA killed it because they misunderstood the whole point of the series. Dead Space was amazing, Glen Schofield and co poured so much love and attention into the environment, sound design, enemies, and story. I don't think anything similar will ever be made like it again.
Got that Callisto Protocol game coming. Original guy who made the whole idea for Dead Space is leading the team. So, 🤞
@@adayexpired6370 The comment didn't age well.

there is no sleep, only chris
Its funny because Deus Ex: Mankind Divided will be basically the same story. "Ruined by microtransactions and greed."
I actually really like Dead Space 3 for what it is
I like it a lot as well. My only complaints are that Ellie is made into an awful character from DS2, and that it’s about 5 to 10 hours longer than it needed to be.
Yes! Another Chris Davis video. So much for office work. 😀
Damn, I had this nasty translation to finish and now I have to watch his video. Especially considering I am replaying the first Dead Space right now and planning to play the entire trilogy.
I’m the only one that loved playing DS3 after playing DS1 and DS2 on launch? I mean, is not better than the other two, but by no means was a bad game. On contrary. Loved the Flotilla section and the descend to the alien city.
It’s a good game, but it does go on a bit too long. The flotilla section was a sort of demo for the original gameplay in mind for DS4, where you would play as Ellie and hop between planets. Sadly by the time the game was in its finishing stages, they actively knew there would never be a DS4.
Does anyone wonder how Danik caused Necromorphs on the moon at the beginning of the game, yet the end of the Awakened DLC shows Earth having necromorphs, as if that wasnt going to happen anyways considering the moon had them?
The thing that bugged me most is that there was still a marker on that moon so it's bizarre they just left it while it was infeeste with necros.
On the wiki it says the Unitologists destroyed the marker containment dome or whatever it's called and that allowed the marker they used for power generation on the moon to broadcast the signal to turn dead bodies into necromorphs
Let's hope the old Viceral staff and creator gets their new game right .
The Callisto Protocol
Narrator's note - they did not
It seems like the Marker creators are a lot like the Reapers in Mass Effect. They attract species capable of space flight and take them out before they take over the galaxy.
Humans in Dead Space have completely stripped planets barren and are on a collision course with calamity when they find their first marker. I think it’s safe to say Markers are in fact a galactic cleanup crew.
Not to mention have a Cult that worships them.
@@Ineedgames i think that cult could be looked at as a judas goat. People tricking other people to go to their death.
Fun fact - they Crack Planet's that are classified as a Dead Rock , if the planet DUNE was found they would Snap that dust ball in half with in a year - fertile worlds would be used to produce more ships's and food
Yeah, I saw some parallels to Mass Effect here as well. In general, the whole "ancient alien race gets annihilated by some unfathomable cosmic force" seems to be some kind of trope at this point. Mass Effect, Dead Space, Halo, Freespace and probably some others I forgot, all have this plot thread and frankly it's starting to be a little stale.
I'm commenting now to boost the algorithm, watching later when I have more time.
I do that alot now too lol

Well done gang 👍
You lost me when you said dead space 2 was not a horror game
In comparison to the first game it isn't. As stated in the video it feels more action/horror, which isn't to say it isn't still a horror game of sorts.
@@dh1380 It blended horror and action together but to be honest none of the games are scary after repeat playthroughs, even the RE games aren't very scary.
I remember not being able to play Dead Space 1 in an empty room. Always played it with my brother sitting next to me. He would frequently call out to me and unintentionally jumpscare me.
On the contrary, I spent Dead Space 3 running around the levels while home alone.
Dead space 3 felt more like a Hollywood movie than a Dead Space game.
It’s a shame Visceral Games got shut down and we’ll never see them making a sequel to Dante’s Inferno, Dante’s Purgatory
Haven't the staff of Viceral been transfered to EA's Vancouver and Burnaby Studios?
I completed dantes inferno like 3 times,ah the big cleotitties, the baby making mummy milkers
@@apexfalllegendarium349 And don’t forget King Minos from the Circle of Limbo, who was voiced by Richard Moll who also voiced Two Face from Batman Animated Series.
I mean they can still make a sequel/remake dead space game just not by virceral games
Let’s hope the Castillo protocol brings back the dead space feel again.
It is mind-boggling how out of touch with the gaming community the executives at AAA companies are. So many decisions are made that are immediately obvious to be wrong. It's like they are playing russian roulette to see whether their desperate attempt at a cash grab will somehow fool people and be successful.
Well, they are able selling millions copies of same game every year + microtransaction.
From the execs' point of view, it doesn't matter if they fail because they'll inevitably get a golden parachute. Higher-ups get a different set of rules to everyone elese.
Honestly despite the game’s problems I enjoy playing it from time to time.
Isaac "if you're necro, you get the boot, bro" Clarke would shed a tear.
I'm glad you aren't quitting the channel completely, though it would've been understandable if you did. I've been following your channel since around the Fallout 2 / Baldur's Gate videos and, honestly, I would've hoped your channel would be at least twice as popular by now.
In space . . . no-one can hear you yawn :(
When a Chris Davis drops a video I get so excited!
One thing about your videos that I love is you put timestamp on it. Made it easier to keep track and it looks professional. Keep it up.
Yes, no quitting!!!! Im glad to hear that!!
I heard a rumor that Ellie was originally supposed to be Isaac's co-op partner. But EA nixed that idea because they didn't want any Gamers™ being "stuck playing as the girl".
I'm always tickled by those that try to say this was the best game of the franchise. That EA closed Visceral due to a "vocal minority" who weren't playing the game right (read: not in co-op).
I'm always tickled by those that say the game strayed from what made dead space dead space. In my view the vast majority of fans have no idea what dead space is, from the story to the combat. That's what ruined dead space. I class the thirds as the best, and I know a great deal about the games, not just "it's not horror".
Nobody had problem playing as Sheva in Resident Evil 5 released just a few years ago. So I don't know where those overpaid executives got that brilliant idea. Probably from marketing execs.
@@giorgialadashvili4771 Not to be pedantic, but 12 years is a bit more than "just a few years ago". The social landscape was on paper very different 12 years ago than it is supposedly is today.
@@Axetwin I meant that RE5 (2009) was released "just a few years ago" before Dead Space 3 (2013). Four years ago to be precise. And literally nobody had problem playing as Sheva. Heck, nobody had problem playing as Claire Redfield or Jill Valentine before that either.
@@giorgialadashvili4771 My mistake for the confusion. In any case, we've seen time and time again a disconnect between what developers *think* we want vs what we actually want. I'm not saying people actually had a problem playing as Sheeva or Ellie. Only that the male dominated developmental team didn't want to force anyone to "play as the girl" because for whatever reason they thought that would hurt sales.
Seeing Dead Space getting attention recently makes me so happy.
I hope Callisto Protocol delivers.
I played this strictly co-op with my buddy. We're both huge Dead Space fans. We played the first two on our own (of course) and jumped at the chance to co-op the 3rd. We, honestly, loved the shit out of it. We're actually planning another play through soon. It deserved more love from fans and more support from publishers. Dead Space always leaned more towards action than, say, Resident Evil anyways. With a variety of weaponry, movement while aiming and abundance of enemies. Dead Space was the Aliens to Resident Evil's Alien. Visceral did a *damn* good job with every single game they produced and I'll never forgive everyone responsible for what happened to them.
Sorry to hear about that news at the end. Your videos have been some of my favorite gaming discussion ones
I hope you keep making these videos. They're literally the best of their kind on UA-cam
Oh look another company whose Star Wars game EA killed
I can't believe I'm saying this, but In EA's defence, we don't know how said Star Wars game was turning out. It could have been good but it could have just as easily been average or bad. Every game sounds great before it gets cancelled. I imagine if EA cancelled Anthem before release, there would have been many people lamenting EA "killing a Bioware RPG where you play as Iron Man".
@@FraserSouris except anthem never fooled anyone as an rpg and most people decried it as what it was: a wannabe destiny clone with looter shooter live service approach tied to micro transactions and progression boosters. The point is that EA itself stated they didn’t want to develop any Star Wars game that would take longer than two years to rush out the door. Which usually meant shitting out rushed glitches heavy content like their Battlefronts and squadrons that still have achievements that don’t unlock and glitches that have been present since launch and barely any content upon release.
@@VulturePilot That perception of Anthem happened after the fact. Most people were still expecting a good Bioware style RPG or something to that prior to release and would have gotten angry at EA regardless if they cancelled it.
Also, EA did make Fallen Order.
@@FraserSouris lol no, speak for yourself because a lot of people were absolutely NOT expecting anything of the sort since BioWare hadn’t made a proper RPG since Dragon Age Origins in 2009! Every game after has been less and less of an RPG than the last one and they’ve only tried to push the casual multiplayer market onto these games more and more. Inquisition was a witcher 2/mmo wannabe and it was rightfully called out for it especially when half of its dlc was multiplayer focused. Yeah Respawn shat out fallen order in record time and that game is a stiff, mindless, unoriginal and bland experience. A mixture of souls, tomb Raider, Metroid etc that never comes together. Full of brainless “hold stick forward to slowly advance through small crevasse” sections with a nonsensical story that screams of a rushed development. There is no defending EA’s lazy, imaginationless strategy. They wanted multiplayer, and anything that wasn’t multiplayer was a barbones single player project with almost no real effort or time put in. Anything that required those things was summarily canceled as we saw.
"Legacy of Kain..."
That a name I haven't heard in years. In all seriousness though I really hope a development team can try and snag DS so that people can make the franchise into what I know it can be. It just made my blood boil to hear everything I slowly picked up was true and if there was a sign that a corporation doesn't deserve the money it keeps earning at this point EA would be it.
Thanks for giving me something to watch on my break, looking forward to it
Somehow this channel makes me depressed about gaming's future.
The gaming industry's future is bleak, but this guy certainly gives off a pretentious vibe while making his observations.
There seems to be little joy in his videos.
ohh this is nothing xD may i introduce you to Jim fucking starling son ? check him out :)
I never found Jim Sterling's content to be overly depressing. Like yeah, he covers a lot of really depressing topics in the gaming industry, but he also mentions how these are symptoms of capitalism and we can improve things if we enact laws against predatory micro-transactions and strengthen unions and other things. I dunno, I read somewhere that discussing solutions is a good way to combat depression.
The gaming industry is in a really awful place right now and it's their own fault. They've become downright abusive and manipulative to players with very little care towards the actual product. See Cyberpunk, WWE20, everything EA does. It's not a fantasy. If you only want to hear good stuff, there's plenty of weird shill channels out there but ignoring the problem doesn't make it less true.

This is one of my favourite YT gaming focused channels!
It broke my heart seeing the direction Dead Space 3 went in. Having such a strong start with DS 1 and then DS 2, to then ultimately fail the way it did. Absolutely gutted!
My main memory of this was playing co-op with a friend and getting annoyed at him because he'd spend ages in the upgrade capsules. I forgot about everything else in it.
The better the upgrades the better the chances are on difficult settings
Man I love your channel. It will catch on. Your material is good. It’s the algorithm

Every bit of inventory gameplay footage for DS3 has a player with 10+ medkits... so horror.

While DS3 never reached the lofty heights of the first two...... I’m currently replaying it again just for fun. It’s been a couple of years since I touched it, but I went through and beat all the modes and unlocked the devil horns and suits and yada yada yada. But anyway, I’m replaying it after a few years, and I’ve got to say I’m fucking LOVING it. The micro transactions are super minimal, to the point where if you don’t go looking for them you’ll never see them. The tension is nowhere near what the first one was but there IS still some tense moments/atmosphere, especially in first part of the game above Tau Volantis.
While not a great game, I think the hate is unwarranted.
The stuff this guys says isn’t necessarily wrong.
But still, if you haven’t played it for a while, maybe try it again. You might surprise yourself.
god, the "What!? What does that mean?" line and the accompanying expression is fucking priceless. it's so unnecessarily dumb
I always loved Dead Space 3, yes I hated how intrusive the MTX were in the game and how the horror theme got replaced but I was fascinated more by the lore of the game itself and how the main story made a fantastic job of not only explaining WTF happened in Tau Volantis before Issac and his allies/foes came it without boring me but by also connecting it all to the previous games....but sadly the DLC pretty much fucked any chance of us having a sequel.....it felt like EA straight up saying: *Spoilers ahead*
*"This game didn't sell good so we'll tell you the ending: Everyone Dies, the End"*
Even sadder is the fact that the three letters of each chapter in the DLC form the acronym : R.I.P (Rest In Peace) meaning Earth and Humanity didn't survive and we'll never a see a continuation/sequel.
YES!! Great Video!!

@@mattjindrak Ah yes sorry, I forgot.
I've never played any Dead Space game (yet), but '3 does look like it has a great, dark atmosphere and that it has plenty of creepy/scary moments. Imho. :p
Did not know this game had a Mass Effect armour in it. I enjoy the little cross-overs between games like this.
I can actually see a lot of similarities between the Dead Space trilogy and the Mass Effect trilogy...Specifically in your description of the DS trilogy at the end of the video.
While 3 wasn’t as good as 1 and 2, Dead Space 3 is a fantastic game. Especially the way they did the co-op on it. My brother and I replay through DS3 at least once a year!
DS3 couldn't have been as scary as DS1 or 2. In DS1 nobody, not us as the players, not Isaac knew what we're up against. The threat was different, scary , unique. The whole game was atmospheric with good sound design, ambience and quality. After that, in DS2, we know what we're fighting, we had experience with it, Isaac as well, he jokes about it. DS2 also employed plenty of scare jumps and wasn't fully atmospheric and also had way, way more action that in DS1. Look on UA-cam for a playthrough of DS1 and one for DS2 and compare them, encounter by encounter. But people like to forget that. Yes, it's only DS3 that does it.
The crafting system is a natural evolution of the node improving system from the previous 2 games. Isaac, knowing the tools and the technology, can now assemble and disassemble tools, modify them with various circuits, adapt them to specific situations. He's an engineer, used these tools before, has combat experience with necromorphs. It's very plausible.
As for the number of enemies, yeah, a bad decision, but coincidentally it makes sense because DS3 takes place on a planet covered in corpses, a planet that was once covererd in water and then flash frozen and filled with corpses of an alien species. Isaac basically takes on a full planet of necromorphs. Yeah, there's going to be a lot of enemies. Not to mention the fresh corpses of Unitologists that you kill or of those who commit suicide for their religion.
Universal ammo, I don't know what to say about that. I do know that in DS1 and DS2 I did not have a single problem with ammo. Enemies dropped ammo and medpacks, the game generated ammo for whatever weapons you had equipped. It was difficult to run out of ammo, but that was my experience and I can't talk for everybody else. On the contrary, in DS3 I ran low and one time out, of ammo. Because depending on what weapons you made, some also had a different consumption rate. For example, a rocket launcher utilizes 4 or 5 ammo units per shot. You run out fast if you use that. There were other combinations that used varying amounts.
The love triangle, I agree with you, it should have never been part of the game. The rest of the story and the lore expansion were very good though. The planet, the aliens, the Moon....very cool stuff, the explanation of the actual title of the series in relation to the Fermi Paradox, very cool. The space exploration area in the beginning, flying from ship to ship, awesome.
A problem for me was that the enemies were bullet sponges but I noticed that on Impossible difficulty they go down way easier than on the lower ones. IDK, maybe someone who is more knowledgeable can confirm or deny this bu the last time I played it that was what I observed. Also the game wasn't as polished as the first two and had quite a few bugs. And content locked behind multiplayer component? Not OK with that.
Yes another video!
Dead Space 3 is actually fun tho, the weapons creation along with the co-op is the reason I played it over and over.
Thanks for the video!
Nice video!
The main problem was they removed stun lock from the plasma cutter. It totally took out the option to snap between targets and make split decisions to stun one enemy, take the arm off another, use the kinetic module. It gave the game a challenge. This game is just: use Force Gun effect, knock down everyone, free kills.
Good video bro 👌
Honey wake up

Very thorough video.
