  • The 91st Street station was opened in 1904 as part of the original IRT (Interborough Rapid Transit) line, one of New York City’s first subway systems. Located between 86th and 96th Streets on the 1 line, the station served the growing Upper West Side neighborhood. However, the station was relatively close to its neighboring stops, and by the mid-20th century, it was deemed redundant as train speeds and efficiency took precedence.
In 1959, the station was officially decommissioned as part of a modernization effort, with the newly lengthened platforms at 86th and 96th Streets accommodating the increasing demand for longer trains. Though abandoned, the station remains an intriguing piece of history, with its ornate mosaics, original signage, and vintage tilework still visible beneath decades of dust and graffiti.
