"CAN GOD REALLY PUNISH US FOR FOLLOWING OUR OWN CULTURE?" JOSEPH KAGUTHI RESTATES THIS OLD QUESTION

  • Former PS, top public administrator and Chair of the national Nyumba Kumi security system, Joseph Kaguthi, tells of his father, a Kikuyu traditional priest; of the impact of world wars on the African people in Kenya; and of his experiences and witness as a young boy in a time of war - the Mau Mau war of liberation. He responds to those who say that Mau Mau was an internal tribal rebellion by young men who had been denied brides, as well as those who say Mau Mau was not a nationalist movement. In so doing, he reveals some obscure colonial laws and strategies that were used to segregate the people of Central Kenya region from the rest of the Kenyan communities. The ramifications of this policy still wrack the politics of Kenya. The interview is also quite rich in Gikuyu culture and religion, and it is a pity that so much is lost in translation. He restates a question once posed by the freedom fighters: Can God really punish us for following our own culture? And why would he do that? A powerful and animated speaker, Kaguthi, obviously has the history of this country at his fingertips. It is also obvious that those who went into the prefecture system in the early post-colony were some of the brightest Kenyans.

Kiambu were mostly ngati, chiefs and home guards, still haven't heard anyone spearheading from there to be honest.

@@OneDem99 This is a poor stereotype. Kiambu people were serious Mau Mau fighters in various theatres. Additionally, they were involved in weapons procurement in Nairobi and in the transportation of the same to the forests. They took part in key battles in Limuru and Lari and spread Mau Mau into Narok and Kajiado. Listen to the testimony of Gen Makimei and Gen Ndaiga and others in this channel. We are soon going to upload more.
