When our kids were little we would have a little house on the prairie night. We cooked outside and only used candles and the fireplace for light. We played games and just spent time with no distractions. We would all sleep in the living room together. They thought it was so much fun. Luka seems so much more comfortable around the camera now. He is just the cutest when he is teasing you.

We have chickens in zone 5 and they do really well in our harsh winters. They will lay eggs in the winter, especially if they have access to outdoors, but they just lay fewer eggs. Good Ventilation, dry bedding, a dust bath in a dry area and an electric waterer will be all they need.

We have chickens in Central Canada with cold winters. They do well here in winter. They do not go outside when it is very cold but we have lights on a timer from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. They lay decently well this way better then they did in August when it was so hot.

So glad the outside doggy is working out! Also just remember they are animals and mainly they need wind break relief , dry living conditions and thawed water. 😉 Maybe a tote in the garage for easy access for clean RV bedding would be a solution so that you could use your fireplace as wanted. There are brands of automatic coop door that you can set a time for it to open instead of day/night auto open/close.... that might be helpful for ducks.

Good job with the birds! I’ve had chickens for years and watching all these people that have jumped into chicken keeping recently is driving me crazy. Heaters?! 🤦🏻‍♀️ Sooo many people burn down their entire coop and loose all their animals that way. They’re BIRDS lol. We do deep litter method and feed very early in the morning to get their systems warming up, oatmeal and corn work great in the winter! The only thing I’d recommend is a heated water holder to prevent freeze.

I love Seth showing off his "thumbs up" skills ❤ You got it Seth!
We don't use heat or light on our chickens in the winter either. Why we do have some freezing temps, our winters are probably mild compared to Nebraska, but we find that our new layers lay most of the winter if not all. So if they've just started laying, you might get eggs straight through till next fall.
I've learned that it's a good idea to discourage pup from eating the broken or raw eggs as there's less chance he will become an egg eater. Once they discover there something yummy in there they like to break them open and eat them.
Love this video and definitely want to make whatever that is you just made! Yum!

We have an omlet automatic door on our coop. It turns a light on inside the coop a bit before the door shuts, and they learned quickly to go in when the light turned on. The first few nights I had to go out and shove in stragglers, but the figured it out. Our first flock used to roost in the trees, but we taught them to come down in the evening with some scratch corn. 😊 Whenever we have lost a chicken it's been to raccoons.

It's good to put some natural branches for them to perch on in the coop. Smaller in diameter to medium. It's easier and healthier for them to grip and the roughness of the branches give them air flow under their feet. As they have demonstrated, they like natural branches -- it's what they use in the wild. The ladder might be difficult for gripping and even painful because they are flat, rectangular with no airflow :)

Learning so much about Nebraska too and chickens and cows.....love your new dog and your cats too. I grew up with one brother and two sisters on four acres just a town away from where I live now. Never been any further east then Colorado and New Mexico, but love to camp and travel. We were beach kids and thats where we always camped up and down the coast of beautiful California. We were a "surfing" family and truly loved it. My Dad was a door to door milkman for 32 years and we all enjoyed going on the route with him in the summers of the 50 and 60s. Keep up the great work. Yes, I missed my sons too when they moved out. I think it seemed worse to me maybe because I had a loss in our little family before that.

I live 3 1/2 hours north of Lincoln. My chickens (30) will be going through their second winter. I keep 2 heat lamps (hung from the ceiling about 2-3’ off the floor), and heated water bowls. They also have several inches of pine wood chips to nest in, a low roost and a high roost. They stay inside when they choose. Feed them well, and they will be able keep themselves warm.

I live where it gets easily to -35 Celsius with wind chills sometimes in the -50. My chickens did well last winter with just a heated waterer and a light on a timer. I would use extreme caution using heating lamps. They are a fire hazard so I chose not to use one. My barn is insulated thought.

Edited for correction: if their house was insulated I would not have heat lamps, but it is corrugated tin, so I feel it’s needed. I’m sure they are not as hardy as birds who have no heat in the winter.

@@kamidsjournee I was wondering if their building was insulated or not. I would still be concerned about using heat lamps though.

@@rosannasauereisen2827 honestly, I am too, but I’m not sure what else to do. I try to manage dust and anything flammable. And I pray. Yes, I pray for those silly birds. 🥰

You find your birds lay through winter since it’s there first year! Next year they will probably slow way down, that’s why so many add new chicks to the flock every spring so they get eggs every winter ❤️

There is no better heat than wood heat! I hope you'll put a woodstove or fireplace in your new house cause you'll love it!! I live in Maine and have always had a woodstove, just make sure you clean or get someone to clean the chimney every year!!!

We bought a house in the country in April of 2022 that came with a woodstove. We love the feeling of wood heat! I don't know if I could go back. Especially living in Central Canada where it gets so cold in winter. I felt cold much of the winter previously.

Hi Sarah, you may want to switch out the metal ladders for wooden ones for the winter. Metal tends to freeze and their feet might freeze when they’re roosting on the metal. But otherwise you are doing incredibly awesome! I live in Northwest Minnesota and my birds never had heat lamps or anything like that and they did just fine. I love watching your joy and excitement with the animals!

Pick up some of the extra large vacuum seal bags for the extra bedding. Those are good for out of season clothes too.

Weve never heated our coop. We just keep the water from freezing with a bucket heater. Chickens are hearty birds. We live where it can get to -30, so very cold. They would probably appreciate some heat but will thrive fine without too.
Also I love your real life vlogs with messy house and all! It's more relatable for me 😊
