- The Higgins Armory Museum, located Worcester, Massachusetts, is one of the largest collections of arms and armor in the world. It houses several thousand pieces of armor and weaponry including items from medieval and ancient Europe, and other historical pieces from around the world. Open most days of the year, the Higgins Armory offers a fascinating collection and has interactive areas for children to learn about the history of armor. Please see their website at www.higgins.org for more information about this collection.
We have your traveling exhibition of "Age of Armor" at the St. Louis Art Museum through 5/14/23 -- and it is absolutely mind-blowing. Praise to you for sharing part of your collection with us!
I miss this place so much! Blew my mind when I was a kid
I grew up in the greendale section of worcester in the 50's and 60's. We had everything in the neighborhood, churches, schools, markets, pharmacey, gas stations, library, playing fields, park, and beautiful Higgins armory museum.
to learn of the demise of the higgins armory, which i and my young family were members and visited often in the late 1970s, brought tears to my eyes. i have leaned of it four years after the fact, but it seems to me to have happened "right now.' there should have been a city, state, or even federal grant to save the armor. i am sure the worcester art museum will do their best to preserve and display the collection, but there will never be anything like the higgins armory. i as a bas and our two young boys, as sopranos, were members of the all saints episcopal church that used to sing the christmas concerts at the higgins armory in the late 1970s and the early 1980s when we again lived in worcester. i am very sad, even four years too late.
Most people with time machines would do something crazy or drastic but I would just use it to get to this beautiful museum again. The closing of Higgins armory was truly heartbreaking.
I went here for a field trip in kindergarten it was fun wish it was open again
The good news is the collection has its new home at Worcester Art Museum, the Arms & Armor and living history programming continues (and is always evolving), and the whole new Higgins Armory section at the WAM is currently in the process of being built and installed. Stay tuned in 2024-2025 when it's expected to finally be back all together, and, most of the collection is expected to be on display for the first time ever. (whereas the old place, as Morgan mentioned, you'd only see about 1/4 of the collection on display)
