Paolo Nutini's new album "Last Night in the Bittersweet" is Number 1 in the UK, and nowhere to be seen on the American charts. In all my life, I've never seen a songwriter/singer/musician that appears to be a master of all genres. He is a true musical chameleon. His first album, recorded at the age of 19, was a jazz-pop fusion, his second album was a folk album that sounded like it could have been recorded anytime between 1930 and 1970, and his third album was American funk and soul. After a seven year wait, his fourth album came out with no fanfare or warning on July 1 and it does not disappoint. It's more classic rock and roll than anything else, but folk songs do pop up. This song "Shine a Light" sounds like it was inspired by U2 or Bruce Springsteen, but "Julianne" sounds like it is a long lost song written by John Lennon. On other songs, you can hear Sam Cooke, Johnny Cash, Leonard Cohen, and Pink Floyd influences. Like my other favorite contemporaries Smith & Thell, it is such a tragedy that Paolo Nutini isn't dominating the charts on this side of the Atlantic!
You nailed it! With the soul and passion he expresses through that deliciously layered vocal instrument he is blessed with and has beautiful mastery over how to work it for his desired effect, it almost doesn't really matter what genre he chooses to funnel his artistry and talent through, chances are I'm going to love it and it's going to be awesome.
I'm loving this new album, a handful of real incredible stand out songs (I'd say afterneath, everywhere, through the echoes and children of the stars are the best) and the rest are beautiful, feel good works, awesome mood music. I am from near Glasgow originally but have been state side since 2007 and it's very disappointing that nobody here is buzzing about this album and most don't know who I'm talking about unless I say, "the guy who did that song hey I put some new shoes on" and they are like, "oh yeah" 🫤 I especially want him to be more appreciated here so we can get a.US tour.... I'd love to see him live so much

Beautifully summarized! Here in Toronto, I called a few record stores and they are not aware of the new album release and not carrying it. Well, ended up ordering from Amazon (the last resort).
America if you haven't noticed is pretty much a hot mess right now...it's not surprising. Most are all deaf to this good music for the soul!!

Had the very great pleasure of hearing this track (and others) in The Rabbit Hole at Glastonbury last weekend. Paolo and his band were excellent and it was a privilege to see him in such an intimate, compact venue. They looked like they were really enjoying themselves and the new album tracks sounded great. This, for me, was definitely the stand out track.

What a song , listened to through the echoes for weeks . Great to hear the emotion in his voice . Then this one reigning his voice in around the big 80s synth sound . Tremendous and yes i thought of simple minds too.

Great song. It's got amazing momentum. Great voice and awesome songwriting. The Guitarist at the back does a good job thickening out the rhythm and keeps it simple and big- seen him in some other newer videos doing a swell job on the BV's too.
