My father was an award-winning singer. It seems so obvious now but, from about 1946 to 1958 my father was the number one Al Jolson imitator in his region of Kansas. This, of course, meant black face. He even sang on KING TV in Seattle when he was stationed there in the Navy. Dad later got a master's in American history and marched for civil rights every chance he got. That was my childhood. I was dragged to anywhere he felt people were being oppressed. Like I said, it seems so obvious in hindsight.
