Your solution could be a website, android app, machine learning algorithm or some robotic/hardware stuff. Some Hackathons have limitation like you can use a particular technology only. So Hackathons are like competition of idea/products that solves an existing problem which impacts huge number of people.

They are then given time to come up with ideas and later implement / construct a working prototype of their ideas. If this idea of theirs involves development of apps, they code; if it involves a physical solution, they build it. That is to say, they do whatever is needed be done to demonstrate their idea. 'Hacking' here refers to putting together something with limited resources (i.e. the stuff that you carry in) and limited time. Also, they don't do all of this in one sitting. There will be pre-Hackathons held, where they will be presented with the problems and where they develop their ideas. The best ideas (judging by the way it was presented and by the idea itself) then move onto the final Hackathon where the prototypes are developed, demonstrated and winners selected.
