the theory would be to have read only variables accessible from the ecu, like rpm, oil pressure, whatever. the lazy solution is to link the internet connected thingy to the odb port and call it a day.
That leaves signs of tampering though. Doing it on the software side wouldn't be what most people suspect right off the bat, they're going to look for a cut brake line first.
