Malus is basically an adhd guy who gets random tasks in his head, who gets really powerfull when overwelmed and needs his medication in order to keep it intact
I always love how comedically evil the Dark Elves are. Just like "Would you like some toast? I'm sorry, *Dark* Toast?"
The recent version of SFO did add new mechanics to different corruption types, so it's very possible that the Khorne corruption caused this problem

remember to put your armies into a stance if u can , if u are in ambush stance / channeling etc it saves u on upkeep in SFO
21:12 - might be wrong but I don't think they are "less good crossbows" the shield just means their reload time is slower and fire rate is included in missile strength. SFO means you have to CHOOSE between melee defence and missile block chance OR DPS which I think is good.
I think that because malus ai usually conquers the entire chaos wastes, the ai demons just all went. "I will avoid getting destroyed by malus through the power of being really nice to him"
The crossbows are just as good on the shielded versions, the issue is that they have a much lower reload speed time which presents as a missile strength reduction.
So you get the shields in exchange for less bolts loosed per minute....make your choice i guess?
