  • The team takes 10-ish minutes to chat hunting rifle slings - traditional, modern, and pack-integrated systems. A sling can be one of the best additions to any big game rifle setup. Slings keep your hands free when navigating difficult terrain, hold the rifle to your back while riding a bike on logging road systems, keep your barrel pointed in a safe direction around others, provide stability for offhand shots and more. If you can’t tell, we sling their praises.
    As always, we want to hear your feedback! Let us know if there are any topics you'd like covered on the Vortex Nation™ podcast by asking us on any one of our social media platforms and using #VortexNationPodcast.

    I use the Galco Riflemann sling. There's an adjustable loop on the fore end of the sling to put your arm/elbow through for off hand shooting, or you can just run your arm through and wrap like Mark did. The adjustable strap also works for a way to run your strong arm through the sling, bring the butt to your shoulder, tighten the strap, and the gun will lock to your shoulder and you're actually able to shoot without your weak hand even touching the rifle it's so secure. Very well padded as well. There's a video explaining how to set up and use the sling.

    I started using an Outdoor Connection paracord sling and I’m very happy with it. The upper part is woven paracord and the bottom is adjustable nylon strap material. If I was ever in the woods and needed paracord I could cannibalize it for the paracord. I have a narrow nylon sling that came on a used rifle that I don’t like, but it doesn’t weigh much, so I put it in my hunting pack as a backup in the even I needed to use that paracord sling. The Outdoor Connection one has some stretch/bounce in it as well and stays put on the shoulder, either on my jacket or backpack straps. They’re like $20-25, so very affordable.

    I’ll have to look into those quick release mounts, it’d be a pain to convert but nice once done on everything. I really like my red kettle m19. Personally I carry with my rifle in a scabbard mounted to my pack because when I'm hiking I want that rifle out my way and I use a 2 point sling normally used with AR15's that has QD cups that attach to my stock... So when I'm making a final stalk my pack might get dropped and my rifle is slung in front of me but I can still have my pack on without getting in the way of my rifle and it's much faster to get that rifle up for a shot when it's slung in front of me. It also feels much more secure then the rifle slings that go over your shoulder like the more traditional hunting slings. Great video as always keepem coming guys!!!

    Those neoprene Butler creek slings are great, super comfortable....ive also used Limbsaver slings....very ergonomic. If im stalk hunting with my rifle I usually carry it on my bino harness for rapid deployment. (old military habit). But on long walks in the dark to and from camp....sling is 100% necessary.

    If you move the lower part of the Kifaru Gun Bearer forward on your belt you can carry it vertical and won't be flagging others with the muzzle. Mark's pack belt padded section is probably too short. Eric's would work at the forward lower molle. I also prefer the upper mount a little higher on the shoulder strap. I carry my lower Gun Bearer attached to the two lower forward molle loops on the belt of my Kifaru packs. Once dialed in they work better than any other carry I have found.

    I've always found it curious how actual "shooting slings" seem to never enter the conversation; just pure "carry slings"? I also find it curious that when I see people practice with their hunting rifles, they never get off the bench/supported rest to practice any of the three common field positions such as standing, sitting/kneeling, nor prone with out a rest, but just the use of a "shooting" sling.
    The hasty sling method (wrapping one's support arm with the "carry" sling) is better than nothing, but pales in comparison to an actual "shooting" sling when shooting field positions with out an artificial support to rest the rifle on.
    This proper use of an actual "shooting" sling used to be part of the fundamentals of marksmanship decades ago, but now it appears to be a lost skill among American rifleman?
    The other thing I've noticed over the decades of shooting is that people no longer understand the difference in the purpose and use between the "military" prone and the Olympic "roll over" prone and fail to use the proper one, which is typically dictated by the location of either the sling swivel or a hand stop.
    It's a sad thing to see what was once common knowledge/skill in the use of a rifle in the field become forgotten, like a mass amnesia; it could be because the knowledge isn't being handed down, and /or people don't read books anymore, I don't know.

      I honestly didn't even know there were dedicated shooting slings. I've just always wrapped my support arm in the carry sling like you mentioned. It's not great, but does provide a little better support than pure off-hand. Glad you mentioned it though as I plan to look into them now

      Oldhogleg, I couldn't have said it better myself. Learning how to use a shooting sling greatly enhances confidence in the field. I took my 2020 pronghorn at 261 yards (lasered) with nothing more than my .30-06 and a sling designed for shooting, while seated. It really helped that I practiced with the sling on a bolt-action .22LR on very small targets at 25-35 yards.

    I have definitely used the included gun boot that came with my pack and a piece of 550 cord to do something similar to the slik sling and the gun bearer. Kinda surprised when you guys were talking using a haste sling for stabilizeing your rifle standing no one brought up having a basic nylon sling configured as a loop sling. Loop slings work great to tighten up shots from any position or with the aid of a mono pole/bipod/tripod. For those shotgun and lever action shooters a scabbard is probably the best choice imo. Bolt guns tend to be a bit long for it I find, but I also dont have long arms.

    I hate regular slings, I always had a problem with them sliding off my shoulder. I got the kifaru universal gun bearer and it's a much better system. Like you guys mentioned I'm not a huge fan that it tips forward the barrel some. I've also had an issue where the rifle wants to roll sideways some but making sure the cradle is as far back on the waist belt as it can go helps with that. It can also get a little annoying when using trekking poles that the gun straddles your armpit and you sort of have to hug the gun as you walk. I'd really like to try out that slik sling, especially for $20 it's worth a try!

    About keeping a rifle in a pack, or slung for that matter, and not having it potentially pointing at yourself or others and having an unintentional discharge: why would you keep a round in the chamber when it's not in your hands?

    • @TonyYarusso
      @TonyYarusso 2 роки тому

      It depends on how and where you hunt. Cycling the bolt to load a round is LOUD, so if you’re close enough for the animal to hear that, that’s a problem. If you expect to be 200 yards away, yeah, carrying empty would make a ton of sense, but at 40 yards not so much.

    I am just getting into multi-day hunting and am looking at the Slik Sling. I am also trying to get the most use I can out of the Osprey backpack that I already own. Once it's worn out, I plan to make the investment in a hunting pack. In the meantime, I am curious if anyone has experience in making this sling work on a non-hunting specific pack, such as an Osprey? (Or for that matter, are there any quick-release rifle pack slings compatible with an Osprey pack that anyone is aware of?)

    • @RMM--uv7uk
      @RMM--uv7uk Рік тому

      The slick will work on any pack that has A decent Hip Belt. With some stiffness to it. So it won't sag when the Rifle is in the upright position.
      Then you also have to vertical nylon strap or Molly webbing coming down your shoulder strap. So the retaining clip has a home.
      I was able to make 2 of them work on pretty basic Cabelas Day packs. And another work flawlessly on an Exo K3 Frame pack.
      It all depends on shoulder straps and your Hip belt.

    This might be a dumb question, but here goes:
    Why not just remove the bolt when you're doing a rifle demonstration indoors? Most bolts pop out with a quick click. You can set the bolt on a clean cloth on the table and everyone who knows anything about the function of a firearm can see as far away as that piece of orange plastic in the muzzle that the rifle's been rendered inoperable. Every time I see a demonstration like this, people have to stop mid-conversation and go over safety fundamentals like it's the first time. If the bolt's out, conversation is done. Right or wrong?
