You can also Step inside the enemy knee and completely deaden the kick, us your forward step and hip rotation for a strong compact body hook. Taekwondo frequently uses this technique, if you are stepping in anyway you might as well try to get inside his knee to destroy the leverage. if you mix it with a little peekaboo you could then bob down towards the kick after your punch impact. since you broke momentum on that side you may even be able to check hook out to the same side the kick came from.
I've been really thinking about this recently as I don't have the years of tough shin conditioning that the Thai's have to check leg kicks with their shins. Thanks Mike, you just confirmed what I was thinking.

My preference is pulling the leg back, not all the way into a different stance because that exposes the inside of your leg but pull your front leg straight back and keep your lead shoulder forward. Most dopes will spin through and you can catch them with punches as they turn back around (much harder since they can't see it) or you can blast them in the back with a kick and really do some damage. Pull the leg straight back, keep you shoulder forward, and you can spring off the ball of that retracted lead foot for a lot of power in either the kick or the punch. Evasion is the highest level of defense, evasion plus counter is next level.
Checking into the kick is great for closing distance to grapple/clinch. If you can drop levels you might get a good ankle pick (without risking that hard knee).

Thank you for this breakdown, makes a lot more sense now. The only questionable aspects, IMO are would leaning into the kicks make more sense than checking against an opponent who uses leg kicks effectively(Barboza, young Aldo)? Also, when in competition, would the judges be able to determine this as a type of check vs. a leg raise check? It could mean the difference in a close split decision. Thanks again for the video, you have some great stuff!
I found out about this when we drilled 1.2.3 legkick kombo. My teacher said we should check it but everytime i checked i got off balaence(im a skinny guy). But as soon as i began a put my wight into it insted of checking it i was qick to caunter.
You know what i'd really like to see? "How would you fight an amateur boxer if you were a muay thai guy/wrestler" and vice versa, you know how to take advantage of different fighting style
it's just a karate thing, but most karate schools don't practice low kicks enough/at all. It's the basic zen stance used for sparring. Karate likes a heavy front foot and a very bent front knee.
You're supposed to set them up with punches and the low kicks require more rotation. The check should not be knee forward but more to the outside that way movement is more fluid.
I usually check with the lower knee just below the knee cap or it’s really the top of tibia 🦴 it’s the hardest bone in the body that’s how Anderson Silva broke his shin he got checked w/ upper tibia but I agree step in to the kick the way you would if someone was swinging a stick just step into it so point of impact is Major manipulated so as not to hurt as bad 🤔

"The name is Hurt, Hard2 Hurt"
Erminio Vrandi lol
Dont forget to shout falcon punch right before you through the straight right
@1:28 you could add a nice jab counter to that 😎💪
"Do I wanna kick their legs when they're heavy or when they're light?"
"Yes."
great video but a good check is almost necessary when facing a devastating kicker who has balance and awareness of the oncoming attack
This is a valid leg kick defense in Krav. 100% reality based, when dudes don't want to go shin-bone-to-shin-bone.
0:12 we do that too, idk if its a kyokushin thing but my sensei teaches it!
it's just a karate thing, but most karate schools don't practice low kicks enough/at all. It's the basic zen stance used for sparring. Karate likes a heavy front foot and a very bent front knee.
You're supposed to set them up with punches and the low kicks require more rotation. The check should not be knee forward but more to the outside that way movement is more fluid.
It depends on what works for you. In most cases, your opponent can turn your own tactics against you if you use it as your *Go To*.
C-C-COMBOOO BREAKER !!!!
FALCON PUNCH!!
Alright man you are winning my nerd heart over for sure haha.
I check kicks all the time cuz my shin is soo condition the opponent’s hurts them self like anderson Silva.
I usually check with the lower knee just below the knee cap or it’s really the top of tibia 🦴 it’s the hardest bone in the body that’s how Anderson Silva broke his shin he got checked w/ upper tibia but I agree step in to the kick the way you would if someone was swinging a stick just step into it so point of impact is Major manipulated so as not to hurt as bad 🤔
i really enjoy these video, you inspire me. 😎💯
