20:45 This lag reduction modification was not done by Fizzi. Before Slippi netplay this mod was known as Faster Melee, and it was originally created by TruckJitsu with help from some other Melee modders.
Melee did in fact have netplay and matchmaking prior to Slippi and it's really gratuitous that you act as if it never happened. For one, Dolphin has a built-in delay-based netplay feature for all games, Melee included, but it was not used by serious Melee players because of the noticeable delay Melee has on Dolphin in single player compared to CRT, let alone through netplay. Then came the Faster Melee Dolphin fork (which Slippi is a fork of) which added loads of optimizations (Many of which Slippi utilizes and were mentioned in the video) that made semi-serious Melee able to be played, albeit requiring a very stable connection due to the lack of rollback. What made Slippi save Melee was that if people had to play a version of Melee where you have to find games on various websites like Discord and Anther's ladder, deal with the cumbersome Dolphin Netplay UI, and deal with dropping inputs from playing with anybody that isn't within driving distance from you, Melee would have seen significantly diminished attention due to it simply not being a very enjoyable experience and not even remotely viable for serious competitive matches with money on the line.
Good times! Anther's Ladder was sick! Been playing Melee online since 2016, I remember how hyped I was the first time I tried Faster Melee. And also when Anther added competitive rock/paper/scissors to his website 🤣
For viewers who joined the community after 2014, there were in fact 13 years of mods before Achilles dropped 20XX, and tournament rules were not aligned in any way due to the release of 20XX hack pack or 20XXte.
13:37 Melee has had a way to play online via Dolphin netplay support since about 2014 and was capable of near-console lag delay netcode since 2017, the community was not completely helpless once Covid struck. Most of the gameplay surrounding this was on a website called Anther's Ladder, a fanmade matchmaking system for Dolphin users using a branch called Faster Melee. It was more than playable but it was only parity with console under very low and very stable ping, then that's where Slippi came in. I would say the logistical shock and shift from the literal world economy partially shutting down to the modern Bubonic Plague did much more to damage melee than in-person accessibility.
Really cool video man, I know absolutely nothing about coding but I feel like I was able to follow along very well and even learn and few things, thanks for the awesome content
it's amazing what can be done when a talented software engineer given a few months of lock down. if you're familiar with video game emulators, a lot of game decompilation projects and unofficial PC ports started in 2020 as well and have either completed or slowed down dramatically due to the volunteers having less time to commit if any at all.
amazing video, ngl some of the coding sections had me confused, but I definitely will be rewatching it to slowly digest, thanks for going into soooo much detail I kinda crave it when it comes to disect style videos, thank you!
It makes for a good story but its important to note that while simply, smash 64 is NOT family friendly for a player that knows what they're doing. Combos are true far more often than in later games, including melee. L cancelling is replaced by Z cancelling, which is the same thing except unsteady of halving lag, it erases it. Short hopping also exists in smash64. Melee is definitely a more complicated game in my book. DI is more nuanced and has more tools. Wavedashing obviously exists. Wall techs and therefore esgevteching. Edge canceling. Light and hard shielding as well as ahield angles. The list goes on. But smash 64 is absolutely brutal. Its by far the easiest game to 0-death someone in.
Woooow what a great video! Thank you for going in depth on a lot of things the way you did! I loved learning about some of the challenges these people faced when developing their mods. I've been playing Melee for 10 years now, and it feels like I learn something new about it every day. The fact that Fizzi had to locate all the sounds in the game's memory to manually exclude them from the rollback process absolutely blew my mind hahahah! Thank you for this beautiful documentary :) If I may give you a piece of advice, you need to work on your voice man. I say this lovingly, the content was very nice, but you are too monotone in the way you speak. I had to rewind the video a few times because I skipped a few bits of information as it was hard to follow you. Your voice lacks personality right now. But I'm sure you'll figure it out! I subscribed to your channel, I'm excited for your future videos :)
Could someone help me with dat texture wizard please 🥺? Im trying to import my own recolored texture but it never changes despite my recolored png being the same dimentions. Thanks!
The fact that Melee has better online than Ultimate is insane and makes me very proud. Fizzy truly is a legend
I mean... better than Ultimate is a very low bar
@ you’re not wrong but to think of all the resources Nintendo has and somehow Melee’s is better. It’s pretty cool

sounds like facts to me
I’m just assuming the creator of this video doesn’t know about anthers etc, watching them fail at wavedashes and L cancels informed this
THANK YOU. Finally, someone who has been playing Melee longer than 3 years…
Spitting facts

I love the story behind Slippy and just stumbled upon this video by accident, easy subscribe.
Really inspiring how a game this old still has a dedicated playerbase
there are alot of games like that tho. 3rd Strike, MvC2, ST, +R, UMVC3, KOF98 and 2002.
Really cool video man, I know absolutely nothing about coding but I feel like I was able to follow along very well and even learn and few things, thanks for the awesome content
So no mention at all of Anther's ladder?

you should learn about Anther's ladder btw, to this day its still has a far better ranking system and UI than slippi

i hope matchmaking & rollback get released together for brawl/P+. Some days I'm tired of seeing a constant queue of foxes.
Brawlback can't come soon enough, P+ deserves what Melee got out of Slippi.
best platform fighter for sure
great video
Goated content
I see Tom. I click
Assembly is goated
Nice
melee really is beautiful
Melee is great, attendance is UP but viewership is sadly DOWN
currently i think we have a lack of hype stories going on driving storylines and viewership. ik its a common sentiment but we really did lose them
Peak melee content
Could someone help me with dat texture wizard please 🥺? Im trying to import my own recolored texture but it never changes despite my recolored png being the same dimentions. Thanks!
Chloe Burbank vol 1 lookin
Tom do you play Melee?
Hail Melee
"Look at what we can do!!"
Yes, and look at why you do it. Never stop being the FGC's joke
who hurt you
@@Eikomaniac Deflecting :p
and then he put ranked behind a paywall effectively corralling the entire scene together and butchering it
it's too bad you have to make an account now to even play online against other people. Can't just be anonymous
Its the best PLATFORMER fighting game, correct that please
However its still one of the best fighting games with 3rd strike
bro anthers ladder exists lol
Nah, no GRD. Not the GOAT.
