- A very early and rare video clip taken in 1980 of a car train having left the yard at Gosford Green and heading north towards Three Spires Junction. The location of the shot at Barras Heath is now unrecognisable. The train was about to pass the old Morris Engines plant, one of several automotive factories to be found in Coventry at that time. The line sadly closed the following year in 1981.
Another great find / post John cheers - thanks once again for sharing. I've added this link to our Historic Coventry forum members. Keep 'um coming!
I was employed by BR in Coventry TOPS office at the time,so it brings back memories.
Class 25 real workhorses,we had a loading of over 1500 tonnes to Bescot! It could still be heard passing Tile Hill.
They were replacement by class 31s which couldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding.
How many times have I heard that said, lol 🤣🤣🤣. I was the checker at Dorridge in mid 70s, and helped in the Saltley cutover to TOPS. nice bit of Saturday o/t. 👍👍
Great clip, Wow' that engine was working to the Max. What a sound.
Forget relaxation tapes, play me this anytime. 😊
Glad you enjoyed it
That little sulzer is working flat out, amazing sound..............
Rated at 87t per set fully loaded, max 7 sets per train. I worked on BR at MAT Dorridge in the 70s. Our 08 shunter knew a full load most days. MAT also had a fleet of carflats, converted from ex SR coaching stock. Mostly used for Land Rover/Range Rover loading, or cars is traffic was light. Early summer some carflats were sent to France to bring bach Massey Ferguson hay balers. Unloaded at Dorridge and road transported all over the UK. Happy days 😄😄😄
Great video. Miss the sound of the classic sulzer type engine locomotives.
Working as follows.Gosford Green to Coventry yard with loaded cartics and loaded containers, then a Class 47 to Linwood in Scotland.
Return working Class 47 will cartics loaded with Hillman Imps and empty containers.Local trip next morning back to Gosford Green.2 sets of vehicles in circuit.
Very nice, like !!
The other end of Three Spires I believe connected with Keresley Colliery off the line to Nuneaton.
That's correct. It still runs along what was the Colliery branch to Prologis. Been mothballed for several years though now.
Great footage, I was over a decade too late in getting to Coventry to see this line in use. I did explore some of the disused railway lines in my student days, but (as is often the case) I wish I'd done a lot more.
I think it was the coventry avoiding line between gosford green and three spires junction. It's now the A444
Coventry Loop Line
This was the local trip working from Coventry to three spires junction where it would run round and take the train to Coventry Yard.
The cars are from Linwood, a mix of Sunbeams and Avengers, which was what Scotland built after 1976.
AWESOME
Thank you! Cheers!
Not quite sure that is 100% correct, as the train used to come down from Scotland fully loaded with cars...Hillman Imps, and were all unloaded at Gosford Green Goods yard on the Binley Road. By first job on leaving school was working for British Rail and based at the Gosford Green depot, around 1961/62 ish.
A well loaded Car Train for that 25. Where does this line run too, from?.
It's the Cov avoiding line.
It's now the A444.
Oops from Gosford green to Three Spires Jct,l think it is actually not on the Gosford branch but en route on the main Nuneaton line en route to Three Spires.
