- Wanted to challenge myself and try to cover 'Being For The Benefit of Mr. Kite' from the Sgt. Peppers album. I love recreating these complex, psychedelic tracks, and learning about how it was made back in 1967.
This project took quite a while to record, mix, film and edit, so a quick subscribe or comment would be much appreciated :)
Everything you hear in this video (apart from drums) was recorded by me.
Recording:
The backing track for this song consisted of John's scratch vocal, Paul's Rick bass, Ringo on drums, George on Tambourine, and George Martin playing the harmonium. Take 7 was then deemed best and submixed for more overdubs.
Upon John's request of 'smelling the circus sawdust', George Martin collected several recordings of calliope music, cut up the tape into pieces, and threw them into the air. It turned out that they landed in almost the same order, so a few adjustments were made, and they were spliced together in random order and direction.
Next was filling in the intro and verse breaks with John and Georges' chord and bass harmonicas, and George Martin's 'vibraphone' mellotron.
Perhaps the most impressive overdub is the half speed recording during the 6/8 bridge. It consists of two organs, three harmonicas, electric guitar and a tambourine all at the same time. Sped up, and combined with the calliope tape, it sounds mesmeric. In particular, the chromatic organ runs played by George Martin provide a swirling wash of sound.
Remaining overdubs include two more organs in normal speed, a piano, and a glockenspiel sped up and reversed in some parts.

I spent a lot of time not appreciating this song. Then Paul said this is his best song to perform live because of the bass line, went back and listened to it again while focusing on bass, and it truly is a wondrous melody. And then focused on everything else and like, wow. Incredible sounds, amazing work by everyone. I was just a bit put off by the lyrics being basically copied from a poster, you know? But in a purely melodic sense this song is GORGEOUS.
Always remember heard George Martin use the words " Tutti frutti " to describes section of the song ...

As a non-drummer, I've always been curious about the drums. But this 'full instrumental reproduction' has no drums.
