I'd be tempted to try making my own buffers and shafts out of styrene to see how hard it would be. I usually replace cookie cutter and plastic wheels with Dapol matal replacements wherever possible. I buy bags of them every now and again when I can find them not too expensive. As for the smaller details, it's down to how far you want to go, how much time you want to spend on them. I have occasionally highlighted things like door handles with a fine gold coloured paint pen rather than going to the trouble of cutting them off and installing metal replacements. As I said, it's dependent on how much work you feel like putting in. I find too much tiny detail sometimes just means more to knock off/break, and of course as @charlie1872 says, the 3ft rule is always worth keeping in mind...

Thanks mate, good comments. Like the highlight idea as mouldings are pretty good. Shafts, agreed but may glue on suitable buffers from stock I have.

By removing appurtances would it affect how the wagon looks?
The 3’-0 view comes into play here, no point in creating work and possible damage if it doesn’t improve the view.
You can add handles and rails etc that will improve how it looks but bear in mind when you lift them on and off the track tiny things tend to break .
I have five or six blue Lima wagons, I will have a look.
    Good luck
