    Good stuff, I just finished install of same on my '69 Fairlane Cobra with 428(NO the '69 are NOT Torinos)... Luckily I'd saved most of the parts from a parked in 1976 50K mile '68 Torino GT with a 390... Rebuilt, or resealed it all including the valve & cylinder... I'd added the P/S sector in early '90s, for better ratio but now long tired of additional effort... If dealer added P/S for customer, the slow ratio box was not replaced... I've reset toe since install, but caster & camber are still at original, will rebuild all the suspension before I worry about correct alignment, drives fairly good as is... I knew additional positive caster was recommended just not how much, thank you for specs and the various tips, much appreciated...
    As far as the steel wrap on hoses, it's to protect from chafing(dragging on chassis) when steering sweeps to/from the extremes... I was able remove the coils from a set of 351 hoses to install on mine...

      From Jeff: Yep, FAIRLANE Cobra! One of my favorite cars. Rick Schmidt of National Parts Depot had a hardtop Cobra, Enjoyed that thing.

      Production of HTs was approx a third the amount of fastbacks... I was looking for one of those but then found my fastback in excellent condition, so history was made... Original owner wasn't a car guy, just bought it because he liked it, traded it in on a new pickup almost as soon as paid off...

    I’m putting mine back together on a 63 galaxie, on the hoses going from cylinder pump to the control valve. Does it matter about the hose connection? Straight or crossed and I have seen where some folks using atf fluid does that matter, thanks

    Hi Jeff, I live in Australia and own a 1978 XC Falcon (they run a Bendix-Bishop p/s box not ram setup, 1971 was the last year the ram setup was used). With the power steering to make it feel right the key is definitely in the wheel alignment. I run maximum positive castor on my car along with the front bolt on the upper control arms spaced out. The steering on my car is no way light and floating and actually nicely weighted feels very similar to a modern rack and pinion setup. That also thanks to the 235/ 40/18 inch front tyres and urethane bushes all round.
    With the Cleveland setup, in Australia it also extremely difficult to find a Cleveland with a/c and no power steering (personally never seen one). It is possible however as in the ford falcon part catalog it shows a pic of the pulley setup. Basically they used a power steering mounting bracket with a pulley. I can send you a pic of it if you like.

    Thanks Jeff your really good at details & helpful . I'm bumping into a problem with my p/s brackets for my 69 351w... I bought a n.o.s. brackets & the block 1 doesn't fit & I'm seeing yours is different?

      There are a lot of nuances in the brackets. 351 can be a little odd. emails me some pics. jford@autorestomod.com

    What about using an after market electric cooling fan & use that pully for the power steering? It's not factory but it would work well as well as make the car easier to live with!

    Love your videos they are very detailed and well done loaded with good information. Do you have any information for the proper frame mounting location for the ram frame mounting bracket? I have a 63 Comet that has been converted from a 6 to an 8 cyl and upgraded from 4 lug to 5 lug.

    Just a quick correction for the site posted in the vid. The link is stangerssite.com. You left out an "S" in the spelling on the banner. No affiliation with them, just used them for reference for awhile now.
    Great vid as usual Jeff and always look forward to them!

    did you ever do the recomended 7 degree positve caster with.3 negative caber and 1/8th toe ? with the anti dive kit on the fairlane ? How did it do? My 68 Ranchero has the power assist and it is dangerous. Would go with Borgesen box but that means floor shifter and that is just plane wrong with my nice bench seat

    • @AutoRestoMod
      @AutoRestoMod  4 роки тому

      Only did 3 degrees and o camber and 1/16 inch toe.

  • @kimmo48yt
    @kimmo48yt 9 років тому +1

    I suggest that you correct the chart you show containing alignment specs. It shows '3 degrees camber', but it really should be 0.3 degrees, like Jeff says out loud... :D. Still I love these videos, and I'm taking my '69 Torino GT to alignment shop in couple of weeks. Trying to get 7-10 degrees caster for my Borgeson installation.

    • @AutoRestoMod
      @AutoRestoMod  9 років тому

      kimmo48yt Thanks Kimmo We totally missed that in post production. We'll see what we can do to correct that.

    • @AutoRestoMod
      @AutoRestoMod  9 років тому

      kimmo48yt The 3/8-inch shims will give the 7 degrees. Our dial "angle finder" made in Catmandoo was not doing its job when giving us the 10 degree reading.

    • @AutoRestoMod
      @AutoRestoMod  9 років тому

      AutoRestoMod Annnd fixed.

    • @kimmo48yt
      @kimmo48yt 9 років тому

      AutoRestoMod I guess it takes almost 1/2 inch shims. Better check if I have uca bolts long enough!

    • @AutoRestoMod
      @AutoRestoMod  9 років тому

      kimmo48yt Honestly, the 3/8-inch shims will do the trick. Not crazy about going as far as 1/2-inch. Putting a good bit of stress possibly on that upper ball joint. 7 degrees is quite adequate to the task. We'd recommend trying that first. If you need you can even chat with the alignment shop and get an agreement to check it after the change (if you decide to go 1/3-inch. But honestly,we'd stick with the 3/8-inch tried and true.

    I have 65 mustang 4lug want to covert to 5lug I purchased a set of spindles they told me they're off a 67 .how could I id spindles? I have casting # 107F-C60A @ 108 -C60A

    • @AutoRestoMod
      @AutoRestoMod  9 років тому

      Robert Sanchez Those are 1967 Mustang (and 1966/67 Fairlane) spindles. Despite what a lot of people say there is a difference in the ;65-'66 Mustang spindle and the later ones. The correct part number for '65 '66 would be C5DA or C4ZA. The cars were designed with a specific geometry and these part numbers are correct. The differences are slight and you might not even notice, but they are there. Check this video out where we show the difference between the one you have and the original: ua-cam.com/video/8ZWlrGnD9V4/v-deo.html The section on spindles starts at 2:10.

    • @AutoRestoMod
      @AutoRestoMod  5 років тому +1

      No. But the biggest concern would be the power box. The supply of good boxes has gotten pretty thin. I would look at www.fordification.com to see if there is a post in the tech section about the conversion. That site is a wealth of help if you are working on a bumpside.

    This is the only way to power the 68-74 Econolines, I have one, no power, it's a bear to drive, being a paraplegic, I use hand controls for gas/brake with my left hand, my right is on a spinner knob on the steering wheel, thank god for my upper body strength. I would love power steering, but that setup is just too much trouble, it routes through the engine cradle by the oil pan, pretty tight there, the parts are hard to find too.

    • @AutoRestoMod
      @AutoRestoMod  9 років тому

      Maples01 True, you might contact the folks at Borgeson and discuss the situation. They are good folks and might be able to help.

    • @Maples01
      @Maples01 9 років тому

      There was a company called Quadratec turning them into 4x4's in the 70's, they had to change steering geometry, to get it forward of the axle, it is possible to do so on the 2wd, swapping the steering arms around and using the later 70's Y steering tie-rods, and a late model power steering box, have to get a steel plate bolted to the frame to mount it. I have seen diagrams and photos for a how to, I just don't have people to help do it, it's not something I can tackle on my own.

    • @AutoRestoMod
      @AutoRestoMod  9 років тому

      Maples01 We don't have any links for companes tat can do this. Best bet would be to find a traditional rod shop in your area and show them what needs to be done. That would be our course of action. Rod shops and restoration places will be more likely to (but not always) to "get" what you are trying to do.
