  • The Crew of the Starship Voyager are perhaps some of the most famous individuals in Starfleet. Surviving and making the journey home through the Delta Quadrant certainly made some people legends. However, most of the USS Voyager’s senior staff, or rather the bridge crew, were not actually the original crew of the ship. But who were they?
    In this Star Trek Explained video, we take a look at the ORIGINAL Crew of the USS Voyager. I’m talking about those people who filled positions of Chief Engineer and First Officer, before the initial journey to the Delta Quadrant killed them.

      Well there was a Vulcan woman in “Repression” too, who seemingly came out of nowhere as she wasn’t mentioned in “Counterpoint” or as you say, in “Blood Fever”. Tuvok did mention other Vulcans (suggesting at least two others besides himself) in “Flashback” though.

    I think it's funny how most of the crew is never even seen on the show. There's only a handful of people that get shown as background. Maybe 24 out of something like 180 people are the show. And the main 7 or 8 are all you ever really see.

    • @vic5015

      Same of true of the Enterprise-D. Out of the roughly 1000 member crew plus civimians how many did we really see over 7 years of TNG?

      @MatthewSalzer Місяць тому +2

      @@vic5015 The thing about the Enterprise D is that they were in the Alpha Quadrant so people were probably transferring in and out all the time. Of course, you are correct in that 1000 crew members means that the same crew could've been there the entire run and we probably didn't see a quarter of them.

    • @MatthewSalzer
      @MatthewSalzer Місяць тому +1

      If you really think about it, because background actors are constantly changing, over the course of all the episodes, we probably did see the entire crew of voyager that survived and merged from the Maquis crew. Obviously, the only members of the original crew we saw were the people we saw on screen.

    I think Janeway would have been a more interesting character if she’d started out as XO and Cavitt had been captain. Janeway has to take command when they reach the Delta Quadrant and we watch her grow into the role.

    • @TheAtkey
      @TheAtkey Місяць тому +6

      It wouild have made the character dynamic between her and Chakotay more interesting if they were the same rank in episode 1(Chakotay's rank before he left Starfleet I mean) perhaps Chakotay may have had a more experienced career like he was the first officer on a Galaxy class starship before he joined the Maquis making him a threat to Janeway in the early episodes of command being taken from her.

    • @andrewlowe693
      @andrewlowe693 Місяць тому

      Like it!, maybe with a little added tension if it was instead Cavitt's idea to recruit Paris and Janeway didn't really like Tom because of her history/loyalty with Adm Paris and watching that redemption arc over the show as it was less visibly and almost forgotten between Paris/Chakotay

  • @robertallen6701
    @robertallen6701 Місяць тому +9

    Honestly, Cavot and the doctor seemed kind of one dimensional. It's like they were only there to show how much everyone hates Tom. Nothing about them really comes across as likeable on screen.
    Granted, it is kinda hard (and probably pointless) to spend much time developing characters who will die in the first act of the pilot episode.

  • @zephyr8072
    @zephyr8072 Місяць тому +6

    It was always amusing to me how quickly they forgot that the Caretaker flat out murdered a bunch of the crew when he yanked the ship.
    And Janeway thought the best way to deal with this kidnapping, murdering, _rapist_ (don't forget that part) scumbag was to... honour his wishes.
    Yeah I can see why Janeway became the scourge of the Delta Quadrant.

    • @KamenRiderGumo
      @KamenRiderGumo 29 днів тому +3

      It wasn't so much that she wanted to honor his wishes as she didn't think she could live with herself if she sacrificed the entire population of Ocampa (such as it was) to get the ship home. Plus, if the array had fallen into Kazon hands, they would have eventually been able to use it to wreak havoc in the Delta Quadrant and beyond. (I say eventually because we know they'd have spent a few years killing each other over it, then once a sect had firmly seized control, their incompetence would have killed about half of them before they figured out how it worked.)

    In the two-part novel called "The Badlands", the portion featuring Voyager on its way to find the Val Jean, had them come across Gul Evek's damaged Cardassian cruiser. They rescued his crew and provided medical aid, but knowing the repercussions he would face from Central Command, Gul Evek committed ritual suicide on Voyager. In that segment, Voyager's doctor was named Dr. Bist, not Fitzgerald.

      @marvelboy74 28 днів тому

      I've had this debate before about whether Voyager had a chief science officer. I say there had to be one that died and Janeway didn't have any that she felt had enough experience to appoint to the role. Samantha Wildman and the Delaney twins were all ensigns in the Science division. Samantha even went on an away mission once where she almost died. Seven seemed to fill the role of science officer later on though.

  • @KEVMAN7987
    @KEVMAN7987 Місяць тому +1

    I've always wondered why Janeway picked her original command crew and exactly who they were. Basically, only Tuvok & Harry survived.
    I'm still confused about how Voyager lost the entire medical staff. Surely, there was more than the doctor and a couple of nurses.

    • @hippusmaximus9319
      @hippusmaximus9319 Місяць тому +2

      The size of Voyager's crew ranged around 150 people. The ship was supposed to be a shorter range science vessel with a shorter mission length. I assume that's why an EMH was installed on Voyager as a short term medical supplement. I assume this is why poor Harry Kim was forever stuck as an ensign on Voyager, there is just nowhere to get promoted.

    • @Adam_Boots
      @Adam_Boots 29 днів тому +3

      Standard protocol is placing the bodies in torpedo casings and firing them into space. We know that Lyndsay Ballards remains were found floating in space.
      It's the Sci-Fi equivalent of burial at sea. I believe they also tend to aim for their home world so that symbolically the remains are taking their final journey back home.

    Was interesting as i recall the original members who were lost were in no way expanded upon, so i think you done more with this video than cannon did with these characters.
    One video that may be good to do is a list of alternate versions of the ships, stations etc... Like briefly mentioned an alternate timeline with an alternate Voyager that had its original crew.
    I explored this with a short "Legacy" episode i wrote. Summery is, Seven and the Enterprise G crew get a distress call, only to find its a battered Seven. When they arrive, they find its the USS Titian. Same ship but in that universe never had a name change. Aboard this battered version, Lt Commander Naomi Wildman is Seven's first officer. This Seven proffer's to use her human name over her borg designation. We find that the aggressors in that universe are the Bajoran's. This is because the universe which the Titan originates, although not mentioned in the story but i will mention it here as the author, is they originate from the Universe in Parallel's S7 TNG where a Bajoran ship gets aggressive with the Enterprise D (being YT friendly). I expand on it as the Bajorans of this universe worship the Parwraiths. Titian, Enterprise and a Odyssey Class Enterprise F under the command of Captain Harry Kim, Engage over the course of the story and two battles, 4 Bajoran ships, three are thrown back through the quantum rift and 1 is destroyed. The head of this fleet was Kira Neryse (DS9) who's inhabited by a Par wraith. Naomi takes a liking and makes a similar Paris type pass on Jack because he's a bad boy so to speak. She doesn't like him at first however. He rejects her and tells her he's already taken (Sydney LaForge). The Titan and Enterprise F return to their universe and the Enterprise G collapses the rift. Naomi sends a private message to Jack's station saying something to the effect of that Sydney is lucky to have Jack.
