The Circus (Bray Studios, 1920) by Max Fleischer, with Koko the Clown

- Here is an early entry in Max Fleischer's Out of the Inkwell series. At this time, Max was employed as a director at the Bray Studios, which was producing the Inkwell films for Fleischer. Max's clown character was fully rotoscoped in these early films, and known in trade journals as the "Goldwyn-Bray Clown." While Bray retained ownership of the films Max produced at their studio, Max was able to take his Out of the Inkwell concept and his clown character with him for later ventures, post-Bray. By the mid-1920s, the clown character had been redesigned with help from animator Dick Huemer-and had finally come to be called "Koko."
The print seen here is Bray Studios' own 16mm TV syndication version, prepared in the early 1950s. The film's intertitles were cut out, in favor of new narration.

Cartoons On Film released a lightly restored version of this film several years ago, as part of our first 'Cartoon Roots' Blu-ray/DVD release. That version largely uses a 28mm print in the Stathes Collection, with far better picture quality than Bray's TV syndication print. The 'Cartoon Roots' collection can be purchased through Amazon.
For nearly 20 years, the Cartoons On Film team has been locating and reuniting rare 16mm and 35mm prints of silent era cartoons cartoons. We've also been collecting hi res scans of prints in other collections. Cartoons On Film's long term plan is to release new restorations of all the surviving silent era Fleischer animated films. Who is Max FLEICHER? I think they meant Fleischer. Might have been an error during post production
