Darren Pang was one of the only things keeping me watching during the recent losing streak. Fox Sport Midwest almost didn't bring him back in the offseason because his contract was up or something. Thank god they did.
Panger made me love the game of hockey. He is fun, exciting and kinda goofy which makes for an absolute stellar color guy. Fun to watch whether Blues win or lose.
Loved listening to Doc on local broadcasts from all of his years in NJ. One of the all time greats. Truly a pleasure watch a game and hear Doc call it.
Holy Jumpin' ........ Hard not to love Panger. I like him mostly because even though he's a Blues commentator you very rarely hear him bad mouth the other team.
He's also playfully self-deprecating in every good way. I'm surprised THG didn't add that to the list of good things he had to say about him though he has said it elsewhere regarding Pang.
Thomas Therriault It’s understandable if he didn’t include him. RJ is a pretty big homer. But you can’t include Jack Edwards and not include RJ. Both are in the list, I’m fine with it. Both are excluded from the list, I’m fine with it. Can’t choose one and not the other though.
As someone who's from the new England area, I can't stand jack Edwards. Even if a player from the other team makes a good play or something, he can't give any credit to that team. Also, if a play is dirty and it's against the Bruins, it's always a harsh call, but if it's against the other team, it's always a good call
Tylercbj7 You clearly don’t watch him then. He gives credit to guys all the time who aren’t on the Bruins. I’m being so serious too, he really does. I agree he can be a homer sometimes, but NESN is a New England network where everyone watching is a Bruins fan. So lay off a little, would ya?
Tyler both your reasons are why he is such a great commentator because he has great emotion for the team that you want to express yourself even if it is Biased
It’s amazing how long Bob Cole has been around, I’m in my mid 20’s and I have the same feeling as you described. He was the voice of HNIC and I still get excited when I hear him calling the game
Butch Goring is a great colour guy. Being a Canadian is also critical of the home side and does a great job of balancing his commentary to fit both the experienced hockey fan and a new viewer.
This is a great video. I think I'm gonna rank the 31 regional broadcasting tandems on my hockey channel. I'll make sure to mention your channel. I agree with all of your rankings. Edwards is biased but very funny, and people just don't appreciate Bob Cole for doing a hell of a job calling games in his eighties.
Christian Shrug I stop watching this video immediately after he said that, he is not only the greatest hockey announcer of all the time, but all sports !
Dave Goucher is a phenomenal play-by-play man. I was devastated when he left Boston for Vegas. Im an amateur broadcaster myself, and for hockey I try to model myself after Dave. I was hoping he’d crack your list.
I think the Capitals play-by-play announcer Joe Beninati should have been on the list. For me he has always made the game entertaining to listen no matter what the score is. He also used to do national and playoff games on Verses (former name of NBCSN)
I admire you for doing this video because I feel like everyone gets very defensive about their commentators. But seriously Rick Jennerette is #1 I don't care what you say. Hahaha
Ludwig has come a long way from when they started. Their first run was a preseason game and it was almost unlistenable (radio simulcast). Weird position they ended up in when Ralph left then Strader got sick. The Ralph and Razor combo was top notch.
Being french canadian, watching Pierre Houde being pbp for habs is truly spectacular, he is an icon here in quebec and i thought he should get more love
Musix I agree with that. I'm a Penguins fan, so generally speaking I cheer against the Rangers, but if I'm listening to him it's hard to do. He just makes you feel kind of warm inside.
I have met Ray Ferraro. I went to high school with his son Landon, and they are the nicest people you will ever meet. He didn't come off condescending and he didn't think he was better than everyone else. Very kind, giving and down to earth family. Nothing but great things to say about them.
@@TheHockeyGuy I was wondering what your take is on MARK LEE, who was fired 10 years ago by CBC. He was my favorite to listen to as a Detroiter, as I had access to USA & Canada channels on my own antenna. If you watch the highlights of 2006 edmonton vs detroit when they eliminated us with 65 seconds left in the game, im still shocked by it. But Mark was a personal favorite, and a big loss to NHL. Your opinion????
I absolutely LOVE JK and Panger on our local STL broadcasts, Panger is simply a local treasure here in St Louis - he's probably as well known as guys like Tim McCarver and Joe Buck (baseball guys) and his "holy jumpin", "the old nine o' hearts", "thanks for comin" never get old. I cannot stand Mike Millbury. I agree with everything you said about him - he sounds dull like he couldn't care less about what he's doing. Whenever the Blues are on NBC I just pray it's Doc Emrick, although I don't mind John Forslund or Kenny Albert either. I always in the past would hope for Doc to call our games cause we'd get Olczyk too, but with him having cancer this year we've gotten a lot of Millbury. And NBC can do better than Pierre Mcgwire, but I'd rather have him do national games so we can keep Panger. Panger is great on national games but when he's doing Blues telecasts, HOLY JUMPIN he's the most colorful person interview he world.
Yeah, John Forslund not making the list seems off. Differing opinions, I know. But he is arguably the next in line to take over if/when Doc Emrick decides to hang it up. And he is that next in line potentially for a reason.
John Kelly and Darren Pang on FSMW St. Louis Blues are an absolute treasure. Kelly has the knowledge and perfect play-by-play hockey voice that a hockey fan just loves to listen to, and Panger just makes hockey as hockey can be, can’t wait to hear what he says next. Like peanut butter & jelly - Both are great by themselves, but together you’ve got awesomeness.
Just coming across this video now and I agree with you about Edwards. He has a ton of natural talent as an announcer. But as a play-by-play guy, even for a local team, you can't be that big of a homer and be taken seriously. I've learned that the hard way when I was in school and early on in my career as a broadcaster. A color guy can get away with some bias, a play-by-play guy cannot.
A guy who used to do the radio broadcasts of the Binghamton Whalers when I was a kid was Roger Neale. I LOVED him doing Whalers games. My all-time favorite.
I had the great fortune to be a stage manager in Washington, D.C in the late 80's and 90's and got to work with many hockey play by play and color announcers. My favorite of all time, as a person and as an announcer, is your #1 pick - Mike "Doc" Emrick. He is a genuinely nice guy and loves stadium popcorn. Others I (and the crews) loved to work with were Gary Thorne, Eddie Olczyk, Sam Rosen, John Davidson, and Darryl Reaugh. All, top notch people.
For me Shannon growing up outside of Philadelphia especially in the early to mid 70s the only announcer for me was Gene Hart and I am not even a Flyers fan. He taught everyone in this area how to Love Hockey. His closing remark after every broadcast was, "Good night and Good Hockey". He died in 1999 and I still miss him. He was a homer but he very much appreciated greatness from other teams especially Boston, the Islanders and the Canadiens.
Jack Michaels and Louis Debrusk started together last year and they were awesome, and even better together. They work so well together. Michaels was already famous here in Edmonton for him calling Oilers games on the radio and now that he's on TV he's even better. His one weakness is he can get sidetracked, which is why he's not great on radio but he's so enjoyable on TV.
Holy Jumpin!!! Agree with comments about Darren Pang. He is an absolute delight especially with Joe Vitale on the Blues pre-game shows. Also does a fantastic job with John Kelley on the play by play I love to listen to Kelley's voice which reminds me of his father, the great Dan Kelley who greatly influenced my love for the Blues since the late 60s
Jack Grogan And Jeremy Roenick is awful as well. They guy can't put two sentences together to save his life. NBCSN needs to clean house with their studio guys. Eddie O is fine, but most of the others are annoying imo.
Oh Shannon, I loved your comment about Bob Cole. It struck a bell with me and I agree totally. BUT I wish I could steal your words and insert the name Danny Gallivan. He was the voice of my youth. He was the hockey voice to me.The voice that still suddenly pops into my head while watching a game. When they run old clips to highlight some past series and I hear his voice it gives me chills. Sadly, here in Canada we don’t get to hear many of the other voices from the States because they simply are not heard.
Edwards & Brickley are amazing to watch. People always get so mad at how biased they are, but they work for NESN. A LOCAL NETWORK FOR NEW ENGLAND SPORTS FANS!!!
So do most of the people on this list. But NONE of them are as condicending against the other team as Edwards. If he"s on the broadcast, I turn the volume off.
Gary Thorne is my favorite. I was happy to see him come back for a few Kings games last year. When I was really little he’s all I remember about hockey, and I love his calls
Edwards is very funny. Heard him make a mistake or say something wrong and he says "any aspiring announcers send your applications to nesn" or something like that.
I really miss Gary Thorne, Dave Strader, and Bob Miller (voices of my childhood), but John Forslund and Randy Hahn are fantastic. I also consider Kenny Albert and Matt McConnell to be severely underrated.
Gary Thorne is the GOAT. So many legendary calls, and he made every playoff game entertaining, even if I didn't care at all who was playing. "Raymond Bourque! A dream has come true!" "Off the floor! On the board! Paul Kariya!" are just a couple examples of calls that gave me chills (and some tears). Bill Clemente also extremely good in the booth. Miss these guys
It's probably hard for Doc to replicate the same excitement of a live broadcast for a video game when he's either in a sound booth or in front of a green screen.
How could you not have Joe B & Locker on the list? You monster. They're by far and away the best duo in the league. Unmatched in level of banter, energy, creativity and comfyness.
SteelCityFilms, good call on Dave Strader. years after he left Detroit and Ken Daniels was in place I still found myself referring to Mickey and Dave on Wings broadcasts.
I miss Gary Thorne...wish he'd do hockey again.
Me too. Thorne & Clement were a good team.
He did a couple Kings games last year
I get to watch him announce my os now
YES! Like "The Stars are shining in the heart Texas" and "Off the floor, on the board! PAUL KARIYA!!!
FED A TAN KO!!
Darren Pang was one of the only things keeping me watching during the recent losing streak. Fox Sport Midwest almost didn't bring him back in the offseason because his contract was up or something. Thank god they did.
eiminator This aged extremely poorly
Gary Thorne is my all time favorite and no one else is close.
Gary Thorne and Bill Clement were great back in the day. Should've gave them an honorable mention.
Agree. I'm 26 and some of my earliest memories of hockey were of were of those two doing games on ESPN.
THP Island And Bill still does the flyers games
@THP Island gary thorne was amazing. he should have still been calling games after the 2005 lockout!!

He's also playfully self-deprecating in every good way. I'm surprised THG didn't add that to the list of good things he had to say about him though he has said it elsewhere regarding Pang.
Howie Meeker used "Holy Jumpin'" first.
John Forsland? He’s funny. He’s iconic, as in everyone knows who he is. He’s a great guy, and has covered a bad franchise for 20+ years.
Love Gary Thorne, and the late great Dave Strader. Still miss the 1990's ESPN theme and broadcasts.
John Forslund should at least be an honorable mention I think. And Jim Fox is a great analyst on Kings broadcasts.
Disagree on Jim Fox but TOTALLY AGREE on John Forslund.
Mickey Redmond is one of my favorite human beings of all time
Supreme Plug mine too I was happy thg thought so too
Mickey Redmond is awesome as an announcer and as a person
I cringe when the Redwings play on NBC. We are spoiled on Fox sports Detroit.
Larry Murphy with the dollar dog report!
Mic is so cool in person I was shocked when I met him because I didn't think my opinion of him could get higher but boy did it .
Lucky to grow up in Montreal.. The Danny Gallivan / Dick Irvin combo was incredible.
No John Forslund at all? He has emotion (for both teams), he calls the game very well, Canes often lose and game is still fun to watch.
MrTheChemical HEY HEY WHAT DO YOU SAY?
A lot of these team announcers make hockey sound great, be it the television or radio, it’s just wonderful.
Rick Jeannerette case closed
J C - When Shannon said no Jeannerette, I was done.
J C hands down!!

Tyler do you even watch the Bruins?
Not really, so I understand if my view is harsh. It’s just what I notice, the few times a year I do turn on nesn
Tyler both your reasons are why he is such a great commentator because he has great emotion for the team that you want to express yourself even if it is Biased
If they didn't wave pompoms in the booth in Boston, they'd probably be fired.

A list without Jeanneret is a faulty list.
Christian Shrug I stop watching this video immediately after he said that, he is not only the greatest hockey announcer of all the time, but all sports !
Not faulty, it ceases to even be a list if R.J. isn't on it (at #1).
I'm a habs fan, but jeanerette is no. 1 by a country mile.
Its an opinion list, ya morons.
Jack Edwards is such a dweeb
I agree 100%
Edwards is a nerd
i am a leaf fan but i will take jack edwards over paul romanuk
I like Romanuk, but I don't watch the Leafs that often, so he might get annoying if u watch many games.
Johan Ericsson he makes me want to blow my brains out so anti leaf same with hughson and simpson. the best is the tsn guys and bob cole
I announced a hockey game for my high school a few years back, it's utter chaos.
Dave Goucher is a phenomenal play-by-play man. I was devastated when he left Boston for Vegas. Im an amateur broadcaster myself, and for hockey I try to model myself after Dave. I was hoping he’d crack your list.

agreed. Craig Laughlin is great but his voice is a little annoying but I still love them as a duo. Theyve been with the CAPS forever
I'll forever get chill bumps when i hear Joe B say "Ovechkin, fires he scoressssss!
Mike Lange will forever be Pens Hockey to me.
First Last he should be in the hall of fame
He IS in the HoF.
Shave my face with a rusty razor LOL. He's pretty fun. As much as I cant stand the Pens, he's always fun to hear his old calls
I admire you for doing this video because I feel like everyone gets very defensive about their commentators.
But seriously Rick Jennerette is #1 I don't care what you say. Hahaha
Two years later, as a longtime Blues fan and year-long subscriber, I LOVE how good Panger and John Kelly are together! Panger is AMAZING
Also, cabin fever is setting in from coronavirus "social distancing", so I'm a little more excited than usual lol
Ludwig has come a long way from when they started. Their first run was a preseason game and it was almost unlistenable (radio simulcast). Weird position they ended up in when Ralph left then Strader got sick. The Ralph and Razor combo was top notch.
Bob Cole and Harry Neil are my favourite. When I watch Leaf games it was Joe and Harry. I miss Joe as the Leafs PBP guy.
Being french canadian, watching Pierre Houde being pbp for habs is truly spectacular, he is an icon here in quebec and i thought he should get more love
Sam Rosen does an amazing job, hard to believe it’s been 30+ years.
Musix I agree with that. I'm a Penguins fan, so generally speaking I cheer against the Rangers, but if I'm listening to him it's hard to do. He just makes you feel kind of warm inside.
Its a POWER PLAY goal!!!!!
Not anymore.
But he used to be great
Ken Daneyko is awesome! He gets so pumped up after a goal/hit/fight.
I love Joe Beninati and Craig Laughlin as a team for CAPS broadcasts.
I have met Ray Ferraro. I went to high school with his son Landon, and they are the nicest people you will ever meet. He didn't come off condescending and he didn't think he was better than everyone else. Very kind, giving and down to earth family. Nothing but great things to say about them.
I see a lot of negativity thrown at Ray Ferraro and I have never understood it. He would be a fun guy to talk hockey with.

Gord Miller, John Forslund, and Jack Edwards are my top 3 play-by-play announcers.
Bob Coles late calls are priceless... “and a Goal!” 5 seconds after it went in...
I totally agree with Darren Pang as 1. I am a STL fan and love listening to him.
Steve Mears and Bob Errey are also a great combo for the Pittsburgh games on AT&T Sportsnet

Joe B for Washington caps. PBP
There is a severe lack of Gary Thorne here.
Gary Thorne and Bill Clement
and best radio voice for hockey I ever listened to was in the 1970s Boston Bruins Bob Wilson.
A guy who used to do the radio broadcasts of the Binghamton Whalers when I was a kid was Roger Neale. I LOVED him doing Whalers games. My all-time favorite.
Where's Rick Jeanneret? Literally HOW is he not on this list at all?
CircleTheWagons he’s hiding in the breadbox... where mommy stores the cookies!
John Forslundand Tripp Tracy (yes he’s silly, but he is one hell of an analyst)
Kenny Alberts is the most underrated PBP guy in the league
Agree with you, he is my favorite besides Doc.

The Blues fan inside me feels very nicely after watching this, making me appreciate my guys more
Joe Beninati, and Craig Laughlin for the Caps should have been on your list!!!!!
Agreed
I'm glad that Dennis Beayk is in your list, coming from Jets fan :)
#1 should be George Costanza, you know how he makes those interesting comments in the games
For me Shannon growing up outside of Philadelphia especially in the early to mid 70s the only announcer for me was Gene Hart and I am not even a Flyers fan. Gary thorne in the 90s and early 2000s was a brilliant commentator, especially when he was calling playoff games between the wings and avalanche.
Mickey Redmond is a national treasure!
Mickey is at his best when he is down on the ice. Love his commentary we are spoiled in Detroit “Fox Sports”
Where in the love of God is Sam Rosen?!30+ years as the voice of the New York Rangers shouting its a POWER PLAY GOAL!
Agree with your no 1 in both categories, Pang is one of the reasons I watch St. Louis games even tho they have been hot garb lately.
Holy Jumpin!!! Agree with comments about Darren Pang. He is an absolute delight especially with Joe Vitale on the Blues pre-game shows. Also does a fantastic job with John Kelley on the play by play I love to listen to Kelley's voice which reminds me of his father, the great Dan Kelley who greatly influenced my love for the Blues since the late 60s
the play by play announcer for the canadiens in french has been doing it for decades and hes ones of the best
My favourites are Pierre Houde, Richard Garneau, and René Lecavalier.
Agree on the US broadcasts. Millbury is awful, total curmudgeon. Pierre weirds everyone out. Doc is the only saving grace.
Jack Grogan And Jeremy Roenick is awful as well. They guy can't put two sentences together to save his life. NBCSN needs to clean house with their studio guys. Eddie O is fine, but most of the others are annoying imo.
Rick Jenneratte ?? (this is coming from a Sabres fan but seriously!) 🤔
Oh Shannon, I loved your comment about Bob Cole. It struck a bell with me and I agree totally. BUT I wish I could steal your words and insert the name Danny Gallivan. He was the voice of my youth. Sadly, here in Canada we don’t get to hear many of the other voices from the States because they simply are not heard.
Doc Emrick is a legend
agree
I really enjoy John Forslund. He just has such a deep soothing voice in my opinion.
Gary Thorne has to be 11 he was fantastic! He still is even though he’s only doing baseball now I like him as both a hockey and baseball announcer.
It’s interesting, I personally think Gary Thorne as the Orioles announcer is very mediocre. But he’s arguably my favorite hockey announcer ever.
Honestly I think he’s better as a baseball announcer than a hockey announcer.
Randy Hahn tho. Always a legend with the sharks
Emrick’s memory of hockey is insane. He can remember goal celebrations from a Ft. Wayne Comet player from the early 70s.

Love the love for the STL crew. We love Panger and have loved the Kelly's for two generations!
Gary Thorne??
Bdots44 he’s retired. Surely if he still had his gig he’d be on it
if you get the chance watch the san jose sharks intermission and post game feed. The guy with the giant beard is hilarious
Rick Jeanneret belongs top shelf...where momma hides the 🍪’s
My favorite play by play announcer is john forslund and for color commentary i like ed olczyk
Bob Miller
Clorox Bleach I miss Bob :( too bad he retired, the new Kings PxP just isn't the same.
I like the new Kings PxP but obviously don't expect him to replace what Bob's done for the last half century or so. :P
I like the new guy as well I'll miss Bob his the voice of the kings
jasonfire34 he was definitely a legend. I do like their new play by play guy a lot though.
Im so happy you put Mickey on here. He's honestly one of the cornerstones of the wings at this point.
Obviously Mike Milbury.
/s
Gary Thorne is the GOAT. So many legendary calls, and he made every playoff game entertaining, even if I didn't care at all who was playing. "Raymond Bourque! A dream has come true!" "Off the floor! On the board! Paul Kariya!" are just a couple examples of calls that gave me chills (and some tears). Bill Clemente also extremely good in the booth. Miss these guys
Also the guy that always says "innn there"...really entertaining to hear that guy call Edmonton games, even though I can't recall his name atm.
I met Darren Pang on a flight from Winnipeg to Minneapolis after game 1 of the jets vs wild in 2018. Super cool guy, wish he was still with TSN
Doc Emerick announcing drives me crazy whenever rangers play and Emerick announces i listen to the game on the radio
I can't stand Jack Edwards lol
I grew up with Jiggs McDonald and Ed Westfall on Islander broadcasts. Voices of a dynasty in the 1980s.
SteelCityFilms,
good call on Dave Strader.
years after he left Detroit and Ken Daniels was in place
I still found myself referring to Mickey and Dave on Wings broadcasts.
I'm weird but I love John Forslund, Gord Miller and Kenny Albert for some reason.
Craig Simpson might actually be a hologram... can we confirm his existence?
John Forslund
if darren ever leaves i’ll be depressed
Best goal call Steve Cangialosi
For Play By Play, living in the States, Doc is the king as my uncle says, "He Could Make Grass Growing exciting"
So happy Edwards and Brickley made the list
Bob cole is the best
autumnfall1997 lol he pretty bad these days
Steven Stamkos still way better than romanuk
Bob Cole 'was' the best
