  • In the third and final installment of the "Downgrade at Southern Seminary" series, Russell Fuller talks about Jarvis Williams and Matthew Hall's critical theory laced teachings and the effect they have had on some students. He also recounts the story of Dr. Albert Mohler's aggressive support, in a faculty meeting, for Matthew Hall's promotion to the position of provost, despite opposition over critical theory. Fuller also reveals the stipulations of the "separation agreement" and challenges any members of the faculty at Southern Seminary to debate him on the merits of his concerns.

I've received two diplomas from Mohler (MDiv & PhD) and I thought he was a man of integrity but it seems his true colors are being shown. One insight into his character was seen with his flash of anger at the Shepherd's Conference Q&A in refusing to answer Phil Johnson's question. I found his response to be very childish. But also now we hear of a tirade in a faculty meeting toward Dr. Fuller. I've taken 3 semesters of Hebrew with Dr. Fuller and one thing I have always known about him was that he was a truth teller. For Dr. Mohler to lose his cool with him and berate him is completely unacceptable. This kind of anger disqualifies a man from ministry.
I am thankful to see that Mohler is no longer a teaching fellow with Ligonier.

Isn't Ligonier just as liberal as he is turning out to be though? I know Russell Moore has now been exposed as a total wolf in sheep's clothing as well. Herschel Hobbs would turn over in his grave if he could see how liberal this once great institution has become. Even First Baptist OKC where Hobbs pastored for years actually has a WOMAN as "pastor" now. It's unreal! There were once true heroes at SBTS and in the SBC as well that stood for straight up conservative values but that seems to no longer be the case. A.T. Robertson, E.Y. Mullins, John Broadus, and Herschel Hobbs are needed now more than ever. Even Adrian Rogers would be fuming right now.

I'm not a Baptist, but I appreciate you posting this interview. It helps to explain some of what I'm seeing and reading about these days. Dr. Fuller's explanation (at 13:00) of how the extra-biblical teachings of "critical race theory" and "racial reconciliation" and "intersectionality" corrupt the truth of the gospel will be helpful to us as we examine these ideas in our homeschool worldviews classes. We knew there was something "not quite right" going on with these ideas, but this explanation sums up where these theories go off the rails. Thank you.

What’s incredible, the point of tenure is to give professors the freedom to articulate theories and disagreements that the rest of the body of the university are advocating for. It’s important to be able to have freedom of debates and arguments to advance knowledge. These professors have been silenced in the interest of political correctness and identity politics, things that are antithetical to the scripture!! Incredible!!

I think the most troubling is Al Mohler tends to say, “ Christians need to think fast” on whatever Babylonian idea becomes policy. Yet, has Al Mohler ever stuck out his proverbial neck for the cause of the gospel? Has he , like John MacArthur, followed God, and not man?
Critics who do not offer a God honoring path to combat the forces of darkness, are merely critics. Leaders care and love those around them,
enough, they are willing to go to court ( of either the law or public opinion), to strive for an idea, a standard the puts God on the throne and not a half baked idea, that Karl Marx helped cast half the world into darkness. The lack of a wisdom that embraces the rudiments of communism is like lighting the dark path of a coal mine with a flame thrower.

I’d love to get Fuller’s take on the latest interviews from Southern Seminary.
Edit - They seemed very well produced, but when you step back and consider it - it was quite a strange dialogue to have without context and with this background, one can’t help but feel that they were scripted as they tried to address each of the specific objections raised by Fuller without mentioning him. So it seems that they respect Fuller enough to consider the need to produce the videos and hopefully quell any concerns from third parties.
Without knowing more details, it is difficult to know what’s going on - eg is it ignorance, misunderstanding or malice??

The fact of the matter is, the pendulum of liberalism/ conservatism is always swinging. It is impossible to have an entire faculty on the same page at all times. SBTS is still one of the most theologically conservative schools in the world. It is often difficult for Christians to see the biblical definition of truly loving your neighbor vs. the twisted ideology of intersectionality and critical race theory. Also, for an institution to keep growing, you have to find a way to keep students in the seats, this inevitably means hiring some staff that is more liberal minded. The idea behind growth at the seminary has always been progressive, because Dr. Mohler and the trustees want continual "growth". More students, more professors, more influencers, more money. Sometimes I wonder if smaller is better when it comes to biblical education. I don't intend for this post to seem negative. It's just a reflection of what I have seen during my time at Boyce/ SBTS.

Thanks so much for these videos and for your stand Dr Fuller. CRT stands in direct opposition to the gospel of Jesus Christ which breaks down every wall of division between ethnicities. I would propose that Col. 3:10-11; Gal 2:11-14; 3:27-28; Eph. 2:11-19, etc., indicate we are all one “ethnos” in Christ. I preach a gospel that unifies us across all racial lines, a gospel where Christ has “broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility” (Eph 2:14).
    Galatians 3:27-28
    (27) For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. (28) There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
    Galatians 2:11-14
    (11) When Cephas came to Antioch, however, I opposed him to his face, because he stood to be condemned. (12) For before certain men came from James, he used to eat with the Gentiles. But when they arrived, he began to draw back and separate himself, for fear of those in the circumcision group. (13) The other Jews joined him in his hypocrisy, so that by their hypocrisy even Barnabas was led astray. (14) When I saw that they were not walking in line with the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas in front of them all, “If you, who are a Jew, live like a Gentile and not like a Jew, how can you compel the Gentiles to live like Jews?”
    Ephesians 2:11-19
    (11) Therefore remember that formerly you who are Gentiles in the flesh and called uncircumcised by the so-called circumcision (that done in the body by human hands)- (12) remember that at that time you were separate from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of the promise, without hope and without God in the world. (13) But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ. (14) For He Himself is our peace, who has made the two one and has torn down the dividing wall of hostility (15) by abolishing in His flesh the law of commandments and decrees. He did this to create in Himself one new man out of the two, thus making peace (16) and reconciling both of them to God in one body through the cross, by which He extinguished their hostility. (17) He came and preached peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near. (18) For through Him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit. (19) Therefore you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of God’s household,
The whole book of Galatians is about this very issue! adherence to the law makes one a Judaizer who preaches a different gospel (Gal. 2:16, 19, 21; 3:2-3, 10-11;13;27; 5:1;6;9;18). Any ideology that would pit ethnicities against one another or make for instance Jews adhere to the law again…is a different gospel. CRT and Wokeness added to the gospel make it a pseudo-gospel! trust in Christ alone! That is the consistent teaching of the NT; Christ alone NOT adherence to the law. And pitting races against each other is anti-gospel. The gospel has torn down the “dividing wall of hostility.” These ideologies erect walls of hostility between races and ethnicities. The gospel tears them down! Blessings in Christ!

Exactly right, I keep wondering where the Al Mohler is that took the reigns of Southern in 1993 and cleaned house????? I stopped supporting Ligonier Ministries two years ago, where he is a teaching fellow. After failing to convince the board of the need to terminate him because of his departure from the faith once for all delivered to the Saints by embracing this Social Gospel, which is no gospel at all, I could no longer support the ministry. Mohler has been talking out of both sides of his mouth for a number of years. He embraces the unbiblical Manhattan declaration as well. God have mercy on his soul.

All I can say is that the doctrine and the behavior of the individuals involved in all this should not surprise us. If any of the gentle readers are experienced with church matters, it's little wonder that the world has little taste to be among us. One man said that it's as if they have more discernment than we do .
It's nothing new that this conniving and jockeying for power while utterly eliminating any voice of descent goes on in the name of Christ. I once heard a Jewish man talking about the commandment to not take the Lord's name in vain as not necessarily what I grew up to believe as using the Lord's name as an oath. Rather, it is using one's position or the name of God to accomplish selfish goals.
One thing Dr Fuller and others discovered was that it is entirely possible for an organization that you've invested your life into can pick up and move on and be hijacked. I would say that in a few years you won't be able to recognize it.
Last point, when you have a man stand up like Dr Fuller, there's seldom much reward to be had for it. That's why so few people do it. I would imagine Dr Fuller had plenty of folks behind the scenes who were ready to throw down, but when he spoke up they were all staring at the ceiling. Everyone wants someone to take on the schoolyard bully, but they hang around in the shadows to see how it's going to go and which side they should take.
Shame on all of us for what's been done to Christ's bride. Kudos to Dr Fuller for being a man of principal and conviction.

Southern Seminary is now releasing videos of talks by the folks Dr Fuller is highlighting - these are interesting because they address (indirectly) the major claims by Dr. Fuller - they don’t answer these claims directly by saying Dr. Fuller is wrong and, in fact, lying and improperly slandering them and their teachings, but are weak-kneed claims of what they supposedly believe. Maybe Dr. Fuller is having a great influence on Southern by making them reevaluate their teaching and repenting(?) back to orthodoxy.

Here's the deal, you are going to have to form a new seminary or a new denomination or a variation of this. I have mentioned in other comments on the other parts of this video series, that once Higher Criticism has taken hold, you have reduced the gospel to "Do good things for other people and be kind to animals."
This subject here is a version of that. There is no gospel to teach, therefore, you must substitute a different gospel because you have stripped both law and gospel and the historicity of the Bible away. At minimum, the gospel is secondary. At worst, it is replaced. That is the natural progression that takes place. Error unchallenged, Error tolerated, error elevated to be on par with truth, error put higher than truth and then finally, error erasing the truth. Gone is the clear word and left is the "kernel of truth behind the scriptures." That has already happened, so now the new gospel is Critical Race Theory. A few decades ago it was liberation theology. Then feminism and women in the pulpit. There are all stripes and variations of this involved. This is just the latest. Hold on to you hats, this is just going to get worse. Mark and avoid and form a new sem and denom. They will just infect you. Show me wrong in any case where classic liberalism has taken hold. This new liberalism is the same old thing repackaged for a "woke" generation. Woke and broke. Now give me some money all holy government.
Is there racism in the church? Yes. Are some Christians racist? Yes. Is it a sin? Yes. It too needs to be repented of and forgiven. The Church and Christians are not immune to the Devil's attacks that he uses to think wrongly of our brother. We should live in peace and love with one another, forgive one another. That is a far different thing that CRT.

I respect Russell Fuller for his stand, but should we be surprised this is happening? Southern seminary for the last 10+ years has developed a reputation for sending out deceptive Calvinist pastoral candidates. Did anyone really think they could treat Christ’s body this way and not corrupt their seminary? (I Corinthians 5:6)
The deceptive five point Calvinist who took over the church I was a member of had his masters from Southern seminary. My previous pastor said he was aware of a handful of churches that were split in a two-year period in the area of his previous pastorate when the church search committees “weren’t careful enough about pastoral candidates from Southern seminary.” I’ve heard many reports of this happening from around the country. This type of behavior is so common there’s a name for it, “Stealth Calvinism.”

You can plainly observe systemic ways throughout history African Americans have been given economic leftovers and less opportunity, thus resulting in a perpetuated family and community poverty. At 13:00, Dr. Fuller states, "To me this is slander on the church. And what he [Jarvis Williams] is doing, in my opinion, is he's creating another gospel. He says, 'Reconciliation is between us and the Lord, but then horizontal between each other.' And therefore, he starts saying things like, 'Different races need to be reconciled.' But the Bible doesn't teach that the Jews need to be reconciled with the Moabites... or with the Babylonians. The New Testament doesn't teach that one group of Gentiles needs to be reconciled with another group of Gentiles. The big division in the Scripture was between Jew and Gentile. And God made that distinction in the Old Testament, through the Law, through the Mosaic Law. But in the New Testament, now that distinction now is broken down. And now the One New Man is that Jew and Gentile are seen as one people. That old distinction of Jew and Gentile doesn't mean anything anymore, and the old distinctions of things like: Jew/Gentile, free/bond, male/female -- those are real distinctions -- but in Christ, the only distinction that matters is that we belong to Christ."
"Jarvis Williams is very much against this idea of color-blindness. He believes that people who think that we ought to be color-blind -- it's a form of 'racism.' He doesn't believe it is possible for us to look past skin color or to look past race when we make decisions. But the Bible clearly tells us to do this. Distinctions like "Jew/Gentile" don't make any difference anymore."
"It's another gospel, it's a different gospel, one that I believe we should anathematize."

I agree that conservative resurgence happened, but the movement never recovered the founding creed of the Particular Baptist (The Second London Confession of Faith). SBC conservatives settled and then patted their backs thinking God will be pleased for this compromise. That was never what the bible said. It is clear that you were to remove false teachers for the sake of the flock in obedience to our Lord Jesus Christ. If that fails, the local visible church is lost, then you are to separate yourselves with remnants and restart. The conservative resurgence was a failure from the start (even the terminology is silly) because it was vague and never was about biblical creeds that baptists were founded upon. It sounds like you two want to start "Conservative Resurgence v2", instead of going back to the beginning of the denominational standards.
