The fact that Charlie’s song was so good to start and then he got high on paint and started singing about spiders in his soul is amazing

Z is one of my favorite minor characters because he is always down for anything and is one of the few who seem to be immune to whatever curse the gang seem to have about themselves. Dude is just enjoying life

He was caught off guard and didn't know it was coming.
At 8:35, when Frank says people describe their bar as "a bunch of people yelling over each other," that was a common criticism of the show at the time, that the dialogue was just a bunch of yelling. So great how they took real life criticisms of their show and worked it into this episode.
"Bunch of yelling constantly " My mom said that to me, and now a year later it's her favorite show, even goes to sleep to it.
I like the message in the racially encoded conversation about black shows never winning an award. Sunny has a way to reference something in the most hilarious ways.
The whole jizz conversation cracks me up each time I see this episode. Imagine a bartender saying, "What would you like to drink? We promise we won't jizz on anything." Hahaha!

"Black bars don't win awards" is a reference to Chadwick Coleman (Z) show "The Wire", which had also not won an award by this point despite its popularity and critical acclaim.
I also like that Danny DeVito "knows how to play the game" since he won multiple emmy awards while he was on the sitcom 'Taxi'.

Nice shout out to Winston, straight up the characters calling out cliches while breaking em just puts this show on another level imo😂 never thought of Winston Allie like that, and they’re one of my favourite parts of the show.

It’s odd they spent so much time talking about how Schmidt was Jewish and Cece was Indian and merging their cultures, but not a single mention of Winston being black and Allie being Persian/Iranian (Nasim Pedrad was born in Iran).
I've seen Mac pop off about the orgasms and Charlie's Randy Newman style song more times than I can count at this point, and both still made me wheeze with laughter during this reaction haha.
Another thing you may have missed is that the bell is sort of like a laugh track telling the audience when to drink/when to laugh.
The bell is the laugh track. It tells you when you have to drink/laugh. The burlesque bar Frank visited with Artemis is HBO with its pornography said to be art.
This is the point in the show where I started getting absolutely amazed at the song choices. They are just sticking in songs that they had to license left and right, and I always wonder if they're just trolling the network. Can you imagine what it must have cost to license "Call Me Maybe" and "We are never ever getting back together" in 2013? Did the budget for the show explode because they'd been on for so many years? You'll see it as the season goes on, and in following seasons. They put in these pop songs when just some background instrumental music would do, as though the budget of the show is itself a joke.

The critic is played by Roger Bart. He's primarily a Broadway actor. He won a Tony for playing Snoopy in You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, he was in the original cast of The Producers, and he's about to open Back to Future the Musical as Doc Brown, a role he originated on London's West End. He has done some film and tv work, probably most notably a reoccurring character on Desperate Housewives, the villain in Hostel 2, and the singing voice of Hercules ^_^

They've never won what most would consider a big award. 3 Emmy nominations, all for stunt coordination. I don't think they've ever been nominated for a Golden Globe. There's tons of episodes that have deserved nominations, but there's a few coming that I'd argue should've won against anything those years
Golden years of Sunny
Three times during this episode I laughed so hard I thought I was having a stroke. Dennis" little side eyes before the title card, when they cut to Dee with all the lights and this whole segment where Charlie crawls out the basement and sings this song. My wife thought I was dying.
I love that after the scene at sudz you made the comparison to new girl because that was exactly what popped into my head when watching this episode
This is one of my favorite episodes, love the meta humor they involve into this one! So good, and they way they try to fit in with the mainstream appeal is so horribly hilarious because they just don't fit that at all. Making fun of the more generic sitcom type comedy shows, and Charlies song at the end is chef's kiss!

Louie it's written and directed by Louis CK himself. It's funny, depressing and absurd I would highly recommend watching it!
There are outtakes of charlie singing the song. He goes on for like 8 minutes. When he talks about onion people I got nuts

I wasn’t going to say this because it seemed too obvious, but since nobody else has said CHEERS yet, I have to bring it up. Charlie’s song even sounds like the Cheers theme song. The pop music in between scenes is just like Friends too. And to anyone that can’t see any connection between Sunny and Seinfeld *spoiler alert* that even gets referenced in a later episode. They are definitely different shows, but the humor is similar, especially in later Seinfeld episodes.
Louie was a PHENOMENAL show. Sucks that C.K. took advantage of his position but he's still a creative genius
"Yeah well, you know what he's not? He's not covered in stupid tattoos and he doesn't have a cigarette for a mother!" is one of the sickest fuckin' burns Dee has ever delivered.

I think Archer is a bit similar to Sunny in the disposition. Everyone is horrible the only "good guys" featured are innocent people getting screwed by the main characters.

I'd say the most similar show to Sunny is probably Married With Children. Both shows improved with Flandersization. All the characters are bad people, and both shows have a working class sensibility.

I haven't watched many recent sitcoms but the only comparables to always sunny I can think of are seinfeld and curb your enthusiasm and neither are close to as ridiculously absurd as sunny. They have a similar spirit though. Would love to see you react to those if interested. Thanks for making these videos. Take care.

Closest show I can compare to Sunny is Nirvana the Band the Show, 2 friends try desperately to get their band a show at some shitty bar and it's all done in a very indie, guerrilla filmmaking style. What reminds me of Sunny is the pacing of the dialogue, it all feels very natural and "edgy" in a comparable way. Definitely recommend.
Grew up on Seinfeld. Always sunny is a carbon copy just more vulgar and Intense. The plot is the exact same.. a group of guys and a girl who are terrible people and they ruin the lives of everyone who comes in contact with them.. and generally don’t feel any remorse. Also there are many direct parallels in Sunny episodes that are based off of Seinfeld episodes down to specifics. My two favorite shows. Different times of course but they are the same comedy

"Louie" is an absolutely amazing show. I don't even really see it as that much of a comedy tbh. Always sunny is the greatest comedy TV show of all time imo. Louie is a hard show to explain, but its a lot different from sunny. Also I don't think they were specifically targeting this episode at Louie, but more so at the industry as a whole.

I struggled with New Girl’s later seasons. It got real corny. And you touched on something I feel for real. They absolutely shelved Winston which was tragic. Him and Nick Miller carried that show. I’m glad Lamorne Morris has been getting roles since then. He’s hilarious.
A lot of people miss that trailer park boys really paved the way for shows like Sunny to elevate crass humour for a modern audience. And in some ways fubar paved the way for tpb. Still there is no other show like sunny.

I’m from the UK and I really hate bright cheery pubs that are clean and light. I like old dark pubs with sticky floors that smell like spilt alcohol and the years of smoking pre ban have become ingrained in the wood and upholstery. I’ve been in a lot of pubs like that but it’s getting more rare. The glassy new kinds are what we used to call ‘Wine bars’ and are more like club lite

oh shit, I LOVE that you got context before! This is the first react I've seen do this. I'm right at the start. Excited to see it now. EDIT: also Louise is EXTREMELY worth watching, and it doesn't have many reacts online despite CK coming back in popularity. The first episode is weird (first episode in every season of his is weird, for some reason), but i swear the show is worth it. There is nothing else like it.
I think it disappeared for awhile when the sexual stuff about Louis CK came out. It's definitely a unique show, and it's pretty funny.

I started binging new girl a few years ago and was really enjoying it then suddenly realized I hated it and never watched again😂Cant even remember why.
And I wish you'd really kept up with arrested development because it's totally worth it but they have an "meta" episode just like this when they was getting canceled and it was hilarious pun after freaking hilarious pun

FX has always had great shows comedy and otherwise that don’t get the recognition they deserve but especially their comedic ones, u should react to Atlanta sometime. Always sunny is my favorite but Atlanta is definitely better quality TV and hilarious
