I have never been a believer. I don't know what it looks like. When I was 18 I took music theory. There was a large amount of it that went over my head. Years later I joined a band and practically applied it and suddenly it all started to make sense. There is a concept in memory consolidation where coming back to something lets you understand it.
When I was young I was on the verge of starting to believe. But what we were taught about God /Jesus didn't seem to necessarily follow the stories from the Bible we were taught. So I decided to go for it and read the Bible myself and see how it makes sense. I didnt get past exodus. I was so sickened by the immoral behavior of the supposed heavenly father, I was done, I didn't bother to read further. I didn't become outspoken atheist but that basically destroyed any chances of me actually converting.
Not quite the same for me - raised Catholic - but a similar discomfort or feeling that none of it made sense. Before I was a teen my parents had reached their conclusion & they bailed on rhe church.

I don't think it's fair to charactgerize the mythicist position as "Jesus did not exist." IIRC, prominent mythicist Richard Carrier estimated like a 35% chance that Jesus was a real person. So he's only saying Jesus PROBABLY didn't exist. That's an important distinction.

I have to admit that I am closer to a mythicist. If you say that Jesus was "based on" and actual person, that means that Jesus was a fictional character that did not exist, but used an actual person as a templet. Paul Bunyan did not exist, but the fictional character was based on a person that did exist. When people like Bart Ehrman say that Jesus existed, I don't know what they're talking about. As far as I can tell, Ehrman is saying that there is an actual person there, but he can't tell us who that person is. I don't see how you can say a person existed and not be able to point to that person. I'm fine with the "based on" model, but I don't think you can call that actual existence. Certainly, I don't believe the person that the character was based on did things like; walking on water, healing the sick, raising the dead, etc.. I've been these `discussions` before and it's interesting that the same people who argue that no one is a Christian unless they believe it their way, will have no problem then claiming that the US, for example, is a majority Christian nation. When I was young I was on the verge of starting to believe. But what we were taught about God /Jesus didn't seem to necessarily follow the stories from the Bible we were taught. So I decided to go for it and read the Bible myself and see how it makes sense. I didnt get past exodus. I was so sickened by the immoral behavior of the supposed heavenly father, I was done, I didn't bother to read further. I didn't become outspoken atheist but that basically destroyed any chances of me actually converting.
Not quite the same for me - raised Catholic - but a similar discomfort or feeling that none of it made sense. Before I was a teen my parents had reached their conclusion & they bailed on rhe church.
If I were ever to be converted, it certainly wouldn't be much more than deism. Every organized religion I've heard of has too many problems, both factually and morally.

If you say that Jesus was "based on" and actual person, that means that Jesus was a fictional character that did not exist, but used an actual person as a templet. Paul Bunyan did not exist, but the fictional character was based on a person that did exist. When people like Bart Ehrman say that Jesus existed, I don't know what they're talking about. As far as I can tell, Ehrman is saying that there is an actual person there, but he can't tell us who that person is. I don't see how you can say a person existed and not be able to point to that person. I'm fine with the "based on" model, but I don't think you can call that actual existence. Certainly, I don't believe the person that the character was based on did things like; walking on water, healing the sick, raising the dead, etc.. Nor do I believe the narrative or the words attributed to that character.
So when Bart Ehrman says that Jesus existed, I don't know what he means.
