Dave Mattacks is arguably one of the world's best and most recorded drummers of all time. His recording credits include: Joan Armatrading, Mary Chapin-Carpenter, Sandy Denny, Nick Drake, Brian Eno, George Harrison, Jethro Tull, Elton John, Paul McCartney, Jimmy Page, Fairport Convention, Paul Simon, Cat Stevens, Richard & Linda Thompson, The Chills and XTC, to name just a few. Dave was a member of Fairport Convention for many years and he has worked with legendary producers and engineers including Glyn Johns, Joe Boyd, Geoff Emerick, and John Wood. Dave and his wife now live in the US, where he continues to record and tour.
Best known for his work with Fairport Convention, Mattacks has also worked both as a session musician and as a performance artist. Apart from playing the drums, he is also a versed keyboard player and occasionally played the bass guitar on studio recordings.
He began as a trainee piano-tuner before taking up the drums. He played with several jazz bands before joining the British folk rock band Fairport Convention in August 1969, with whom he worked on and off until 1997. In 1998, he moved to Marblehead, Massachusetts, United States, where he is a sought-after studio musician, record producer, and member of the band Super Genius, while still touring regularly with various acts in the United Kingdom, Europe and Australia.
He replaced Martin Lamble, who had died on 12 May 1969 in a road accident on the M1 motorway, as the drummer for Fairport Convention. Mattacks left Fairport Convention in early 1972 to join The Albion Country Band. Meanwhile, he had also contributed to numerous studio recordings such as the Morris Onproject, Nick Drake's Bryter Layter, Steve Ashley's "Stroll On" sessions, Steeleye Span's debut album Hark! The Village Wait, John Martyn's Solid Air and Harvey Andrews' album Writer of Songs. He returned to Fairport Convention in order to help complete the 1973 album Rosie with a revamped line up of the band.
Mattacks also played on Nine (1974) but left halfway through the making of the follow-up Rising for the Moon, following an altercation with engineer Glyn Johns Some of Mattacks' most notable participation in studio recordings in the late 1970s are the work on art rock studio albums by Brian Eno (Before and After Science) and 801's Listen Now, as well as several Ashley Hutchings-related folk rock projects (The Compleat Dancing Master, Son of Morris On etc.). He also established himself as a touring drummer for Richard Thompson, playing on several of Thompson's studio albums.
When Fairport Convention re-formed in 1985 after a six-year absence, Mattacks was recruited as drummer. He had already been playing with them again during annual reunions at the fledgling Cropredy Festival. Mattacks remained with Fairport until 1997. He has rejoined them on occasion, such as at Cropredy in 2019, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the release of Liege and Lief.

I think I might have seen him play with John Hiatt too, back in the early 90's (or was it Jim Keltner?). Pretty sure Pat Donaldson was on bass for that show, he's another Thompson-band alumnus. I did see a Hiatt show with Kenny Aaronoff on drums.
He is so unique. For as long as I’ve appreciated his music this is the first time I’ve ever heard his speaking voice!
It was a dream come true to work with Dave on a project. Drums were done remotely but he was very conscious to work with us to get everything we wanted. He had zero ego whatsoever. The feel and sounds very incredible.
His CV is just bananas. What an amazing career.

I realized recently that I have rarely heard drums that sounded so good. It helps when the drummer is great like Dave Mattocks. The combination of beautifully tuned drums and technique is perfect.

Two of my favourite pieces that feature Dave are; his playing on "Sloth" by Fairport Convention on the Full House album and with Dr.Strangely Strange on a track titled "Sign on My Mind" from their album Heavy Petting. In the first instance he's in there with Richard Thompson and Dave Swarbrick, absolutely on fire. In the second he's having a right blow out with Gary Moore on guitar, fantastic!

Loved this, as I’ve been a DM fan ever since the early Fairport Days. Do it again now (chapter 2), and ask him about Chris Rea’s Shamrock Diaries album, as on two songs on that album, Steel River and Stainsby Girls the drumming is awesome.
Mattacks and Pegg. My absolute favourite engine room, hands down, no room for doubt.

Don't forget Jim Keltner; Ry Cooder said that, for him, "its gotta be Jim!". ( That was back when Joachim was too young to tour with his dad).
Dave is such a great drummer. Great interview Warren. “Solid Air” is a great album, I also e joyed him talking about Peter Green and how he just kicked in when it came to a solo, that was a time in his life when he was really out of it too.
Had the good fortune of seeing Dave Mattacks at a drum clinic. He discussed the recorded drum sound versus the live sound of drums. I remember his story of listening to John Bonham playing his kit while sitting in the audience and how completely different it sounded 'out front' versus 'over the kit'. Fascinating and informative. Really nice man

Mattacks should write a memoir! Lots of guitarists and singers do (Thompson, Townshend, Richards, Stewart et al), and a bassist or two (Lee Sklar, Bill Wyman), but not many drummers....
Great interview as usual - knowledge, enthusiasm and allowing the other person to get his full answer out! A classic Dave track he didn't mention - the original version of Chris Rea's 'On The Beach'. When he lays into that fat snare, it's one of the great moments of 1980s drumming! Also always loved Fairport's 'Sloth' for pure feel.
Another great artist you have sourced, I'm so impressed. I just love all that Fairport Convention and Nick Drake stuff he played on, Dave is a legend. Respect.

I played drums on a record about 8 years ago, played on a few tracks that needed them, salt can on a few others. About a week later they told me they needed a different feel. You can't really be bummed if your replacement is Dave Mattacks. I never met him, but I got a cool story out of it. I think my morton can shaker made the cut haha.
We consider ourselves lucky that he moved to the Boston area a while back.....great fellah....glad you guys hooked up.

I'm in full agreement re Solid Air. Funnily, I'm privileged to know jazz sax maestro Tony Coe, who played on it. When I mentioned to him that he'd played on Solid Air, one of my favourite albums of all time, he gave me a blank look, thought for a bit, then said.. 'Oh, you mean the pop record!'

I remember hearing the 'Medley' (Lark in the Morning, etc...) when I was about 13 - blew me away. Have heard DM on so many records since including, of course, 'Solid Air'..
He has drums packed in Spaulding and Russell cases. Known for their great quality. So is he as a drummer. Solid Air and Joan Armatrading!
Whatever happened to the factory Spaulding, they have disappeared....

@@Producelikeapro I can elaborate on WHY i loved this interwiew..., first of all, you did your homework...., second, there was some nuggets in this interwiew, like the remark from DM on GAS on snare drums, the "imelda marcos" on snaredrums..., absolutely fantastic! :D and towards the end the psychologic approach to what makes a good producer..., the ability to coach someone to give their best by telling them what you like rather then pinpointin out what you didnt like!

Dave Mattacks was the drummer I most wanted to emulate in the the late 70's. When people would ask who your favorite drummer was back then, there was a certain menu of players that you were expected to choose from, and it was always fun to see faces go blank when you said Dave's name. Then you'd get to tell them about him. I loved how well he served the bands and the song while also having oodles of style and chops that sets his playing apart. Thanks to both of you for this interview (although I seem to have missed any specific mention of Glyn Johns).

Watching/listening to this was time really well spent! "Nonesuch" is a real favorite of mine (Nick Davis & Steven Wilson mixes are both great). My favorite drummers include Phil Collins & Simon Phillips (beautiful stuff on Mike Oldfield's "Crises"). Of course Ringo & Hal Blaine are classic examples. Thanks, Warren.

@@Producelikeapro everything from skylarking onward is fantastic to me! it shows a great demonstration of the songwriting dynamic from andy partridge to colin moulding, while also showing how different, yet well executed the production was on those records (varying from one producer to another, with todd rundgren etc.)

Bruford, Mattacks, Simon Phillips, and Barrie Barlow are the biggest influences on my playing. Delighted this is here - got rehearsals the next couple of days, but will watch the whole thing on Monday, post gig :-)

Had a 90min lesson with Bruford in '93, which was nice. Gave me the confidence to go professional.

We're still in touch. His last appearance on a recording of new music was a spoken line on one of my albums..

I thought everyone who works in music is an XTC fan? Certainly is amongst everyone I've ever met in music! Such a hugely influential band!!
Solid Air by John Martyn has been in my top 5 since I heard it in the early 90's. I was astounded that I hadn't been introduced to it earlier, it's an incredible album. Seeing John at a gig in 1995 was an unforgettable experience. His playing was sublime!

DM is my favourite drummer. I have had the pleasure of meeting him on numerous occasions. I have seen him perform with Fairport Convention, Richard Thompson, Chris Rea, The Albion Band and with a number of other bands promoting Lp's such as, 'Septpeice' ...an excellent chap.
Fave drummers: Stew Copeland, Bonham, Doug Clifford, Buford, Ringo, Al Jackson, Jr., Bill Ward, Buddy Rich, Tony Thompson, Bobby Elliott, etc lol. Love the GROOVE...😎

@@goodun2974 sorry, there's just too many. I love Keltner, Blaine, Benny Benjamin, Uriel Jones, and so forth. Mattacks and Keltner are both on Thompson's Rumor and Sigh which is one of my all-time favorites

I first heard about him in connection with Chris Rea, in the early 80's 🙂 And I was surprised when I was watching an old performance on YT a while ago with a bassist who looked just like him and it turned out it was him, too! 😀 I can't remember the band or song now, but maybe it'll get mentioned further into the video ...

Lately , Don Henley is my favorite. He’s an effective session guy and live guy. Very underrated.
Henley is very subtle, solid and consistent, but I've just never cared for his sound, but that's nitpicking lol

Unrelated to this. What happened to the Beatles albums. It stopped after 2. Enjoyed those.
Warren, I don't know too many people who are familiar with Solid Air. Watching this video kind of gave me a "hankering" to hear it again. Know what I mean? This is where text messages emails and impersonal forms of communication kind of break down. I do appreciate the anonymity still the intent of comments and questions can be misunderstood.
That said, what do you think was the catalyst, or what propelled Martyn to this.......place or State of mind where such an amalgam of music came about? I mean there's a blues influence there's a soul influence but it almost has a genre of its own. I could look it up but I know nothing about the man. I don't even know exactly when that album came out. I'm always behind the curve. I heard 2Wicki by Hooverphonic just 2 years ago. I thought it was a brand new song. It came out in 1996!
And so you understand what I mean when I'm asking about low end. This Record was made way before CDs but it still has plenty of low end. Actually what it has and what I miss and want in my mixes and recordings is "warmth". For lack of a better word God help me. Aja has it. Infinity has it. I would trade my digital headroom for it

Lovely to see an interview with DM, a fabulous drummer but not one of the usual suspects when it comes to famous skin bashers. He’s not flashy or loud or Animal-like, so he sails under the radar for many music fans, but he adds so much to anyone he plays behind. Great dry humour, too.
