“But the whole world is against you” “Are you against me?” “Never” “Then the world is not against me” I always got chills during that scene, im glad this movie is finally recognised for the masterpiece that it was!
Some people don't know, but "Goncharov" inspired Tarantino and Rodriguez to become directors. A lot of famous quotes were put in their movies, like the "Ezekiel 25-17" quote, which was the final words of Goncharov before he put revenge on his enemies.
It's shocking that Martin used traditional euro influences, because the movie feels very Italian, but the narrative and pacing of the film is so modern. Could have been released today. It's almost criminal how critics treated this movie at the time.
"People like you make me feel two things, you know that" "What do I it make you feel" "Angry and hungry, so lets go get something to eat" Martin did a great job at not making this movie overall reliant on action and drama and added comedic scenes like this. Incredible!
I usually comment on Goncharov videos with something in-character about the movie, but I've got no words for this, dude. The dedication to making this look like a real trailer, including voiceovers and everything, is incredible. (Edit: and the ticking clock at the end, I just noticed it, BRILLIANT.) I don't know how many old movies you had to look through to find the perfect material, but my hat goes off to you -- this deserves more views
of course the film was real, guys... I'm saying the trailer obviously is a recreation trying to imitate the original. Because of the unfortunate political climate at the time, Goncharov (1973) wasn't ever released in cinemas. Even most of its trailers were censored and eventually became lost media. The description *claims* that it's a real theatrical trailer, but anyone with a good eye will realize that it's actually the work of a dedicated fan who reconstructed the original trailer from scratch. If you were REAL Gonchheads, you would know this, smh (edit: but seriously, is it so wrong of me to appreciate how good this video is?)
Because everyone else adopted the view that the characters were not speaking English to begin with. And as a native speaker of a non-English language: Way to go!
I remember seeing this trailer after watching The Sting in a tiny theatre in Manhattan back in 1972. I had just graduated high school, and was with my friends. Who is this Scorsese director, we asked ourselves. Little did we know, he would turn out to be one of the best directors of all time.
As a dutch person, it's so cool to me how they designed a fictional train especially for this movie (seen at 0:20) and then years later the NS, the main train company in the Netherlands, made their trains to look similar, as a nod to the movie. Whoever made that happen must've been obsessed with this movie!
You must be mistaken that train you time stamped is the one from the train chase scene that takes place in america at the start of the movie Your probably thinking of the train boming scene which does take place in the netherlands
“If you loved me you wouldn’t have missed.” Such a raw line from such an underrated film, GOSH I wish I could have lived in the time this masterpiece was made!
One of my favorite details is how in Katya's first scene, we see her with a red brooch over her heart, and she gets shot in the heart later on. Little details like that just show how much care went into this movie.
My favorite part was when goncharov said to sovetskaya "stand proud sovetskaya, you were strong, but I alone am the honored one who left it all behind in my oberwhelming intensity" Then goncharov'ed all over the place. Truly a revolutionizing moment in cinema history. Pure kino. Tenoí
goncharov was one of my grandfather's favourite movies, i watched it when i was around ten with my dad. shocked to hear that so few people have heard of it! i don't know too much about film, but goncharov, in my opinion, deserves to be considered a classic.
"When did we lose track of ourselves? -Time. We only lost track of time. Time's all we ever been. Why did you never tell me? Or Andrey? Or the others? -It was never about me, you, Andrey, or any of us. What are you going to do? -I need whiskey" This dialogue makes a whole new realm of sense after you rewatch the film, if they ever made it
I grew up in Saint Petersburg and this movie fills me with intense nostalgia . I watched it with my dad at age 8 and at that time Saint Petersburg back then was much better and warm at the time . After that at the early 2000s things start to change to be gloomy and industrial due to many changes including the aftermath of the soviet union fall . Everything started to change and witnessing the city being stripped of its spirit and historical importance down to a cluster of modern plain soulless corner
If there were an alternate universe where Gornachov was real and Kubrick's Napoleon was finished, what movies would you give to interchange (they have to be of equal value, and asume almost every movie we have they don't)?
Considering that this trailer includes clips from ‘The Godfather Part 2’, ‘Don’t Look Now’, ‘At Long Last Love’ and ‘Fingers’ (plus a few other movies I don’t recognise), I think it’s safe to assume that those movies don’t exist in the parallel universe where Goncharov does exist.
" I thought we could have a life together, I thought we would have more time" "and we will. we will, just not right now" I always loved this scene between goncharov and andrey, it really was the perfect way to show goncharov's realization that he is finally out of time and has been since the beginning. poetic cinema
You know, when Goncharov watching Martin going inside the room with a trap, and the tear appears on Goncharov’s face, because there was nothing he could do, it broke my heart. Martin deserved so fucking better… Rest In Peace my boy❤
I'm so glad people are starting to recognize how good this movie actually is! It's been underrated for so long. The trailer is a little spoilery tho. I seriously need to rewatch this movie sometime soon.
Everybody talks about the Pompeii scene, but for me is the ending, those precious minutes when Goncharov and Andrey realized it was over, that the chance passed and they didn't realize, is just, the way the actors look at each other.
i think this trailer opens up an interesting new analysis, and perhaps one that Scorsese was most likely to have influenced: any of us could be goncharov. if we had the chance, would we make the same choices he did, even knowing it would lead to our own destruction? that's why I love this movie, it just gets deeper
Man, i remember watching this movie for the first time. The symbolism, the characters, the music, the writing, definitely one of the best movies of all time.
Most people don’t know this but god was actually inspired by the market scene between Katya and Sofie that in homage to it he wrote the story of Eve and the Apple
This film is a classic for me even tho I wasn’t alive when it came out. I remember my abuela gifting it to my mom and we ended up watching the movie together when I was a child. This movie makes me feel so nostalgic >.
This movie is so iconic in my home country argentina because it was the first to get banned by the dictatorship due to it's deep themes of anti oppressive governments and liberty.
I just watched this film for the first time and I must say, this is a cinematic masterpiece. From the story to the characters to the performances to that fantastic score. This film is a must watch for anyone who calls themselves a cinephile. Beautiful.
i know everyone’s talking about how underrated this movie is but i can’t stop thinking about the look on goncharovs face when andrey kicked him in the shin on the train 😭 so funny the acting is priceless
Only those who lived the '70s will remember how full the cinema were when this masterpiece was released. Mile-long lines to buy a ticket, clogged streets, riots, dead, and all this for what fifty years later simply remains the greatest mafia movie ever made
oh my god I remember this trailer! It's absolutely hysterical how it completely misrepresents the scene on the boat by the editing. Props to them for including the train because the way it just sets you up for how far Katya's willing to go. 'Would you put out a cigarette on someone?' 'If it was the right someone, sure.'
The 5-hour Director's Cut is the ONLY way to experience this masterpiece! The studio completely butchered this movie with its original theatrical release, and it got eaten alive by the other December releases of 1973. This could've and should've beat The Sting for Best Picture that year at the Oscars!
incredible I can't believe my parents didn't show me this movie sooner. I found a vhs of it in their basement. I was kinda mad they didn't tell me they owned a copy. I mean,,,, how did they even get a copy of it??
This movie is such a masterpiece, so glad it's getting recognized for its true genius, as the greatest mafia movie of all time. They just don't make films like this anymore. . ;)
One of the greatest hits of all time. What a shame is not my favorite genre and I've never wanted to watch it. Still, critics say it's Scorsese's masterpiece.
OMG love this movie so much. Can you even believe it's been slept on for so much of this generation? A lost classic for no reason. Y'all missing out fr
