You know, I think this might be the performance that Bette referred to when she said that her Dad only ever watched her perform once - and that was with Bing Crosby Her Dad thought Bing was a true performer, unfortunately he did not think the same of his daughter. This may very well be that performance! Well, I hope her dad was impressed - he should have been because his daughter is timeless.
That was sweet. I loved it that she was 'flirting' with him and insisted he dance with her. :) No matter how much she was in awe, just like Bette, she was in control. Whattagal.
7 months later , We lost Harry Lillis . Crosby ( a.k.a . BING ) May 2nd , 1903 - October 14th , 1977 ( aged 74 ) It'll be 40 years , next October , since we lost America's , favorite crooner .
Funny - back when there were only three networks (yes, that's right, 3!) you could still count on some wonderful special like this at least once a month. And here we are still enjoying it almost 40 years later. I wonder what shows of today will have such staying power? Honey Boo-Boo, perhaps?
Bette and Bing would have loved and understood each other because they both came from the tradition of American show business that has sadly become just an 'industry'
@burffle This was Bing's 50th Anniversary show business tribute. He was the one to fall offstage at the end. He spent time in the hospital recuperating. Later that year he traveled to Spain to play in a golf outing where he dropped dead on the course at the end of play. Ironic that he died the same year as Elvis, entertainers a generation apart. Crosby was by far a better actor and performer, yet Elvis has eclipsed him!
@StoneyEnd444 From Gonzaga Uni website: " In 1910, he received the nickname "Bing", a shortened name of his favorite comic strip character "Bingo" from the "Bingville Bugle," a popular section in the local newspaper. Everyone, except Bing’s mother, would call him “Bing.”"
Crosby was always cool. Unlike Sinatra and Dean Martin, Crosby embraced the new generation of talent. Sang with The Temptations on Hollywood Palace (on youtube), with David Bowie, and said of the Beatles as early as 1965 "those boys have real talent and they write some wonderful songs". Here he is with Bette Midler, right up to date as usual, just months before he passed away.
It's interesting to see that Bing's microphone is apparently non-functional. Bette's voice miking doesn't change when he is late moving the mike over to her mouth, nor when she looks away to sing to the wings. Guessing they both had hidden lapel mikes, and the visible wireless mike was a prop.
Wonderful number! I don't think Elvis can come close to Bing Crosby's accomplishments. Elvis as did all the singers who followed copied Crosby. Crosby was a much better actor than Elvis, a wonderful comedian, and contributed to numerous technology advances in recording. Also in the early 40's Bing Crosby was the top grossing movie star, the top selling recording artist and had a top radio program. All at the same time.
@brelfan Now that's an honest and fair evaluation covering three generations of music. I entered the communications industry decades ago partially because of my admiration of Crosby, Como and others in their field. The only tunesmith that comes close this day in age is singer Michael Buble....in my opinion. I'm not quite sure what ThePattycake's ramblings were all about, but if he's a nurse, he better lay off the prescription drugs or quit posting while he's loaded!
@GlitterFreakify Haha. I guess she really knocked him off his feet that night, huh? I heard Elton John talk about his own fall. He said, "I'm the only guy I know who can sing about 'I'm Still Standing' while falling from a 20' stage." lol
@ThePattycake1313 "Lady" get out your little Webster's dictionary and look up the term "eclipse". You'll find I used it in the right context. Having spent thirty plus years on the air in both radio and television, I believe I know a bit more about entertainment trivia than you do!
So again fool (Capt Chaos), what did Elvis eclipse Bing at? Rock N' Roll, well dugh! But what you implied, is Elvis outdrawed Bing, and outsold him!? Again I ask, at what? I like Elvis, I like him a lot. But you know what I heard? While he was doing those Vegas Shows, you could walk right up and buy a ticket. Never heard of ppl doing that for a Crosby Show. Did You? Oh hey, before becoming a nurse, I worked in a resturant for ten years. That must make me an expert at chickens!
First off I am no lady. Second, when Bing Crosby died, more human ears had knowen/reconnized his voice then ANY other human voice on EARTH. I know, and I study entertainment as well as music. Ever hear of White Christmas? Silent Night? Adesta Fidelas? Or how about You are my Sunshine? All these singles outsold any single by Elvis and even the Beetles. Look it up yourself. Anyone can be trained to push a button on the air, it does not make you an expert in anything.
Bette asked to sit with me , and then she took her shoes off rubbing her feet right next to me . sing my song for Bette And I On Your You Tube Channel , And get paid for it !
Is Midler singing offkey or is that just her style for a song like this? Crosby, like Elvis, could deliver a song right up to the moment he dropped dead.
Elvis beats Bing on concert sales, however Bing had not done concerts for years but when he toured in 1976-1977, it was a sell out show basically every time. Bing actually comes very close, if not beating Elvis at record sales, we’ll never know the true answer as a good deal of Bing’s stuff was released before they kept track with estimates of 1 billion sales or more. Bing also very much beats Elvis in the box office, and on the radio. Bing on radio is to Elvis in concert to put it into perspective, with about 50 million listeners each week when Bing had his show.
I sang this in 1944 as a 2 year old in a war bond parade in Taft Calif!! The best song to teach your children!!! I've lived by it ever since...
lOVELY ...
Bing died about 6 months later. I can't believe there are people still living today who were able to perform with him.
Mazartz yes, this is the one performance her Dad saw. Bing would die a few months later.
Thanks John
Mazartz Most welcome. Nice to meet another UA-cam veteran commenter!
That was sweet. I loved it that she was 'flirting' with him and insisted he dance with her. :) No matter how much she was in awe, just like Bette, she was in control. Whattagal.

Zeke Kresco 💔🎶🎵🎵🎵🎵what a guy! He is still so beloved .
You grow up with these people and you want them to live forever... I remember when he passed....
I love Bette❤
You can see inside her head she's screaming "Holy sh*t I'm singing with Bing Crosby!"
Toda una gran melodía interpretada por los iconos del canto en inmortalizar por siempre.
WHAT!?? Bing Crosby and Bette Midler!?!?? Why did I not know this existed till now!?
thanks again! Bette shows all her glowing talents here, love her much!
Funny - back when there were only three networks (yes, that's right, 3!) you could still count on some wonderful special like this at least once a month. And here we are still enjoying it almost 40 years later. I wonder what shows of today will have such staying power? Honey Boo-Boo, perhaps?
I want to die.
😂
Bing was old here, in his seventees, and still this great, great voice!
Into his old age , Bing could still anything. Maybe 90% of what he used to be. Not bad
that was really terrific!!! yaaaay..i had no idea this was out there
Happy World Party day! You are on the global playlist to celebrate this day!
I remember watching this.
This is Great!
She is ageless! ~Thanks!

Bette and Bing would have loved and understood each other because they both came from the tradition of American show business that has sadly become just an 'industry'

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
Bing and Bet, what a combination!
I say: "don't mess with "Midler" in between"!!!
Good, better Bette!!!
really cool
Bing Crosby has sold 500 million records, by comparison Madonna = 300 million, Nana Mouskouri = 400 million and ABBA = 370 million
Perfect song for World Party Day!

i love bette, is that real she sung with bing. wow i am showing my age mr crosby had a great voice

Hayley Williams tattoo "accentuate the positive...eliminate the negative"
@fhr331 YES ! exactly what I thought !
Jonah in the whale, Noah in the shark
Why is this version not on iTunes?
For a man who only sang to finance his love of golf he sure looks like he's having fun.
Wow, I was born way too late wasn't I?
@GlitterFreakify Haha. I guess she really knocked him off his feet that night, huh?
I heard Elton John talk about his own fall. He said, "I'm the only guy I know who can sing about 'I'm Still Standing' while falling from a 20' stage." lol
what you sang that???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????/
NO WAY has MIchael Buble got the depth or range of the old crooners
@ThePattycake1313

You'll find I used it in the right context. Having spent thirty plus years on the air

I was watching an interview with Bette and apparently Bing fell 20 ft into a pit that night.
That Divine Miss M...pretty much stole the show from Bing!!!!
+billythedoggie yes and no... different styles...
Wasn't this the same show where Ella Fitzgerald fell off the stage???
So again fool (Capt Chaos), what did Elvis eclipse Bing at? Rock N' Roll, well dugh! But what you implied, is Elvis outdrawed Bing, and outsold him!? Again I ask, at what? I assume you mean Bette Midler!
Couldn't they afford two microphones?
First off I am no lady. Second, when Bing Crosby died, more human ears had knowen/reconnized his voice then ANY other human voice on EARTH. I know, and I study entertainment as well as music. @cliffshell Elvis eclipse him in what? Check into your facts.
Bette asked to sit with me , and then she took her shoes off rubbing her feet right next to me . sing my song for Bette And I On Your You Tube Channel , And get paid for it !
Stephen Colbert can sing
Fallout 4
Is Midler singing offkey or is that just her style for a song like this?
Crosby, like Elvis, could deliver a song right up to the moment he dropped dead.
Elvis kicks Bings ass on record sales, concerts...just about everything.
I believe "White Christmas" is still the #1 seller.... (I just checked--@ 50 million it is the top...)
Elvis beats Bing on concert sales, however Bing had not done concerts for years but when he toured in 1976-1977, it was a sell out show basically every time. oops sorry to give u the thumbs down, meant to be HUGE thumbs up! sorry...
Do you mean Bill Cosby?
Boy she can sure sing but, her voice is just not pretty.
That Bette Midler needs to shut up and let Bing sing
I like B-B-B-Bing, but come on pattycake whatever, he didn't come close to Elvis Presley or the Beatles... Give your head a shake man.
