I got to see them at the NJ Proghouse many years ago, such a fun show.
Mats is an Art Tatum level keyboardist, one of the only ones!
Thank you!!
Hey I see you reacted to Fredrik Thordendals Special Defects. The drummer on that album is the same drummer here!
If you watch the Sol Niger Within reaction, you'll find that Bryan's referencing them (though he seemed to think Mats had a more prevalent role as well)
@@progperljungman8218 Oh really? I watched the Sol Niger Within when it first came out so I forgot then lol.
This is a song that honestly was very emotionally connecting to me already at my first listen.
I do think I understand now why you didn't like it 😊
Not so sure you added "explanation" this time to why I love it so much though... What I already understood catches me, is the combination of rythms, atmospheres and (what I didn't hear you talk about) riffs. I know you're not a "riff guy". I can't believe that you didn't hear them though(?) To me, riffing is a very melodic part of music. It is after all a limited series of notes, creating a melodic sensation - through repetition and modulation. One of the most famous "riffs" would actually be that introductory one in Beethoven's fifth symphony... Simple, yet strikingly effective! I'm not comparing composers here, just trying to challenge your "riff attitude" a bit 😅
Also, that final "chord" on the keyboards was just a playful chaotic ending. The mostly harmonic tonality of the keyboards is very clear to me in most of the song. But I do understand that it might come off as to much at a first listen even for you... It's always mind boggling to me how you can catch as much as you can from a first listen - and keep it in mind through the analysis.
Sorry you had a rough night. Hope this song didn't ruin your day further 😅
This song actually brightened up the day and gave me a bit of an energy boost! So no worries there. It certainly is a lot to take in on a first listen though and it's possible I'd enjoy it more on a second where I have a better idea of what it's accomplishing. If nothing else I'd keep an ear out for the riffs because somehow I did miss them this time around.
@@CriticalReactions I suspected that could be the case. They're mainly simple but effective (like the Beethoven reference 😁). They start off almost immediately with two simultaneously (bass against keyboards) and play around the riffs and with them throughout the song. Together with the harmonies/atmospheres they create magic to my ears.
it is very much inspired by frank zappa
Yup. And RIO/Zeuhl
I feel like they're just collecting a bunch of vaguely related ideas into a series and play them for us. Not a lot of dynamics, transitions, movement, etc.
Or maybe I'm just musically dumb.
Or maybe it just comes off that way when not liking it.
