The Apple Pencil is what sold me on an iPad as well! I had the old traditional tablet that stuck to a computer and then got a screen one, but the iPad is more convenient and color accurate. I have an old air, but I would love a new pro with more storage. What a cool opportunity you had!

I have the iPad Pro 2021 11" and the size is more portable. The 12 is huge, wouldn't fit my regular size bags.
