EDITING ERROR guys, in the Numbers side of the Video, the colour code for the 70mph, 80mph and 90mph is switched around. It is correct for about 2 seconds before I defaults to its default colours. In a rush to make the upload time to release the video today, I forgo'd the last run through thinking that all was ok.... Sorry for any confusion 👍
I bought the regular AI smokes back in February and I’m not kidding I’ve been able to bring my handicap down from roughly 16 to 12. I’m in love with these clubs
I have never understood why club reviewers obsess about irons being strong. So a 7 iron is jacked...does it really matter? It's just a number on the bottom of the club, and should only impact your game on the first couple of rounds as you get used to the new distances. Just think of it a 6 or 6 1/2 if that makes more sense to you. Or just refer to the loft like we do with wedges. Bottom line is know your distances. For my swing, if this club goes 165 for me when a 6i would do that in my old set, I will simply hit this club instead of a 6 when I need 165, and I will adjust all my other club distances accordingly. The number on the bottom of the club is just that...a number. Loft is what matters.
In concept yes you are absolutely right, unfortunately in real life where manufacturers know that distance wins launch monitor wars not functional flight, the strongest loft wins regardless of trajectory and control. Commonly the stronger lofts have meant larger loft gaps between irons to return to a sensible PW loft, which again for medium to faster swing speed golfers leads to irratic and too large distance gaps between irons.... Also when sales are at a premium to a commission based world of fitting, getting a 5 or even 4 to PW set of irons may well mean that they have a nonfunctional long irons. Again in concept you are spot on with your thoughts, yet manufacturers are making irons to sell them and so if they can make their 7 iron, which is the most common iron within the custom m fitting environment, longer than any others, the chances are with the sales speak, the longest irons make most of the sales. It's a shame as it should be sold on functionality but where there's money involved 🤷 Thanks for the comment and for watching 👍🏻
It's all a marketing ploy by the manufacturers to make the consumer feel better about themselves. I can't tell you how many times I have people ask me what iron I hit on a par three and I say a five and then they say they hit a seven to which I said no you hit a five iron with a seven stamped on it.
@@AskGolfNut oh I know what loft they hit my point is the fact that they didn't know. On a side note my six thru three irons are the callaway UT and they only have loft stamped on them
@russellambrosini5344 my personal belief is that all manufacturers should be made to put loft under the number iron... It clarifies many things that way 👍🏻
What are your thoughts on using the 4 iron from this set for a driving iron for a low handicap? Does it have so much offset that it makes you think it’s gunna go left?
No not at all, but I think you'd have to think about the shaft choice as the stock steel option isn't very strong. Assuming being a low handicap your swing speed is decent so you may need to look for an option that gives you the shaft choices you require. 👍🏻
A club like this really shows the great value in the way you approach reviews. Great job & thanks. I'm in the market for an upgrade of the irons this year, and these just earned a hard pass. My low/no tech 12 yr old cavity backs have similar front-back dispersion on mis-strikes.
Hello. FYI. The color-coded swing speed key (9:50 mark) is displayed correctly for about two seconds. It then switched the RED and BLUE. I caught that after a replay as the values were not lining up to what I thought would be realistic.
Yep, it was me being a numpty, apologies for the editing error. I will PIN a comment at the TOP to hopefully tell people that the colour coded section is the wrong way round 👍
Always enjoy your videos, great work....looking forward to seeing the review for the HL and Fast models, especially interested in the 70mph swing speed decent angle.
Most of these super strong lofted GI irons are designed to win in the fitting bays. For the uninformed, they’ll end up with a set of these that simply won’t work in the real world due to the distance gaps at the low end of their bags and shallow descent angles on the top end for those lower speed players as you stated.
I really enjoy your videos and I have been trying a bunch of iron myself because i am looking to change this season, so wonder what your thoughts are or if you could compare the T200 2023, ZX5 23, and the Pro 245 having trouble figuring out which one would be the best fit for me, currently I play AP2 718 but have lost distance because of age and swing speed, looking forward to your next video Thanks
I just found your channel and really enjoying your reviews. I am a numbers guy so I really like how detailed you get on your reviews. Since my swing speed is very close to yours, what is your favorite iron in 2024?
Great question..... With more to come out its hard to give an answer as there are a few...... Wilson CB's, Miz Pro 241, Sub70 TAII to name a few but they are all centered around what I'm looking for in an iron, your reqs may be a little different. Welcome to the channel. I will be doing a Live Stream next Monday around 19:15 (UK Time) (Mizuno JPX925 Launch Day), its open to all, normally Open All Access is the 1st Monday of the Month whilst Members have a weekly Live Stream every Monday, so would be good for you to have you along 👍
Another good and interesting reveiw. I tried these at a fitting I found then to be too long and shallow for me, I didn't feel I had much control with them either. I was eventualy fitted into the HL model, as these were giving me the decent without too much distance sacrifice and more control. Be interested in the data when you do a review of these in due course.
Just bought these 5-AW. On the course, each club is about 1 club longer than PXG 0311P, but since I'm short of green 50+%, the extra distance is welcome. Many of us estimate our club distances by the best strikes, not the average mishit. So Callaway outthought our ego. 😅
Really good to hear you are not readjusting your yardages and then go back to missing so many shots short. So many golfers could easily add half a clubs distance to their thoughts of what club to hit. You've stumbled on the very adjustment most golfers could absolutely do to score better 👍👍
Jay top notch as always. One observation or thought on your comments relative to efficiency. Your comments on forgiveness dropping around .05 or .06 as not bad for how poor the miss was. I agree on the surface it seems ok but at these distances we're seeing a loss of 15-20 yards. That to me isn't great where some of the others like P790 or JPX or Mizuno Pro 245 although not quite as long/fast has better drop off also equates to much less drop of yardage. I guess I'm supporting your comment that Callaway needs to make the middle not as fast. Thoughts?
I tend to only talk in efficiency as unless the club head speed is exactly the same and launch conditions then any yardage gain or drop can't be spoken about. With the millions of golf swings and delivery combinations out there, everyones efficiency, yardages etc will be slightly different baseline, but the drops will be very similar so its that point really that I'm trying to convey rather than any specific yardages 👍👍
IMO… I think the OEMs doing it a bit wrong. I understand that they sell Length . But it’s getting ridiculous when you first have a GW. Then you have to add an AW. So for slower swing speed you basically stop at a 7iron, maybe 6. Focus on making longer irons that get the ball in the air. (On the other hand, you can get “hybrid “ irons as long irons replacement )
And, also there are options from other manufacturers that have the hybrid style irons or even the direct to consumer brands that have hybrid iron design products 👍🏻
@@AskGolfNut All the very best with your swing journey back to zero/zero. Enjoy the process. Despite the challenges, you have one of the more interesting and enjoyable swings on UA-cam. Thanks
Hmm 🤔 may not be a bad idea.... I'm just working on the HL and Max Fast iron video. It's a lot of work for the datasets as I've kind of discovered something quite interesting between the both of them 👍🏻
Great review I’ve tested these and T350 against my Stealth 2, I’ve yet to test the G430 and new T/M Iq irons. I’m a senior 16 handicapper and so far the T350 way ahead on feel, descent angle, ball speed and swing speed. Hope to try SrixonnZX4, Wilson Dynapwr, Cobra Darkspeed and Cleveland XL Zipgroove or what ever they are called. And Mizuno. With club prices need to do thorough testing
Thanks a great technical video which i love. Having tested Apex pro versus Ai smoke both feel great but the smoke is hot. as as 60 plus yesrvokd single figure golfer i need all the help i can get. Feels right for me even tho Apex pro is the club recommended for me?? Hmm decisions
I’ve had a medical event that’s robbed me of speed and muscle memory, so needed to get fitted for new irons, my club fitter agreed with you, the face of these irons are too different, middle to miss hit, which makes club selection on approach shots difficult. I have done the work, speed stuff daily, got my swing on plane, but can’t guarantee middle face strikes, so need help, these offer some, but it’s uncontrollable, shame because the concept is good. Think they have jumped before they can walk, me thinks.
I love the fact that all clubs have different degrees, when playing matches or comps and people check your bag to see what you’ve hit they will be way out with these irons.
Imagine someone goes first off the tee with these irons and then his/her playing partners use the number club as a guage especially if he/she has, just hit a good shot...... They all will come up short 😊 That's why it's so important to know your own yardages and play your game not someone else's 👍🏻
I don't mind at all :-) its a basic elastic sweat band, not to deal with me weeping brow :-) but to stop my glove rubbing on my other wrist during impact and release. During datasets and long winded hitting, which is every video review where I can hit hundreds of shots to gain all the data for forgiveness etc, I can rub my inside wrist raw by the end of it so I have utilised this simple thing that keeps everything nice and pain free 🙂👍
Jay, I think you had the swing speeds vs stats flopped on the first set of numbers? It shows the slowest swing speed (70 mph) with the highest spin and distance and the highest club head speed with the lowest spin and distance? I’m talking about the colored numbers in the lower left part of the video.
Quite possibly so, and apologies for any errors, it's been a mental couple of days and nearly missed the cut off point for upload.... Looks like that final run through I didn't do...... I should have done 😊
To be honest any golfer in that category could play nearly all types of irons. If its only the 10% you are working on then that's well inside a decent players consistency levels 👍🏻👍🏻
What is the big deal about the 7 iron going that far? Isn’t it just a number on a club? I bring this up because there are high swing players that still want more help with a game improvement iron. Can’t they just treat this club as a 6 iron?
For higher swing speed players they really should see this as their 5 iron nearly, I definitely goes as far as my 5 iron can and again if the shaft length was matched it absolutely would. It's more so with the modern world of launch monitor distance selling. I can just remember a time when lofts were set so you had 3 wedges in the bag, then 4 and now possibly 5. They are just numbers, yes absolutely but are sold with an undertone of being something that not entirely honest to the buying golfing public. All manufacturers do it and the trend continues 👍🏻
@@AskGolfNut yeah it’s a disappointing trend. Capitalism/consumerism I guess. I wish they made more GI irons with normal lofts. Heck, my first set was the XR irons which had a 31.5 7 iron. I’ve tried players irons and I just don’t enjoy golf as much with such a difficult iron to hit, so I’m stuck with jack lofted irons. Just have to club up. I have the HMP now and just play my gap wedge as a PW. When these came out they intrigued me but I think I’ll just stick with my irons lol
@natebait88 absolutely, there are custom options including lie, loft, length and shaft options so you can change them how you see fit. Although remember that the loft gaps are designed to run with the designed distance gaps between irons (which alter depending on delivery and club head speed). Altering the shaft length independent of the manufacturers specs may have an affect on gapping between irons 👍🏻
The distance is ridiculous. But on the 70 mph swing, the descent angle + run out is out of control. At 80mph 41.7/12 yards run.... maybe, but it's only just. That's too strong to be a 7i. I'll take my 140-150 total, with an 8 yard run out
Yep now we are getting back to the true meaning of traditional 😊 I'm a blended version and see that 35 degrees is to somewhat modern/classic traditional standard, but still we have come a long way with iron lofts.... Mainly since being able to measure distance with the incoming of launch monitors. I wonder if distance and sales have anything go do with it 😊
It’s all relative. Tired of the 7 iron like a five iron argument. See how far you hit each club on average and pull that number and hope you hit it somewhere near the middle. Mid high handicaps need all the help they can get. I wonder … if a plus handicapper hits his 30+ degree 7 iron 3/4” from the middle. I bet it doesn’t come close to making the distance. So tell me …what is the difference?
Its the camera angle that makes it look more. Gap between the butt end of the grip and the nearest part of me is around 6 to 7 inches away. I'm 5 foot 10 inches so fairly standard, I just have a more bent over posture and stance. Remember posture and stance is only a means to an end so there is no given perfect that all should attain. With the range of weird and wonderful out on tour even now and not having to go back in the years past to see other examples of even more weird and wonderful..... If its functional and repeatable and you don't have to compensate for it, then carry on doing it 👍 Thanks for the comment and for watching.
They are bragging this club up to much I bought them put them in the closet and got my Rogue X back out went from playing bogey golf to one over par with Rogue X the ai irons reminds me of my PGA Ryder cup iron with aluminum shaft that I started playing with in 1972
Before then it was even more loft 😊 I bet some said the same when a 35 degree 7 iron came out 😁 You are absolutely right though, I wonder when the madness will end 🤔😊👍🏻

They are bragging this club up to much I bought them put them in the closet and got my Rogue X back out went from playing bogey golf to one over par with Rogue X the ai irons reminds me of my PGA Ryder cup iron with aluminum shaft that I started playing with in 1972
What happened to tradition?
Mizuno | T-Zoid 1999
7i - loft 35•, lie 61.5°, length 37"
Before then it was even more loft 😊 I bet some said the same when a 35 degree 7 iron came out 😁
You are absolutely right though, I wonder when the madness will end 🤔😊👍🏻
@@AskGolfNut Time to stop putting numbers on clubs & stick to lofts
The major benefit is now you can buy 5 wedges 😂
Forget now who did that..... Was it Ben hogan did a few, years back with their Fort Worth irons..... 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
Hadn't thought of that..... Ooooo custom stamping too 😊
Golf is….’not how’…But ‘how many’ (***)
Could you please use the same number of a club you are testing and if possible the same shaft!!!Otherwise we cannot do our own comparisons by looking at the data.
Which video did i test a different numbered iron? 👍🏻
