Great review of an awesome vise. I have been tying the same #Regal Medallion for about 35yrs. I have used it for hundreds of a size 1/0 bass patterns and probably 1000s size 24 midge patterns...and many thousands in between. I love the vise...it holds hooks. 😎 As always Matt, thanks for all you do for our sport.

@@SavageFlies Hi Matt. Have you done a blue or green Blow fly that would be good for a dry dropper set up. As we are coming into spring I think that would be good to have a few of in my fly box.
I’m not familiar with the pattern but will definitely look it up! It’s finally getting to feel like fall here in the mid Atlantic but we’ve got another month or so of being able to fish hoppers. 😁
I still use my 1st Regal (pre-Medallion but basically the same) as a travel vise but use my Revolution as my primary to be able to use the rotary function. I prefer a c-clamp but don’t like the extended screw knob near my leg. Reversing the clamp puts the screw knob on the upward side & putting felt where it clamps prevents scratching table surfaces. When I used to tie at fly shows at my club’s table, the tables from the hotel often wouldn’t work for a c-clamp, so I used scrap wood to make a small, portable tying table with lathe strip “feet” to allow attaching the clamp. Most stems from most vises are the same diameter, so if you have a C-clamp for an old Thompson A vise, it will fit any Regal or Renzetti vise that came with a pedestal. The possible drawback is that stem or main shaft from a pedestal vises is sometimes shorter, making for less height adjustment which is one of the benefits of a C-clamp. The other being it’s holding power, p.s. Those circle hooks were for freshwater bass & trout (the smaller sizes).
Ahhh... noted re the circle hooks! I must tie another bass bug soon. :-) And good points about stem heights on pedestal vs. c-clamps. I know Griffin has an extension on their stems for whether you want to use it on the pedestal or clamp. You just put the extension on if you want to use the clamp. I don't know any other vise that does that, but I assume it's easier to build that into the design with an aluminum stem. But then again, if I recall, Peak might offer an extension as well. I can't remember...
Great video Matt. The best thing about this vise is that I never have to think about it. I’ve never had a hook slip, the base is just the right weight and build quality is excellent throughout. If you’re looking for a vise that will last generations, this one is it.

Good review and a very generous giveaway, Matt. The Regal Medallion is my vise of choice. I got my Regal around 1987, then upgraded to the Medallion pedestal model about ten years later and also added the Regal midge head a couple of years after that.
I'm just getting started and don't have a bench set up yet so guess I'll pass on this one, maybe next time. That said, thanks for the review and thanks for giving back to the community Matt!

You bet Kent! Are you a saltwater tier? If so, I just tied my first saltwater fly for Thursday's video. It's a tarpon fly based on the Black Death. But I guess I shouldn't assume you're a saltwater guy. I used to fish for the wild rainbows on Kauai. :-)

@@SavageFlies I bought a peak and tied around thirty feather winged streamers on it, jaws warped, collects dust now. First vice was a 1972 Thompson A , still works well, then an HMH Spartan , medallion , peak, Revolution.

a great review of a great vice. #Regal that vice would be fun to tie on, the Traveler hook size adjustment can be a little finicky, it is a little frustrating when you bear down and the hook moves. Thanks Matt for the opportunity.
Been looking at fly tying for the past few months. I picked up fly fishing at the beginning of the year and caught my first rainbow on a dry fly (it was a stimulator pattern) just yesterday! I don’t a single equipment yet but this review of the #regal was helpful getting a better understand of what’s out there. Cheers!

I’m new and have yet to tie a fly. These reviews are helping me out as I search for a vice. My bench is just a tool box, and I was going to use vice grips to tie a hair jig. I also have a few squirrel tails left over from a winter hunting trip. I’ll send the photo and hope for the best. #Regal

I enjoy the channel and I have learned a lot when it comes to tying in general. My favorite fly to date that I use is the Tellico Nymph. Learned it by watching your video and this fly produces in the Smokies. Thanks for all that you do. #Regal

That #Regal looks pretty solid, a lot of my ?'s were answered in the comments, I also left a waste bag tip for Jd338 and you. :o) I have a second vize ;o) that I bought from Cabela's. It's a model A knock off just like my other pedestal vise but comes with a c-clamp too. Haven't used it yet but I like the height factor of using a c-clamp. I usually put my older pedestal on a stack of books (cigar boxes too) to bring it closer to eye level. Tying table? I'll see if I can get a pic with this tablet. Matt you're an awesome dude! You give back so much, I don't know where you find the time to do all the videos and research for them. I'd say mission accomplished. Thank you... and call the vice squad on the resellers ;o)
Thanks Joe; I appreciate the kind words! So where do I find the time? I guess I don't have much of a life! I'm kidding. My kids are teenagers so they don't like hanging out with mom and dad as much as they used to. After work, my wife and I relax together for a bit, then it's "me time" down in the tying room. What else am I going to do between 9pm and midnight? Of course, I just finished Saturday's video and here I am, almost 1:00 am and I'm just finishing up answering comments. I keep telling myself that I should go down to two tying videos a week instead of three, and I tried that back in April, but after a few weeks, I didn't know what to do with myself on that extra night so I went back to three. Oh well. It's still fun, and the more the channel grows, the more I'll be able to do for the community. As long as I don't burn out, it's all good. :-)

Absolutely Matt! You can't go wrong with the Peak rotary, but that thing is a heavy vise to travel with. This Regal would be much easier to take along with you.
The only features i like are quick engagement of the hook,and tying with hooks with a wide bend.Hook range otherwise is limited..You have to buy additional vise heads to cover the hook size spectrum.Great streamside vise.A Peak or a Griffin....Best bang for the buck.
No argument from me on the quality of the Peak. I love that thing too. But I would have no issues with the range of hook sizes with these Regals. I did get the stainless head for my Revolution so I could go down to 24s or so, but 20 is small enough for me so I'm good either way. Thanks for the note Dan. :-)

Nice review. I have this one and as a lefty it works well even though the handle faces me as I tie. I thought that it would be in the way but it’s not. I still prefer my Wolff Atlas for my every day tying but the Regal makes a nice backup.

I'd save yourself $130-40 and get a Colorado Anglers 104 Crown Vise,it's built slightly different but I use it for double duty with a pin drill,it saved me a lot as I bought it on Ebay for the high bid of $30.
That's outstanding Alex! Drop me an email and if the channel has some funds left over next month, I can probably help out. Now J. Stockard does have a "student" vise for about $6. I actually bought one to try, and well, there's not much to it. It's slightly better than nothing, but not a lot better. I'd say the AA for about $12 is a good choice for a classroom.

@@SavageFlies I saw some folks using vice grips in a bench vise - both of which I’ve got. As I look around i see plenty of material on which to l cut some teeth: dryer lint, squirrel tails, raccoon skin, feathers from cat kills, and more fishing hooks than I can count. I’m leaning towards a peak, but the Regal Medallion is pretty tempting. The price on the regal has more than doubled since your review, so I’ll see how it goes with the bench vise before making a decision.
I would love a Regal vice. I’m working on a Cabelas basic fly tying vice that is very hard to tie anything larger than a size 8 hook. Love your videos. #Regal
You can't adjust the tension of the jaws, but you can somewhat adjust how easy it is to spin around. I wouldn't really consider this much of a rotating vise though. But it will certainly hold a hook well!

Why are people hell bent on ruining it for everyone else!!! I can't enter any of the Giveaways as I'm disabled and I don't have a Fly Tying Bench, I have big plastic boxes with all my equipment. I get my enjoyment from watching the videos and learning along the way. 👍😷👍 Thank You 👍😷👍
I’m new and have yet to tie a fly. These reviews are helping me out as I search for a vice. My bench is just a tool box, and I was going to use vice grips to tie a hair jig. I also have a few squirrel tails left over from a winter hunting trip. I’ll send the photo and hope for the best. #Regal

I enjoy the channel and I have learned a lot when it comes to tying in general. My favorite fly to date that I use is the Tellico Nymph. Learned it by watching your video and this fly produces in the Smokies. Thanks for all that you do. #Regal

Good review Matt. That #Regal looks pretty solid, a lot of my ?'s were answered in the comments, I also left a waste bag tip for Jd338 and you. :o) I have a second vize ;o) that I bought from Cabela's. It's a model A knock off just like my other pedestal vise but comes with a c-clamp too. Haven't used it yet but I like the height factor of using a c-clamp. I usually put my older pedestal on a stack of books (cigar boxes too) to bring it closer to eye level. Tying table? I'll see if I can get a pic with this tablet. Matt you're an awesome dude! You give back so much, I don't know where you find the time to do all the videos and research for them. I'd say mission accomplished. Thank you... and call the vice squad on the resellers ;o)
Thanks Joe; I appreciate the kind words! So where do I find the time? I guess I don't have much of a life! I'm kidding. My kids are teenagers so they don't like hanging out with mom and dad as much as they used to. After work, my wife and I relax together for a bit, then it's "me time" down in the tying room. What else am I going to do between 9pm and midnight? Of course, I just finished Saturday's video and here I am, almost 1:00 am and I'm just finishing up answering comments. I keep telling myself that I should go down to two tying videos a week instead of three, and I tried that back in April, but after a few weeks, I didn't know what to do with myself on that extra night so I went back to three. Oh well. It's still fun, and the more the channel grows, the more I'll be able to do for the community. As long as I don't burn out, it's all good. :-)

I love my Peak vise, but the #Regal vise with the C clamp looks like a great option for a travel vise.
Absolutely Matt! You can't go wrong with the Peak rotary, but that thing is a heavy vise to travel with. This Regal would be much easier to take along with you.

Oh yeah, and if you like a c-clamp vise, it's a great everyday vise as well. :-)

What about the maxcatch vise? I've been looking at it for around $50
The only features i like are quick engagement of the hook,and tying with hooks with a wide bend.Hook range otherwise is limited..You have to buy additional vise heads to cover the hook size spectrum.Great streamside vise.A Peak or a Griffin....Best bang for the buck.
No argument from me on the quality of the Peak. I love that thing too. But I would have no issues with the range of hook sizes with these Regals. I did get the stainless head for my Revolution so I could go down to 24s or so, but 20 is small enough for me so I'm good either way. Thanks for the note Dan. :-)

Nice review. I have this one and as a lefty it works well even though the handle faces me as I tie. I thought that it would be in the way but it’s not. I still prefer my Wolff Atlas for my every day tying but the Regal makes a nice backup.
Oh yeah, I've never tied on an Atlas but it looks like a very solid rotary. I'm hoping to do a review of it this winter. Thanks for the note!

I'd save yourself $130-40 and get a Colorado Anglers 104 Crown Vise,it's built slightly different but I use it for double duty with a pin drill,it saved me a lot as I bought it on Ebay for the high bid of $30.

That's outstanding Alex! Drop me an email and if the channel has some funds left over next month, I can probably help out. Now J. Stockard does have a "student" vise for about $6. I actually bought one to try, and well, there's not much to it. It's slightly better than nothing, but not a lot better. I'd say the AA for about $12 is a good choice for a classroom.

I’m just getting into tying and don’t have a bench yet. I do have hooks, thread, vice grips, and few squirrel tails. Hopefully that will be enough
Well a hundred years ago plenty of tiers made their flies without a vise. It's doable, but certainly worth a moderate investment to start with. :-)
@@SavageFlies I saw some folks using vice grips in a bench vise - both of which I’ve got. As I look around i see plenty of material on which to l cut some teeth: dryer lint, squirrel tails, raccoon skin, feathers from cat kills, and more fishing hooks than I can count. I’m leaning towards a peak, but the Regal Medallion is pretty tempting. The price on the regal has more than doubled since your review, so I’ll see how it goes with the bench vise before making a decision.

I would love a Regal vice. I’m working on a Cabelas basic fly tying vice that is very hard to tie anything larger than a size 8 hook.

Matt can you adjust the tension of the regal vise?
You can't adjust the tension of the jaws, but you can somewhat adjust how easy it is to spin around. I wouldn't really consider this much of a rotating vise though. But it will certainly hold a hook well!
