      Samantha was the only one of the group to evolve. And it wasn’t just cancer that made Samantha the confident powerful women that she’s grown into. And most importantly, Kim Kattrall played Samantha brilliantly. In my option Sam is the healthiest person from the SATC universe. She has had issues that she works though and learns from. She went from this awful toxic relationship with Richard to allowing herself to be vulnerable and loved by Smith. She left Smith after trying to be a person she just isn’t, while being able to say “I love you but I love me more” . The women has reached enlightenment! They created 3 to 4 characters on AJLT to try make up for one Samantha. And they totally couldn’t. I would watch the next season without a doubt if I knew Sam was back. She was the most real and brought the realness out of the others.

    Honestly the other ladies weren't just slot-shaming Samantha about the UPS guy, they were being incredibly classist about it. The guy is making an honest living, gets a cheeky mouth hug from a willing lady, and Charlotte and Miranda are talking about him like he's pond scum. Samantha was absolutely right not to tolerate it from them.

      It would of been better writing after the brother problem, and her own divorce, that Charlotte becomes the more supportive after her heartbreaks.
      I remember when Charlotte was insecure about Samantha was getting married before her. When Sam was crying about her first serious relationship has a small dick, Charlotte actually asked how good he is with his tongue. And she made the nicest argument against getting back with Richard and made a gesture she normally doesn't. THE GROUND WORK WAS THERE

      That's not that strange in my opinion. It fits into how she sees the world. Carrie always "rooted" for Steve and thought he was a good guy that cared about Miranda very much, and at that point if I remember correctly Steve spent at least months trying to talk to Miranda and get things worked out, on top of many years of marriage and a "good relationship". Not to mention Steve was so gutted by the situation he confessed it to Miranda himself and tried to work on their marriage, something Richard never did. I could go on but the point is
      None of that is true for Richard.
      I think it's pretty normal for a person to have different views on cheating depending on context and the people involved and in different stages of their lives.

    That sex was so degrading. I’m so happy that Smith was able to see past her darkness and understood why she was acting that way/ loved her despite it. I think you put it beautifully when you said, “The show ultimately did us a disservice with Samantha by not digging into the pitfalls of her promiscuity.” I definitely feel like Samantha is amazing, but a mystery. I would have loved to see more of her inner workings and innermost thoughts throughout the show. She’s so powerful and fascinating to me. I’ll adore her, forever. But I agree that some of the guys she entertained were faulty and counterintuitive. Would have loved it if the show explored her reasoning in these scenarios more.

  • @crazydiamond88

    I also wish they had dived deeper into Samantha’s promiscuity- not to shame her, but to learn more about her. Ever since I watched the movie Sex and the City 2, I was really shocked that Samantha did not realize the dire consequences she could face for being promiscuous in Abu Dhabi. They were only going to be there for what- 1 week? If she couldn’t last one week without having sex… couldn’t that be considered an unhealthy addiction? To the point where you can’t think rationally for your own safety? If you know you could go to jail for being physically affectionate in a country…. why not be concerned about it? I never once saw Samantha actually take the law seriously, but idk if that’s her being white from NYC and thinking she’s shielded from Abu Dhabi because she comes from another country. 🤷🏼‍♀️

  • @TwentyTwo_22_
    @TwentyTwo_22_ 5 місяців тому +15

    Samantha is so loved as a character, perhaps more so than anyone else in SATC, because she's the only character who is happy with her lot. She doesn't want marriage and children, like Charlotte, she doesn't want any more than the men she dates can give her, unlike Carrie, and she is completely satisfied in her career and her place in the world, unlike Miranda. She was absolutely the most loyal and loving friend, because she already had her chosen family and loves of her life, she didn't need a man to provide that for her. The other girls were mean to her and it's sad they had her put up with it. There was something weird in the writing that had Carrie as the centre of the universe and the three other women as supplicant maidens, constantly putting her needs above their own - that is such an unealthy relationship and you wonder what was in it for the other women. As you so beautifully argue here, Samantha had deep vulnerabilities, which Kim Cattrall showed, but the other characters mocked or dismissed. I really hope Darren Star is working on 'Samantha In London' and we get to see more of this magnificent character again!

    I like how you mention the pitfalls of Samantha's promiscuity. This isn't discussed much but the scene before Samantha gets derided by Richard for sleeping with his architect, we see Samantha mixing business with pleasure by asking the guy if he could refer her to work for Richard. Her mixing business with pleasure is highly unprofessional and imo, the scene is caused by her irresponsible behaviour. It was poignant that satc was trying to touch on gender equality but that happened as a result of Samantha's actions as well, so i don't believe she was a victim of gender inequality. Men and women who conduct business this way eventually get a bad reputation. I'm all for Sam's acceptance of her sexuality and promiscuity as long as it doesn't interfere with her work.

    The whole series long especially from the 4th season on they tried to make Samanthas character appear ridiculous but Kim Cattrall still arrived to embrace and embody everything about her with high class. That's nothing that everyone can.
    It's quite hurtful even as watching it from the outside to see Carrie treating Samantha.

    Very glad to see an analysis for Sam in particular! I fully agree that much about herself is glossed over, both in the show and meta fan commentary. I hadn't connected the dots about the implants coming right after Richard; but I've always thought e.g. James and the cheating heartbreaker(s) are dismissed too quickly when people take her seeming preference for non-monogamy at face value.

    Samantha didn’t break into Richards home. She sends him a voicemail saying “you broke my heart the least you can do is let me use your holiday house” he knew she was there. Doesn’t excuse the broken window tho lol! This is great video ❤❤

    I adored Samantha and always admired her confidence and ability to support her friends. Despite the mistreatment she endured, she was still loyal and unwavering (she really did not deserve the treatment she got, ESPECIALLY from Carrie).
    But oh my sweet red onion crisp Christ, Richard was the absolute WORST. This is where I theorize SJP gave the worst stories to Kim because of the alleged behind the scenes beef.
    I genuinely adored Smith and thought he was one of the best love interests on the show. He was kind, supportive, called Sam on her bs, and genuinely put in the work to be there for her. I'm still pissed they broke up in the first movie.

    I think their relationship was a really great development for Samantha. Because she needed to experience vulnerability and put herself first while really feeling her emotions, instead of putting a sex bandaid all over her heart

    Speaking as a woman who wants marriage and children, Samantha is my favorite! Not because of her promiscuity or marriage aversion, but because she had the best character! And im not talking about "show character," but personal character. She was the only one who was actually, legitimately, FULLY supportive of her friends! She didnt tear the others down. She was always there when they needed her. She was the polar opposite of Carrie. The show should have been about Samantha...

      I agree. I’m nowhere near as sexually outgoing as she is but I respect that she always had her friends’ back. That’s super important to me. And I hope you eventually get married and have your kids someday soon!!!

      @aspyn.j_ thak you!! Unfortunately, I'm turning 37 in 3 weeks, and having a first meeting with someone from online dating this evening... The chances of me having children of my own are slim. However, I do plan to foster someday. I may not get to have the family I want, but I hope to be able to give children/teens in need a safe place!

    Honestly, I loved Samantha’s truthfulness in the show and her portrayal but I always wondered why the hypersexuality (dw I know why). I’m just hoping they give her a decent arc on why she acts this way on AJLT but knowing AJLT is hectic, they might never dive into it or do her a disservice. 😭

    • @aspyn.j_
      @aspyn.j_  3 місяці тому +3

      she's not in AJLT lol kim cattrall got sick of being bullied behind the scenes plus they wanted her to send nudes to BRADY in the now-cancelled third film. but you are correct, sam's behavior was sometimes just too much and a pretty obvious tell that she self medicates and harms with sex.

    Smith was the hottest angel of a man! Samantha got very lucky with him even if they didn't end up together. He was even calm and reasonable when she dumped him rather than talking things over with him about doing more things for herself. She didn't try making changes just dumped the poor man.

    What people don't underrated at all and they keep being having a difficulty at understanding that's not a fair cheating because in your clip it's being shown that samantha yelled to Richard i love you but i love me more and that shows how selfish is she and that's she only planned on dating and flirting with him to get money and be as just as rich as him and at this moment when Richard gave her a watch she should have thanked him instead of i love this watch more and Richard should have left her because she didn't say that she love him first and then her she decided to put her priorities first and then Richard but that does mean that i side with Richard at all he is also so wrong about his actions become you mustn't do a wrong action again a wrong action to get vengeance because at the end a betrayal is a betrayal no matter what!!!!!!
    second!!!😡😡😡😡 and these type of women are are narcissism and egomaniac!!!!😡😡😡😡
