The Approach Light Decision Bar & How to Use It

- The approach lighting system is designed for one primary purpose: It helps pilots transition from IMC to a VMC landing when reaching approach minimums. When you think about it, this is quite an impressive accomplishment given that this typically happens in less that 30 seconds starting a 200 feet HAT (for typical ILS or LPV minimums) while flying at speeds in the neighborhood of 100 knots. Here's a short video explaining how the ILS architecture works.
Came across this vid by accident. What a very clear cut and informative explanation about the approach bar. I never knew it’s purpose. Will be looking for more of your videos Rod. I am a very elderly Flight simmer with a passion for flying who will never get a licence but can enjoy flying without putting a lot of lives in danger!
Rod Machado is one of the great aviation teachers out there. When I was a kid growing up in Seychelles, I learnt to fly with Microsoft Flight Simulator 1998 and enjoyed his lessons (if only my real-life pilot flight training was as enjoyable as Rod's virtual lessons!). You could say he was my first instructor and yet I never met him in person. You have touched the lives of many aviation enthusiasts from all around the world, Rod!
Thank you, Rieul:
That's very kind of you to say and I really do appreciate the comment. And I'm happy to have been your first flight instructor, too.
Best,
Rod Machado
Thanks to you Rod Machado, and my dad who got me Microsoft flight simulator 98, I am now a certified pilot working on my instrument!
Your voice was the first one I heard when I started training haha.
Wow as a CFII and ATP pilot with over 4000 hours of part 121 time, I never knew this, very neat!
Always fantastic. Thanks Rod!
this 4:3 aspect ratio is wild stuff, man
Very helpful info that I've never heard before!
Excellent explanation
Great Video. Thanks.
Excellent, Rod! Mark at IFR
The best!
Happy Easter Everyone!
Is there a difference between the Decision Bar and the Roll Bar? I hope someone replies. Thanks!
I don't understand the question. When you say "roll bar," what do you mean? Let me know and I'll answer the question.
@@Flight-Instructor Well, I saw an illustration of runway nav lights where the 1,000ft Roll Bar and the Decision Bar are almost the same, and I was wondering if there is a difference between the two. I was referring to this picture -->

@@nooffensemeantbut1597 Well, that's interesting. I've never heard or seen the decision bar (and the mini-decision bar...the one at 500 feet) referred to as a "roll bar." So, to answer your question, they are the same thing according to your picture. But "roll bar" is not a common term. Where did you find that picture?
Best,
Rod
@@Flight-Instructor I just search for ”Runway Navigation Lights” on Google, and I found that in the results, I guess choosing it as a reference for my report is the wrong choice. Anyway, thank you for entertaining my inquiries. 😁
Make sure you have a roll bar in your jeep or wear a helmet
