What makes a great nurse? There are a million different answers to this question, but from the mouth of a nurse herself, here are the top ten traits she deems to be a great nurse.
1. Be true to your patients. Don't come to work sick and if you are ill, call in early to find a cover.
2. Be true to your profession. Embrace your life and be happy you chose it.
3. Be true to your peers. Do your job and help your coworkers whenever you can.
4. Be true to yourself. Take time off when needed, don't try to be a superhero.
5. If you are in doubt, ASK. There are no dumb questions, only dumb mistakes.
6. Laugh at yourself. Don't take yourself too seriously.
7. Make friends with your coworkers. Relationships make everything worthwhile.
8. Take time for family and friends. Don't pick up extra shifts on principle, have a life.
9. Don't eat your young. Be nice to the newbies, you were one of them
10. Be honest. If you make a mistake, own up, and fix it, or ask for help.
11. Double check everything. Take the time to be precise.
12. Educate your patients. Make sure they know what they are taking and especially how much.
13. Educate yourself. This is your career, make sure to stay up to date as much as possible.
Following this basic advice is sure to make your time as a nurse more smooth and enjoyable. It's really about finding a balance between work and life, attitude and ego, self and others. You have to take care of yourself as well as others. You need to enjoy what you are doing more than half the time. And you need to want to be there.
