Air Ride, 4 Link, and an Epic test drive on the most hated Mustang ever! Tech Heavy

- It was time to make this Mustang II lay flat on the ground! Follow along as I design and fabricate a custom rear air bag suspension setup. This is very unconventional in form and has been controversial in the past and still is.... see if it works! Warning, I'm not and engineer, I am a backyard enthusiast. This is intended as a fun video that will show how to have fun and learn a few little fabrication tricks along the way.

As someone who isnt a fabricator, but needs to learn, the explanations on metal and where to focus heat on welds and all that is absolutely what sets you apart on these build videos. Keep on it man
Right on. Glad you’re getting something from the videos
I agree
Yeah he's a fabrication god, the reactions of the other car builders on Motor Trend + are this short of awe
The Mustang II is underappreciated beauty in my opinion. I've seen a few guys doing builds with them recently too!
They are cool. Some certain angles
They can be built to be pretty cool little cars, I'm building a 78 cobra on my channel if anyone cares to take a look and subscribe, trying to get to 500 subscribers so I can enter the no name nationals next year.
Saw the thumbnail and was like "dang that looks like the beach here in Ventura," and sure enough it was!
Such an awesome strip
The build on the Mustang is awesome! It takes a craftsman to look at something and say "yeah, I know, but what if I...." This episode took me back to 1987 when I did a 2400-mile road trip in a worn out 67 chevy pickup that severely need a tune up, had bad suspension, questionable brakes and a K Mart cassette deck with one working speaker, and every earthly possession I had. I had no business taking that trip in that truck.....but it was one of the best road trips I ever taken. Just me and the possibility of complete failure, lol. Rock on, buddy!
Sounds like one for the books!
Literally my favorite type of episode layout. What a sick mustang 2
Glad you enjoyed this one
This build just makes me smile. It may end up being the best looking Mustang II build, yet, particularly for a non-Cobra model. There aren't many to choose from, but who's counting.
Always been the overlooked mustang
Thank you for building the best worst Mustang ever! This has been a really fun build to enjoy watching and not take too seriously. The results are great.
I agree. This one has been a lot of fun and no stress
Dave you successfully made a Mustang II cool! I really dig the suspension setup and your fab skills using relatively simple tools is top notch 🤘🏼
Thanks! It did turn out to be a fun little car
Dont normally stop to comment but this is a great episode and an amazing example of why your followers love you. Nice job Dave!
Thanks so much!
It was great seeing and talking with you at the Duct Tape Drags! Glad you made it!
What a haul!! That was a fun weekend
Man, you got me wanting to slam something😂. Who knew a mustang 2 could be cool? Great video!
Get on it!
That is an amazing rear suspension set up sir. I know you've been super busy with 49 different simultaneous builds but let's talk about that shop, Messy as I've seen it - it literally looks like three hand grenades all went off at the same time HAHAHA. I love your content Dave, keep it up!!
I agree. Too many vehicles. Too many parts
@@thedirtheadshedbut so much fun
Agreed. My shop looks about the same. I am building KEI trucks with tracks with Jeep bumpers along with keeping my friends rock drilling equipment and other customers vehicles, while my Chevy's 38's are dry rotting away 😢
Great episode just enough filming to keep it interesting yet not monotonous. The edit was really good too.
Thanks for sharing your talents and adventures!!!
Thanks for the feedback. It’s hard to show a bunch of fab work and hope that everyone sticks around for the drive or payoff.
Just came across your channel. It's great to see a fellow fabricator that mig welds his creations and doesn't think that every little piece has to be tig welded. Great job on the rear end set up. I used to own a 76 Cobra 11 Mustang with the 302 and 4spd. Always regretted selling that little car. I will be subscribing.
Well I’m in. Thanks
Nothing cooler than making a car that nobody wanted into such a cool experience machine.
Totally true
Sure
HELL YEAH BROTHER!!! Great work from the team. Side note, really appreciated the return of "Buenos dias!"
You bet!
I most certainly enjoyed watching you make all that stuff ! I would love to mess around in that garage... you could build anything !
It’s pretty fun making things!
It is an amazing story, the Mustang from Jim's junkyard in Washington state to Tucson AZ, then the Pacific Ocean. A car revived from the scrap pile to a spunky performer. Congrats
I can’t believe how it’s getting such a cool new life
Amazing job Dave. So glad you did the reverse 4-link. I really wanted to see that happen and it did! It turned out great and then we got to see it drive a lot of miles. Shout out to Vern, you guys should do some stuff together. He has built some awesome stuff through the years. I really enjoyed his mag stuff back in the day.
He has a lot of talent and style. I still want to build a Jeep similar to the ShrinkRay TJ
@@thedirtheadshed that would be awesome. That Jeep is a legend.
Super nice. Thanks for taking us along your journey. In 86, in high school, I had a 72 Nova RS, my buddy had a 69 Mustang, and another buddy had a Cobra like yours with a V8. We would race all over those back roads.
I’m sure! Good memories
This thing is so sick. Love the low. I can almost see some 60s Mustang bumpers modded to fit and roll pans under to give it a vintage-y feel. Thank you for the videos Dave!
I’m working on options now
Awesome video and awesome build! Thank you for keeping the dirt everyday vibes alive in your own way! This is like having the ultimate set of dirt everyday extras too! I missed when they stopped doing those it was so cool to get to see more in depth info!
They were awesome. I was surprised when they stopped too
Absolutely love your fabrication content! Feels like I pick up something, a new tip or trick every time I watch an episode. Keep rocking!
Right on. Glad you’re enjoying the shows
Thanks for the ride, Dave! Beautiful drive and well worth the miles even IF you had no appointment at the terminus.
The Journey IS The Destination
See, you get it!
Bad ass dude! Nothing like watching something lay out for the first time! 🤘🤘👊👊
It never gets old
I love your roadkillesque builds, and it's great that you don't needlessly beat the crap out of them. Good work, keep 'em coming!
Yeah. These things need to be enjoyed. Not thrashed on
Car turned out awesome Dave. What a transformation. I really want to bag a old car and with each of your videos I feel a little more confident. Thank you
Get something more mainstream and you can buy kits to make it easier too
You brought a car back from the grave yard ,this has been a long journey for it but it's definitely rad to see it back on the road living.
It’s been fun putting miles on it
Never thought I’d like a Mustang 2. Loving this build!
Thanks. I never liked them either
Loving this build, you have to flake and pattern the roof now!
That’s in the plans
Dude, you are hilarious. I can't believe you drove that little car that whole way.🤘
It felt like a bad idea most of the time
A fellers startin to think Derek's singing about the task is contagious!😂 Loved seeing the two of you on roadworthy rescues by the way!🤘🔥👊
Those were some fun episodes!
Lil D Has been singing to his Shop fairies for over 15 years that I've known him
I'm sure he has. I think it's just something we all do when we're by ourselves doing the tasks and have no music playing. Sadly UA-cam makes it worse it sucks about copyright crap.
this makes me want a Mustang II and I never was big on their looks or anything before. You have a vision!
Thanks! It’s a cool thing . From certain angles
I do all the time. I will never stop watching your show though. I hope to see you on more vice grip garage. That was an amazing episode. I wish you would be on a roadkill garage. I think it would be great.
This road trip ended with me on a roadkill garage. Keep an eye on Motortrend for some more Mustang 2 action
Love it Dave!! Nice work!! “Torch time with Dave” spin off show? 🤣🤣 I’d watch.
Got to have Side. Side hustles
We just got back last week from a family vacation. We went from Grand Canyon, to monument valley, to Moab Arches and Canyonland, to Capitol Reef, Bryce Canyon, Zion, antelope canyon. It was an AMAZING trip!
So cool! Enjoy all this great land
The fun in driving your junk…what an amazing trip..thanks for sharing👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks for watching. It was pretty nuts driving it that far
Shout out to dave! Im so glad I found your channel! This guy is for real, this is not a u tube personality. Hes genuinely this guy you see. When I would take trucks over from orw to get exhaust work done he would shoot the shit with me and tell me about what he had going on. Miss you bro!
Dude. Thanks for the support. Hope all is well
A nice, gloss, lace panel roof paint job and that thing will be mint!
You read my mind
Never took a second look at these cars but they have cool lines on them you really did it justice!
Thank you
Anything, everything near Tucson is amazing. Beautiful.
It’s a cool area
The car is turning out so cool. I love Wallace - always stop by on road trips!
It’s such a cool town. I actually cut a bunch out where I was taking about the town
The first “mustang mini truck”. Awesome stuff. At least somebody is doing something with mustang ii’s.
I’m having fun with it
To take a car from basically a junkyard and then drive all of that way. That's cool. I remember car/truck magazines. I miss them.
I’m super impressed with this little car
It was so cool to see this sweet mustang in person. That thing is absolutely slammed. Impressive work! And impressive it was able to do that trip completely untested.
Glad you made it out to the drags. Great weekend
I love the fact that anyone is doing anything with a Mustang II. Yeah, compared to what came before and after it, they were pretty bad, but when taken in with the context of their time, they're likely the reason that there still is a Mustang at all. I always did like them, and wanted a v6, 4 speed hatchback. Maybe one day.
They definitely had their place in automotive history. I dig it
So glad you are doing this. I love the notchback so much better than the fastback.
Me too.. although Derek @vicegripgarage just bought a rad fastback
Man-o-man Dave You have made a car that I though could never be cool, COOL AS FUNK. 🤟😎 Great job...
Thanks! I’ve always disliked them too
🤣👍
Great job, you are a fun fabricator to watch. Nobody builds up a 2300! I hope you do, lots of performance parts available from the oval track world
I would like to. Even if not super gnarly
What a great episode. Great drive too. The fabrication was really good. Good to see Verne. Great job
Thanks. I’m glad I swung by Verne’s place too
This has been my favorite build of yours so far. Its the ugly duckling that just looks badass now!
Thank you. It’s the one I’m having the most fun with!
Great job! I still can’t believe you chose that car to spend so much time and effort on, but congratulations on your journey and thanks for taking us along. I was waiting for you to break down and not make it the whole time….
It’s a cool little rig. It definitely cut in line though. The other projects are mad
I’m enjoying the build on the Mustang and the fact that the link bars could probably survive a trip thru the Hammers. Not too many 4 link cars with 1 3/4” .120 wall links!😊
Shoot, the lowers are 2x2 .250 wall…. Massive overkill for a 70hp car
I had a 74 Mustang II Ghia in high school. Same color with a white vinyl half top. It had the V6 and a 4 spd. Had a lot of fun with that car.
I wish mine still had a decent top
I have always liked those mustangs. Especially the cobra ones. You've done a great job on this one.
Thanks . I love it as a 70s lowrider
Super thankful for you Dave and all you and the dirthead shed.🙌🙌🙌
I appreciate all the support
Local Facebook has a few of these right now. Sandpointe, Rearden, and the Valley here. One in the same color with a good bumper I believe. Always liked your builds.
I’ve seen them.. thanks
If you raise the rear upper link mount it will roll the pinion up less. It will improve geometry for performance too. That upper link going uphill while the lower is level is going to be negative antisquat, or it will squat actively. When you hit the gas the rear is going to try to pick up the tires essentially.
I know what you mean.. but I’m not changing things at this point. It handles great
Cool ride! Glad it made it all the way, love the Ford builds! I would have had to take it down the drag strip just for fun.
I ran it hard the next week. Keep an eye on roadkill garage
Awesome episode. Great fab work as always.
Thanks again!
I just did a trip from cda to moab and back and you’re not kidding…. Utah is legit. I wish I had more time off from work I wanted to just cruise my Jeep all over the state. Awesome build and road trip video, thanks for taking us along!
It’s a great state! Need to retire at some
Point and enjoy it
I love your channel. Keep doing what you’re doing. Thank you Dave for such great contact. Everything you do.👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks for the support! Spread the word!
Mustang looks awesome Dave! Passed my all time favorite car on the freeway. The Impala!
That one was clean and simple
@@thedirtheadshed I missed an opportunity on one years ago when I was around 19-20 (48 now). Owner lived down from us and I went to work and when I came back home it was sold.
Dude I feel you on the old man glasses, it's like a whole new world.. everything is in HD.. lol
It’s amazing
I can't believe I'm saying this!?! Cool rig, I have detested this model for 40 years. Dad and ex-girlfriend's sister had tan ones. But slam it and the game completely changes. What vision!! Mind officially blown!!!🙉 You don't need wipers, RainX will take you far and wide. Rain, snow, mud, bugs, small children and animals!
That stuff is pretty great
This is one of my favorite DHS builds because there’s a very remote chance the junkyard mustang ii would ever get this level of a build and it’s so cool. So awesome.
Thanks! I totally agree
Dave, this was an awesome episode. I’m pumped to see what you’re doing with the mustang, and actually getting to enjoy it.
That’s the key. Keep the downtime to a minimum
So much fun to see a 4wd dudes approach to low riding. Also, way to make an uncool car super cool. Thanks for posting this!
Heck yea. Thanks for watching
I also run a four play on my delta 88, 5 years of 200 psi. Such a solid unit!
They are always good
Great content man. I like the tech heavy stuff. Cool to see your process on this stuff. Always into the air bag setups.🤙
Glad you dig
Awesome build, Awesome video, looks like you had a Awesome time, I thoroughly enjoyed your content I hope and pray you get back home safe
Thank you! I made it home
@thedirtheadshed Wonderful to hear, that Mustang is nice congratulations on your build thus far
My Mom had a 76 Mustang 2 Ghia. Blue with white top and blue interior. Was a great car!
Sounds awesome
My mom had a mustang II when I was a kid... best I can remember it had a V8 and overheated constantly.😂 good times!
…lasting memories!
This is some really great work. You have a great deal of tallent and the knowledge to go with it Dave.I have seen a ton of 3 & 4 links done on You Tube and I like this very much. 👏👏👏👌
Thanks. It’s a setup that I have had good luck with
Dude the mustang 2 has came so far it's honestly one of the best ones I'm going to say in the United States those were never cool in my opinion but you've made this one absolutely badass. Hopefully to see you at one of the car shows here in Spokane very soon
I appreciate that. I’ll be driving it a lot. I’m sure we will cross paths
You were on my side of the world at the end!. Rincon Parkway, Ventura California. I work on the platforms you saw out there. Great place to hang...Great job on the Mustang..
I was so stoked I made it there in time for the sunset
Those things can make awesome muscle cars when given the right attitude
Yeah. Derek at vice grip just picked up a cool one
Im definitely not a mustang guy. But dang that bodystyle with that stance definitely makes me wanna buy one to drive. Awesome job
They have always been overlooked,, especially as a lowrider
I got to see this at the DTD and it was so rad to see in person. Supremely bummed i didn't get a chance to say hi when i saw you at the bonfire. You were swarmed with folks, and when i finally was going to join the swarm you were gone for the night. After seeing this episode i understand why.
Sorry I missed ya! I was up early the next day to make it all the way to central California
Dave ur gonna make the Ford Mustang II cool for the First-time .. lol
I didn’t see that coming
You managed to make a Mustang II cool. That is quite an accomplishment. Thanks for the content, keep up the excellent work.
Glad you dig it
The funny part is there appear to be more toy Mustang II's available (like hotwheels, cheap R/C toys, etc) than there are toy SN95's - if toys are an indicator of popularity.
Always cool to reinvigorate something unloved, that's been my jam since the 90s too
Right on! I need to put some hours back in this thing
Leave it to Dave to make me almost like the mustang 2! Finr job sir! Thanks for showing the process.
Im gonna buy up all 8 of them left in the country.. prices will soar!
Such a fantastic attitude. Thank you for doing what you do.
Thanks! It was a good trip
I think the car looks great especially with the color, and the RoadKill style roadtrip absolutely killed it👍👍
That was so fun
One of your best episodes yet Dave, well done. I do hope you’ll get back to the Hardbody, but this car is a great distraction.
It’s so fun and cheap. I love it
Pretty freaking rad, can't say it any better
Thanks. I agree
You sir are a visionary and a magician! To see the potential in something so uncool and create a gem like this is pure genius. I still think it needs a nose job but, hats off to you. You are an inspiration!
Thank you. Still working on bumper options
Garage Fab has an excellent video about figuring out an equal length, parallel link setup (even with triangulated bars) to keep the pinion angle the same through out travel.
I’ll look it up
Thanks for sharing, treally enjoy watching the fabrication
Glad you enjoyed this one!
The tuck on those rear wheels is great! Everything looks better when it's bagged and slammed. I figured it would be kind of neat when you were done with it, but I'm not at all a fan of Mustang IIs, however, you've reminded me everything is cooler once slammed and modded. lol Air Lift Solenoids are my favorite, but good manual valves are definitely the most reliable and simple setup.
I need to add a tank and get a better compressor in here. Then it’ll be a little more user friendly
@@thedirtheadshed Yeah, I could tell you were just running a compressor and opening the valves. Your patience is even beyond mine to wait for that. lol
So much work, so much information and so incredibly well presented, easily one of the very best channels AND we get to see it outside of the US. The Mustang II is way underrated but I believe anything will turn out cool coming from this shop.
Thanks for all the kind words
That is a cool car now! Rear independent suspension would've almost been easier! If you need a hand cleaning that shop up, I'd gladly come down😊 keep up the good work but don't feel you need to put aside family time for us viewers!
I want to do a rear independent setup, but not on this
Great episode Dave. Sorry I missed you in Pocatello, again.
It happens! I’m about to pass through again
Thanks for taking us along on your journey, yet again.
As much as people like to hate on the Mustang IIs, I find there's something amazing about them.
Glad to hear your enjoying yours and it looks so much cooler being slammed.
Maybe its because they're fast? No. Because they handle great? No. Because they're comfortable? No. Because they are so cool lookin? No. I don't know why people hate Mustang IIs.
They are just weird enough to be cool.. but not as cool as an earlier Mustang
I'm diggin' this car. A ton. I'm also diggin' that BMX T-Shirt with the 70s vibe. If I could find one, I'd buy one
Check Amazon. I think that’s where my brother got this one
@@thedirtheadshed So shall I do
13:40 parallels bushings or canted bushings one removes the need of a sprung sway bar tho in doing so turns the triangulated links into torsion bars that act partly as a sway bar thus needing to be welded using SAE graded spring axle type bar not standardized mild steel tubing.
I’m not sure about all that.
You drive past my house all the time, its good to know you love North Idaho as much as I do!
It’s such a great place
It's amazing what stance can do for a whole lot of body style LOL. Such a cool car now, I dig this thing!
A Thunderbird Turbo Coupe drivetrain swap could be cool, would be a nice power increase just keeping the engine stock and an 5-speed T5 trans would be a nice upgrade. Early carb versions are pretty terrible(factory draw thru I believe), but you could convert an EFI 2.3T to blow thru carb with 2bbl intake and a little work if you wanted to keep it simple.
Oh yea. I just hate parting out a whole car. Maybe if an engine pops up
you build cool suspensions i love watching you bring them to life! great video!
Glad you like them!
