How to build a hydrofoil From Home: Start to finish.

  • Here's a quick video of how I build my latest Hydrofoil start to finish with some chill background music. There are many ways to build a hydrofoil. I decided on this construction to make it easier for a DIY build with no CNC, foam or vacuum bagging.
The hydrofoil is built with a timber core, reinforced with fibreglass and carbon. The wings are then attached to the aluminium fuselage with SS screws. This parallel wing attachment point (aluminium bar) is key in the foil design, creating a foil from home that actually works. A lot of DIY foils fly terribly, but using this design, the foils fly great due to the wings natural angle of attack.
The setup is then connected to an aluminium mast and baseplate.
The result is a foil that will fly even with the slight variation/imperfections that a first-time foil builder might have. You can make several wings and easily interchange them on the fuselage, and with production mast, the foil can be attached to any board or mast length.
    Hope you find it helpful!

beautiful video, very very nice to watch.

Thanks for sharing the stoke Luke and getting more people on the water! Foiling has easily doubled the number of days that I can go kiting here in Canada. Lots of fun, with fewer self rescues and fewer injuries. My kite control is better and my footwork is better. Note: your first few video links aren't working.

Nice! Yeah great for getting some more days out there for sure. and thanks for the heads up, i have corrected the links.

Nice foil! I have made a few now, using a budget 3D printer to create both molds and cores so I love seeing other methods.

Oh nice!!! How did it go with the printed core?

@@FlukesKitesurfing it worked pretty well on some big wings. You are in trouble if you get any water inside though! Stabs are easy to do with just a chopped carbon or thickened epoxy core

@@brendan-shanahan yeah nice! Cool idea with the printing. I had a few people ask about that actually.

I've been making wings and stabilizers for myself and I share your pleasure at flying what you build. I was thinking about a carbon fuselage but I like your aluminum bar. I wonder what size stock you began with? Thanks for the video, well done.

Awesome, what sanding pads are u using?

The sanding Grit? I use 60-600 for the whole build. I explains then in the in-depth video steps too if needed :)

curious what wood you are using?
I shape surfboards and foil boards and I want to start shaping my own custom foils -using production foils as a template- thanks!

Yeah nice, if youre already making boards, making the foil is easy. I'm using cedar, because i have it, but you can use most lighter woods. A good list is wood that is used to make surfboards. Hope that helps and let us know how the build goes!

@@FlukesKitesurfingthanks-- you need to get a pneumatic bladder sander-- I used one for 4 years making guitar necks for Ernie Ball guitars. It is an amazing tool for sculpting curves in wood and a necessity in guitar building
