  • To mark the Fiftieth anniversary of the last steam workings and closure of Penrhyn Quarry, 30742 Charters organised this event at Threlkeld Quarry and Mining Museum using many of the locos visiting the quarry for their steam gala. The event took place on the evening of Thursday July 23rd. and Friday July 24th.2015.
    The following locomotives featured;
Hunslet large Quarry class 'Hugh Napier' and Hunslet 'Lilla' from the Ffestiniog Railway.
Hunslet large Quarry class 'Sybil Mary' and Avonside 'Marchlyn' from Statfold.
Kerr Stuart 'Stanhope' and Hudswell Clarke 1238 from the Moseley Railway Trust.
Also featured was the wonderful Steam Navvie from Statfold which for me was one of the highlights and possibly the closest man has got to creating a dragon!
Grateful thanks to Martin Creese for organising the charter and to the many volunteers from the various railways and from Threlkeld for a very enjoyable event.

Now that's what I call boys toys, and what a play ground. Beautifully videoed with wonderful sounds, and oh boy that steam shovel ..... Thanks Austin, you brought sunshine to a wet and soggy Summer Sunday.

Many thanks Geoff, boys toys indeed. I wouldn't mind having one of those excavators, certainly wake the neighbours up on a Sunday morning!

I've never heard of this location before Austin, so thanks for bringing it to my attention....Wonderfully creative videoing as always...another Gem for the archives....Bob

Many thanks Bob, it's an interesting place, quite a collection of excavators and other items awaiting restoration. The gala, which was over the two days following the charter, actually gave better opportunities for video from what I've seen after looking at other videos

What a cracking video. They could easily turn that into a mini gala like foxfield. I believe this is the first time I have ever seen a steam face shovel in action. I could have watched that all day. One of my favourite steam videos of the year.

Thanks very much for your kind comments. They do stage a gala, in fact it's on this weekend and the locos from the charter will be in action

I have to admit I had never heard of that Railway until now! An absolute gem. Thanks for sharing it was us. That Steam Excavator was amazing. Cheers, Dave.

Thanks Dave, it was my first visit to the quarry and it was certainly an experience. I've never seen anything like the Steam Excavator, a wonderful beast! It's resident at Statfold Barn

That was very impressive. I appreciate the difficulty of avoiding repetition but you pulled it off. For me the two highlights were the opening shots of polishing etc and, of course, the monster. I remember, as a child, seeing a diesel equivalent of the excavator when a new section of road was being constructed. I was fascinated then and never forgot those scenes. To see a steam version was a treat. thank you.

Many thanks for your kind comments Keith. There was no doubt that the excavator was the star of the show and it was wonderful to see it in action

Thanks Steve, sunshine on Thursday evening and cloudy yesterday which was probably a good thing as I believe it can get very hot in the quarry. I could have watched that steam navvie all day, fabulous machine

Excellent arrange of a vast variety of shots, plus very professionally edited as well. Well done, you have captured the sights of the Threlkeld Quarry and Mining Museum narrow gauge railway superbly well.

Not a venue I've heard of before Austin so very interested to see you video. The locos look very tidy and good to see other typical quarry machines in use. Chris

Thanks Alan, it was the second part of my Cumbrian adventure following a visit to the Ravenglass and Eskdale. The charter was OK but somewhat repetitive as far as video was concerned apart from the Steam Excavator which was a wondrous machine

What a lovely setting, marvellous view across the valley. Those little engines look nice in lined black; was that the standard livery then?
