    you are really great .

    I did this exercise for about 20 minutes, then played my warm-ups. Wow, it completely transformed my bowing, and I definitely "feel" the workout in my right hand fingers.

    Thank you, Lora! This video is such an important one if one wants a beautiful sound on the violin one day! It feels silly to keep doing these excercises but I think it will pay off BIG TIME in the long run! I will just do them and think of the beautiful sound I will hear in the near future! Practice makes perfect.

    08:58: BTW: I find the final exercise - using ones fingers to go between the ferrule and the end of the binding - feel really quite nice to do. Sort of delicious! Maybe that's my body's way of motivating me to do them!! 😄

      Hey John, you are exactly right. Someone once told me that when you do something correctly on violin, your body rewards you, and you want to do it over and over. It was a famous Norwegian violinist....dang it, I cannot remember his name. But it struck me. So, great minds....

    P.S. Right now I'm studying with Eric Mrugala and his rubber band method. IF I remember correctly my 4tgrade instructor had us try this method. I don't think I gave it enough time to be effective. My right bursa is activated by the rubberband tied to the transome of the bow. Thats where I'm at.

    This looks like a good exercise for independence of bow fingers. I'm not ready to do this exercise right now. I am using the method o f a rubber band to hold ring finger fast to the eye of the bow. I feel the colle method would interfere with my progress with the seat belt for my ring finger. Maybe in the spring I can tackle the colle bow exercises. I am a stubborn and slow learner I think your method is equally beneficial but I want to keep your colle bow method separate or I will get confused. I want to spend a month with the seatbelt I seem to be getting some hereto fore tone that has been latent but I ve never heard before. Tentatively I'm stoked about this seatbelt method. It seems to auto- roll the ring and second finger like a cats paw and gives or sets the attitude of the bow with a professional leading edge giving a nice grip on the strings. My understanding is to use a flat wrist. I'm not being contrary, I can accept your method but I've just learned to down into the bow and I don't want to confuse where I've just been. Thank you.😅

      ABSOLUTELY. I agree with you.....swim in the pool where you are, until you are ready to try a different pool. It all accumulates and adds to your technique. Keep it up.

      @@RedDesertViolin You could tell them from me that the exercises will bring dividends, even 30 secs to a min per day. It will really 'add up' and prepare them for the next levels. I am 58 (sounds crazy old!) and taking a high grade exam next month. It's the attention to practicing small, key but apparently insignificant moves that brings one on.

    This is terrific, thank you. Is the thumb curved in tall knuckle position?

    • @RedDesertViolin
      @RedDesertViolin  8 років тому +1

      It is not curved as extremely, but you don't want it to go totally straight either, because that causes a loss of control. Good question!

    • @GlennFiddles
      @GlennFiddles 3 роки тому

      @@RedDesertViolin I had the same question. Then I guess when you are in the tall knuckle position the fingers aren’t completely straight otherwise the thumb would also be completely straight. Instead there is still a bit of curve in the fingers?

  • @katejoyce1503
    @katejoyce1503 5 років тому

    Hi Lora you are a great teacher. I am an adult beginner and I don't understand something about this exercise: it seems when I watch pros (yourself included) that their knuckles are not so flat as when they do exercise with the bow. I wouldn't care except I CAN flatten my knunckles, curve them, well without a bow. Why do I really want that bend in the knuckle--I can see it allows much more control of sound but my question is do knuckles really need to be flat on each string or just soft? I don't mean to be so literal but as a beginner I can't tell how much I need to get this just so. Hope this makes sense.

    • @RedDesertViolin
      @RedDesertViolin  5 років тому +1

      Hi Kate,
      Great question. I teach by exaggeration, and most students realize that after awhile. (but some don't....and then I realize...oops....they need to un-exaggerate that motion)
      So, when you LITERALLY play violin, your knuckles will make the "tall-knuckle, flat-knuckle" motion, but it will not be the the extreme that my "Extreme Frog Exercise" forces you to do.
      One exception is if you are doing special colle' strokes at the extreme frog, which does occasionally happen in orchestral music, then your bow hand will come VERY CLOSE to my exaggerated knuckles....but still, maybe not QUITE as much.
      Hope this helps. Glad you are watching and learning from my videos!
      L

    • @RedDesertViolin
      @RedDesertViolin  5 років тому

      FOr now just focus on relaxation, no tension, and FLEXIBLE WRIST. (flexible fingers can come later after you have a good mastery of posture, left hand form, basic tone production, pulling a straight bow, and a good bow hold. Once all those elements line up, then you can start doing a little colle'. (but flexible wrist will get you half way there)

    Hi Lora! Bill Brisotti raised this question earlier - about what the thumb is doing when your hand is in the 'tall knuckles' position. Now, if I'm doing right, the thumb is, as you say, not totally straight but it has moved away from being in contact with the ferrule and bow hairs. Is that correct?
