    According to Anthony and Joe Russo who directed the movie and to Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely who wrote the movie, "Winter Soldier" is a reference to a quote from Thomas Paine who said "The SUMMER SOLDIER and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country" meaning that people who only stand by their country when conditions are nice will abandon it when things get tough. A "WINTER SOLDIER" would be the opposite - someone who stays faithful even no matter how difficult the situation gets. The filmmakers said the title "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" has two meanings. First, it means Captain America vs.The Winter Soldier (Bucky's codename because he never gives up until he achieves his mission). Second, it means Captain America is a Winter Soldier who stands by his principles even if it's difficult and the cost is high.

      I always figured it was a reference to the fact he operated during the cold war. In a sense he's a soldier in a war that isn't actually being fought in the open.

      The seizing of the Winter Palace in St Petersberg in 1917 was the precipitating event in the Russian Civil War and the Soviet rise to power. AKA October Revolution, Bolshevik Revolution, October Coup, October Uprising, and *Red October*

      Winter Soldier first appeared in the comics in 2005, way before the Marvel movies came out.

      It's funny, but the first two American movies that came to my mind where Russians are the heroes are "Delta Force 3,'" a sequel with Mike Norris instead of Chuck Norris in which Spetsnaz and Delta team up to stop a terrorist attack and "Driven To Kill," at terrible Steven Seagal direct to video where he plays a former Russian mobster turned novelist.

      Yup. At the height of the Cold War, Marvel made certain that Russian characters could be heroic or villainous. This was at a time when other media only portrayed Russians as villains.

    Bucky and steve's friendship is what makes me cry the most, in the entire marvel universe, i love bucky so much, seriously, he's my favorite marvel character, imagine what he's had to go through since he fell off that train , since that day his life hasn't been the same, he's used as a puppet, I love him so much, he and steve are my favorites ❤

    This is the movie that really made me like Black Widow's character. It's also a personal favorite movie of mine in the entire MCU. I kind of wish they'd play around with various genres more with each movie installment like they did with this one.

    Sam Wilson is my favorite character in the MCU. He was just such a generously nice guy from the very beginning. And as The Falcon, he is so awesome.

    Fun Fact: Black Widow is Russian. In the comic books she is a product of the Soviet Super Soldier program much like Captain America was the result of an American super soldier program. She isn't the same, but she IS similar in that her abilities are enhanced.

    The list that Cap gets is different for each region. For example the UK release of the film has the 1966 World Cup and The Beatles on it. I think there's a website somewhere that shows all the different versions of the list.

    One of my favorite Marvel moments is when the random tech guy refuses to launch the ships. He fully expected to die in that moment, but he still refused. He doesn't have super powers, he's just an ordinary person, but he had a heart of integrity. He shows that ordinary people can still be heroes, without being wealthy geniuses or super soldiers.

    Paused in the middle to say I appreciate you for exposing Russian stereotypes (also in the Black Widow intro scene in the Avengers). I'm not Russian myself, but I see stereotypes on screen every time an Israeli\Jewish character appear. I mean, we all know Hollywood cinema does stereotyping all the time, and sometimes it's entertaining. But it's very important to talk about them and out these notions for being ultimately wrong.
    But I still find the irony in you saying "finally, a cool Russian villain", and two minutes later it turns out he's a boy from Brooklyn...

    I paid Marvel three times to watch *The Winter Soldier.* Redford selected an unknown Scarlett out of hundreds for his film 'The Horse Whisperer'. Steve and Natasha at their peak performances. The attempted assassination of Fury. Steve escaping S.H.I.E.L.D. was amazing! The Falcon and Winter Soldier friendship started with Bucky stealing Falcon's steering wheel - while driving😳! "Always keep BOTH eyes open". Thanks Dasha for watching this great Marvel movie! ❤ from Texas.

    “Winter soldier” is the opposite of a “summer solder” written by American political philosopher Thomas Paine, summer soldiers are patriots when it’s easy and give up when things get difficult.
    Also Winter Soldier because he was kept frozen in stasis between missions.

    Yes a 22 Magnum is a gun. The number refers to the size of the bullet and Magnum means it has extra gun powder in it.

    The bad guy on the ship at the beginning is a classic comic villain for Captain America, known as Batroc the Leaper, a master of Savate: French kickboxing.

      Played here by real-life MMA champion, Georges St. Pierre. Also a Canadian, I don't mind saying. Regarded as one of the best MMA fighters ever, hence the impressive fight choreography.

    Captain America is one of my favorite comic book characters along with Nightwing, Spawn, Hellboy, Green Lantern, Aquaman, Shazam, Swamp Thing, John Constantine, The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The Doom Patrol, The Punisher, The Fantastic Four, Iron Man, & Deadpool.

    This is one of my favorite Marvel movies so far. The character development was brilliant allows the audience to become very invested in them. Now, the question is, will Dasha be doing a Black Widow costume for Halloween? Dasha, you could totally pull that cosplay off. 👍😁

    In the 1970s, Marvell introduced to be Sam Wilson/Flacon character for the purpose of introducing the topic of racism to Captain America stories. The MCU did not use the Sam Wilson character for its intended purpose until the TV show, which you should definitely check out.
    Sam was not the first African-American Marvel hero by a long shot, but he was the first black hero that I encountered as a child in the 1970s, so he will always hold a special place in my heart. I'm so glad they did the character justice in the Falcon and the Winter Soldier TV show.
    I love the Nick Fury story about his grandfather. It's great because it sounds like a story that could have been told by any African-American. It's great because it reminds you that he is an ordinary human just before they put his life in danger.

    When Steve writes down "Trouble Man" in his little book, there's a list of items he needs to catch up on. The list is different, depending on what country you're watching the movie. You're watching the U.S. version, so you saw that list. I'm not sure if there's a Russian version.

      According to the MCU wiki, Cap's list in the Russian release is:
      - Yuri Gagarin
      - Vladimir Vysotsky
      - Soviet Union Dissolution - 1991
      - Moscow doesn't believe in tears
      - Disco
      And then the items that appear on every edition of the list (Thai food, Star wars/trek, Nirvana (band), Rocky (rocky II?), Troubleman (soundtrack) ) - Apparently because his fingers move over those, it was too hard to be worth editing those for each release.

    I like the explanations already given, but I always took Winter Soldier to mean that either it was a refernce to him appearing after WWII and operating primarily during the Cold War OR that it had to do with the fact that they keep him literally frozen until he is activated to be used on a mission.

    Hey Dasha Marvin Gaye’s “Trouble Man” album is a movie soundtrack with mostly instrumentals. As a life long fan I wouldn’t suggest starting there…instead I would suggest you start with his album “What’s Going On?” It is sublime and gives you a better sense of his incredible gift besides his songwriting…his voice!

And not just soul and Motown, but rock, blues, funk, country, film scores... they all either started then or underwent seismic shifts, and most of the good changes that wound up sticking were because of black artists.

      "What's Going On?" is actually what the writers intended to reference but for some reason an agreement couldn't be reached with the Gaye Estate so "Trouble Man" was used instead.

    As the newly upgraded S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarriers were falling, I was just watching this like-->👁️👄👁️, all a gasp thinking"great idea to watch this in a IMAX!", just smiling and watching on.

    Vibranium can absorb, store, and release large amounts of kinetic energy. So that’s why the fall didn’t really hurt him, the shield absorbed the impact
    Since he was kept on ice for years at a time, and since the USSR often associates itself with the cold climate, he was nicknamed the Winter Soldier.
    The twin characters at the end are Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, mutants in the comics, associated with the X-Men, but at this time the X-Men and some associated characters were owned by Fox, not Disney, which inlcudes not being able to use the word mutant. But Disney could still use those two characters because they’re also associated with the Avengers, as long as they’re not classified as mutants. So here they’re “enhanced” after Hydra experimented on them with Loki’s scepter. Disney recently acquired Fox, so we should be seeing X Men and mutants in the future.

      No, "Winter Soldier" is a very specific reference to Paine's poem about the American Revolution. It's about a pivotal moment in American history, when the creation of the new country was very much in peril.

    TRIVIA:
    1. Nick Fury relates that his grandfather was an elevator operator which is what Samuel L. Jackson's real-life grandfather did for a living.
    2. When Alexander Pierce opens his refrigerator, a jar of Newman's Own sauce is clearly visible as an homage to the two times Redford and Paul Newman shared the screen.
    3. Steve's catch-up list differed by country but had seven fixed items: Thai food, Star Wars, Star Trek, Nirvana, Rocky, Rocky II and Troubleman. The countries for which items were added to the list include the US, the UK, Australia, Italy, France, Spain, Russia, Brazil, South Korea, Mexico and the Spanish-speaking countries of South America collectively.
    4. Nick Fury's tombstone bears the epitaph "The path of the righteous man. Ezekiel 25:17". This was Jules Winnfield's favorite verse in "Pulp Fiction", a character Jackson is famous for playing.
    5. The Winter Soldier's moniker comes from the Thomas Paine quote that "the summer soldier and sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands by it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman." 'He' is the winter soldier, the inverse of 'the summer soldier'.
    EASTER EGGS:
    1. When Steve and Natasha enter the old SHIELD headquarters at Camp Lehigh, they find portraits of SHIELD's three founders: Colonel Chester Phillips, Howard Stark and Peggy Carter.
    2. Sitwell reveals Zola's algorithm is targeting potentially problematic persons of interest like Bruce Banner and Stephen Strange. This is the first reference to Doctor Strange in the saga.
    3. Agent 13's real name is revealed as Sharon by Natasha. This hints at her familial tie to Peggy Carter by implying she is her niece, Sharon Carter.
    4. Although corrupt in the film, Jack Rollins is the actual name of a heroic SHIELD agent from the "Nick Fury vs. SHIELD" comics who alerts Fury to the enemy infiltration.
    CAMEOS:
    1. Co-director Joe Russo plays the underground doctor tending to Nick Fury during the scene where he reveals he's alive.
    2. Captain America scribe Ed Brubaker plays the bearded Hydra scientist tending to the Winter Soldier during the scene where Pierce orders his mind wiped.
    3. Stan Lee plays the Smithsonian security guard who discovers that Cap's World War II uniform has been stolen.
    END-CREDIT SCENES:
    1. Hydra leader Baron Wolfgang von Strucker plots to sacrifice minor Hydra cells to the ensuing manhunt while consolidating remaining resources to advance their research on the Chitauri Scepter and the two surviving guinea pigs of their human experimentation, the Maximoff twins, who are seen exploring their nascent abilities to move faster than the eye can see and to manipulate objects telekinetically.
    2. Bucky visits the Captain America exhibit at the Smithsonian to learn about his and Steve's past.
    The next chronological stop in the MCU are Episodes 17 - 22 of Season 1 of "Agents of SHIELD" which complete the first season of the show.
    Hey, Dasha! Marvel films hit their stride with "Winter Soldier" and it remains one of the highest regarded films in the saga. The movie represents a tonal shift in the MCU towards mature, gritty storytelling with real-world consequence which roped in many non-superhero enthusiasts. It was made in the style of 1970s political thrillers like "Three Days of the Condor" and "The Parallax View" with a healthy dose of "The Manchurian Candidate". As with all the best espionage films, the story was expertly filled with twists, double-crosses, skullduggery and shocking revelations culminating with an incredible race-against-the-clock crisis. Showing Captain America break faith with the institutions he serves due to his disillusionment with systemic corruption is extraordinary and demonstrates his integrity. The plot is drawn from 'The Winter Soldier' arc of Ed Brubaker's legendary 134-issue run on "Captain America" during the 2000s. Paired with the moody, naturalistic illustrations of Steve Epting, the duo revitalized the character and his supporting cast for post-modern readers. The bold move of resurrecting Bucky Barnes and reframing his legacy was a stroke of brilliance that left an impactful mark on latter-day Marvel comics. The element of SHIELD being infiltrated by subversives is drawn from the 1988 limited series "Nick Fury vs. SHIELD" written by Bob Harras and illustrated by Paul Neary. The Triskelion as the headquarters for SHIELD was lifted directly from Marvel's secondary Ultimate Universe line although the film locates it in DC on the Potomac whereas the comics set it in New York Harbor. Similarly, the technological interpretation of Falcon is a nod to the Ultimate iteration of the character whereas the original Marvel iteration can telepathically communicate with birds and has a glider harness with mylar wings and titanium ribbing.
    The cast is remarkable. Steve Rogers comes into sharp focus here and Chris Evans truly made the Captain his own the third time around. Carrying over from "The First Avenger", Sebastian Stan returns as a grimly resurrected James Buchanan 'Bucky' Barnes, Toby Jones lends his voice to the disembodied digital form of Dr. Arnim Zola and Hayley Atwell briefly appears as an aged Peggy Carter. Anthony Mackie makes a strong, likable impression as Sam Wilson aka Falcon as does Emily Van Camp as undercover Agent 13. They join returning allies Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanov aka Black Widow, Cobie Smulders as Agent Maria Hill and Samuel L. Jackson as Col. Nick Fury who gets showcased in a hair-raising action sequence all his own! Having an actor of Robert Redford's stature play Alexander Pierce was not only a casting coup but paid tribute to his role in "Three Days of the Condor"! Rounding out the villain roster is Frank Grillo as a pre-Crossbones Brock Rumlow and UFC welterweight champion Georges St.-Pierre as French mercenary Georges Batroc the Leaper, two traditional Cap antagonists. Callan Mulvey plays the itchy trigger-fingered double-agent Jack Rollins. Maximiliano Hernandez as Agent Jasper Sitwell, who was introduced in "Thor" and was seen throughout the saga in films, One-Shots and "Agents of SHIELD" episodes, is revealed as a Hydra sleeper along with Garry Shandling as Senator Stern returning from "Iron Man 2". The head of Hydra himself, Baron Wolfgang von Strucker, played by Thomas Kretschmann, puts in a cameo for the end-credit scene as do the Maximoff twins Pietro and Wanda played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen. World Security Council members leave their shadowed holo-conference screens to show up in person this time with European representative Hawley, played by Jenny Agutter, being the only returnee from "Avengers". North American Councilman Rockwell is played by Alan Dale, South Asian Councilman Singh is played by Bernard White and East Asian Councilman Yen is played by Chin Han. Steven Culp and Nestor Serrano have bit parts as irate Congressional Committee members who grill Natasha. Gary Sinise lends his voice to the Captain America Smithsonian exhibit as narrator.
    Co-directors Joe and Anthony Russo were untested filmmakers who landed the plum gig after Kevin Feige saw their two-episode stint on the TV sitcom "Community"! Nevertheless, the brothers knocked this film out of the park and were tapped again to continue guiding the good Captain's adventures down the line. The action sequences are phenomenally staged but grounded enough that you feel the weight of each impact and only realize you're watching a superhero film when Steve intermittently exceeds human limits. The opening hostage rescue, the Fury ambush, the sniper attack, the elevator brawl, the Quinjet takedown, the freeway chase, the underpass shoot-out and the climactic Triskelion assault are all top-tier set pieces that are thrilling to watch! Despite wall-to-wall action, there is enough downtime to prevent fatigue, to advance plot like Hydra's insidious long-game and to build character like Steve's bedside scene with a senile Peggy. I especially like the use of the real-life 'Operation: Paperclip' in which 1,500 Nazi scientists and engineers were granted immunity and recruited by the CIA's precursor, the OSS, to work for the US government. In the film, Hydra scientists like Arnim Zola use the opportunity of this brain-drain to embed themselves in SHIELD from its very inception.

    I Love All the MCU Movies. But CAPTAIN AMERICA 🇺🇸 , The Winter Soldier has GOT to be My Favorite! Like you said, it has a lot of plot Twists, and an INSANE Amount of ACTION! 💥

    Dasha, I just want to say I really enjoy your reactions to these Marvel movies. When I watched these movies, I watched them on my own, on a laptop. At the time I didn't know anything about the Reaction community on UA-cam. Because I love these movies so much and as a female, seeing other women react the same way I did makes me feel like a Kindred spirit instead of a geeky old lady that likes comic book films.

    I paid Marvel three times to watch *The Winter Soldier.* Robert Redford selected an unknown Scarlett out of hundreds for his film 'The Horse Whisperer'.* Steve Rogers and Natasha at their peak performance. The attempted assassination of Fury. Steve escaping S.H.I.E.L.D. was amazing! The Falcon and Winter Soldier friendship started with Bucky stealing Falcon's steering wheel.     It's my favorite Marvel movie..I have the DVD...and casting Robert Redford, one of history's greatest actors as the villan was genuis. Love the way they stuck to the original graphic novel published in 2002

    3:55 Yes, it's a gun. Not a model I'm familiar with, but probably a pretty good one.
    18:25 Not new. She was in the first Avengers movie, will be in the second as well and is a recurring character in the Agents of SHIELD TV show (which if you can find it you should totally watch, as it fills in a lot of details between the movies and you'll get more of Fury and Coulson as well as some entertaining new characters.

    Robert Redford (Pierce) played the lead in Three Days of the Condor, a 1975 movie where he plays a CIA analyst on the run from the CIA after stumbling onto a top secret CIA plot. It was one of the inspirations for this movie and why they cast Redford.
    After WWII the US government recruited a bunch of Nazi scientists, most notably Werner von Braun, a rocket scientist, to work for the US so we could stay ahead of the Soviet Union technologically. They didn't delve to deeply into backgrounds of the scientists they recruited because national security was more important to them that, y'know, whether they were moral monsters. In a superhero version of world history, it's no surprise that someone like Zola would have been recruited to work for nan organization like SHIELD, then use that access to infiltrate HYDRA into SHIELD.
