Getting laid off from my corporate job was the best that ever happen to me. I started doing UA-cam, playing out more with my band, selling comics and other collectibles on the side, and found a fun day job with flexible hours and decent pay. The jobs are out there! You’ll be good brother!

@@paulwoodford1984 I disagree. If it helps you tide over until you are strong/capable enough to pursue your passion, a corporate job is a blessing. Where else can you get paid a substantial coin for doing the least amount of work, while you focus on doing what you want to outside of work? It has helped millions over the years and that's what a corporate job should amount to: something to survive off . Not an aspiration to work for someone else.

I can give some insight in terms of the UA-cam side of things. The revenue you described is spot on what I would have assumed. RPM for most channels right now is about $5.50, so 4500 views a day would equate to $24.75. A lot of channels run an ad every 5ish minutes, so if you aren't already, you could run midrolls to increase your RPM. That being said, I don't recommend investing time and money into trying to convert a comic channel into a career. The genre is way, way too small on UA-cam. Even the big channels you described aren't making notable ad revenue. Comic Tropes is likely earning $36 per day, Comic Tom $42, Gem Mint $43. There simply aren't enough viewers interested in comics to give a reasonable return on your time via ads. All of those channels rely on donations through patreon/memberships or selling stuff like merch, mystery boxes, whatnot etc and even then, I wouldn't call it a long term solution.

@@ghostieo RPM (how much UA-camrs make per 1000 views on ads) is fairly consistent across the platform. Use socialblade to see everyone's monthly views then do the math. Gem had a upper position day job. Tom is a comic dealer.

Sorry to hear about your job loss. You are still at an excellent age to rebound. And those 7 years were not for nothing, they gave you all kinds of experience. You may have to make sacrifices, but great things can come out of that. I've been there. I lost my dream job once and never went back because it was also tied too much to the economy. What I do now pays very well, but it was never my life's ambition. I found that it is not until we are at the bottom of the barrel that we truly find ourselves and our capabilities. Wishing you the best of luck in your job search. Thank you for the video and for sharing yourself.

Good luck man. I was there when my hospitality/software company let me go 2 days after my 5 year anniversary. After scrambling around for 9 months, they actually asked me to come back and then the ball was in my court and I got to get my way instead of starting back at the bottom. I just recently left them at my 10 year anniversary to focus more on the comic industry (just in time for the dip...), but so far so good. At the very least, maybe you can get some unemployment and you got a decent severance package. Keep looking forward!

A little over 20 years ago, after close to 20 years in the environmental field, I was in a similar situation. I had been married for several years, and also had two kids and a mortgage. I took a menial day job and started taking night classes at a local college. In less than two years, I became a certified high school science teacher. I am now in my 19th year as a teacher, and hoping to retire in another year or two. If I could reinvent myself in my early 40’s, you can do it too (and you are only in your late 20’s). Put your energy and passion to work, and you will find yourself in a better situation soon. Opportunity is knocking, now answer the door! Good luck on whatever you decide to do.

Same boat as you brother; I worked for many years for the mortgage arm of a global bank. Just got word of layoffs last week, my last day is 12/30. I can’t say I’m surprised as the new loan volume has hit rock bottom, but of course the roll out of the announcement was a bit of a debacle, to say the least.
I am taking the news as a way to reset a few things. I’ve been scaling back my collecting for a while now, my wife has a good job and we have savings and I’ll get a severance, but my focus is finding another job and just looking to move forward with as positive an attitude as possible, ideally outside of the mortgage industry.

You'll push through man! If you're making 2 to 3 vids a week and bringing in about $30 a day right now, that's solid. I was pushing out 5 to 6 videos a week and was making about $30 a day. But ever since a certain situation happened a few months back, UA-cam has blackballed me, shot down my impressions, and I'll be lucky if I hit $20 a day now. I think you're doing everything right with your channel, but of course you can always evolve it, but at least you have this to supliment currently.
I graduated from college right before COVID hit, graduated cum laude with 3 degrees, and no one would hire me. I took a sports director job at a school making .50 cents above minimum wage. Then I was laid off due to COVID, and went all in with UA-cam, and now I'm teaching as well, which is a passion for me. The point? Sometimes we do make the best of the worst situation, and I have the utmost faith in you.
You're one of the good ones here, James. You got a solid community behind you.

My entire time in the workforce (30-plus years) has been one reinvention after another. I've gone from teaching, to journalism, to web design and development, back to teaching, to my current area in education technology. Each change has been triggered by a job loss, with a need for change sometimes sprinkled in. As result, I was never at the same job for more than two years until my current job in which I'll be starting my 11th year later this month, and one in which I hope will be my final job with retirement on the horizon. It's been a struggle along the way, but it's also been an adventure that has taken me through a variety of fields in different parts of the country. And as I've discovered with my current situation, job losses, while difficult, can often lead to new and better opportunities that you never knew were possible.

Even as a casual viewer of your channel it is obvious that you bring a passion and joy to any subject you tackle. Bring that joy to what presents itself to you and you will be fine. And don’t be afraid to let go of some comics or statues. They are all replaceable. Losses are temporary. Losing family is not, so stay committed to loved ones and to a lesser extent…. Remember that we in the comic book community are here as a shoulder to lean on. Semper Fi brother.

Between storms, thieves, and interest rates, you've had a really tough run lately...and still stay positive. I feel like banking on UA-cam in such a small niche as comics is almost impossible. The few people who can basically won the lottery. Chris from Comics Tropes was still a used car salesman up until a year or two ago. Every now and then I do come across channels I've never even heard of with hundreds of thousands of subscribers and I'm mystified. But I think mostly they generated that audience talking more about comics movies with the actual comics as just an aside. On the other hand, I don't know if you ever stream on Twitch (I don't), but there are people there who do quite well with only a fraction of your subscriber base. It can be a time-consuming venture (like everything else) but maybe worth checking out while you have a little time. Ditto for pursuing your art. You know this, but you don't need a huge portfolio to get work so much as just a few solid samples of sequential storytelling. So if you put together a few 8-page submissions just in your spare time, you never know what might happen. You could even stream yourself while working on them and thus create content in the process. Regardless, you seem to have the skills to land other good job opportunities. It's just when something like this happens the initial uncertainty can feel overwhelming.

It took me 2 months to start in my new job & another more, to get my first pay check. At least you got your channel for some support, I didnt, My savings got obliterated, I thought I'd sell my figures. Good luck, man, rooting for you. You'll get through this.

I can 100% relate to you my friend. I got laid off two years ago and from that point, I decided to start my own comic book publishing company SECOND SIGHT PUBLISHING. It's not easy but it's something I'm happy with. Stay strong my friend.

Man that sucks! Keep your head up. We have all been laid off in life at one point or another. Sometimes it's the best thing that has happened to you but you don't realize it at the time. The shock factor sometimes cloud your vision when your first let go.

James I’m sorry to hear about your current situation, I do wish you the best in whichever future endeavor that you pursue. I’m not too sure what you’re degree is in, but I would encourage you to look through civilian base jobs that are available with the VA. As I know they are always hiring for the DoD in many sectors. Regardless, you seem like a bright individual and I got a lot of confidence that you’ll do well in whatever you pursue. Keep that chin up and wish you the best.

I wanted to open a comic book shop when I was a kid as well. That didn't happen but I have over 12,000 books and have had a ton of fun over the years, reading, collecting, cataloguing (satisfies the OCD), and now watching the various cinematic universes. You'll land on your feet, I'm sure of it.

Sorry to hear about the change in your financial situation. I went through a similar situation about 7 years ago. I ended up going into reselling. Finding stuff to buy at garage sales, and other local avenues. No need to open a brick and mortar store. I would recommend getting yourself on Whatnot to sell. They will offer you no seller fees (10% fee savings). You'll end up paying .30 per transaction plus 2.9% fee. That's only for your first month unless you can work something out with them. A lot of people are quitting their 9 to 5 to sell on Whatnot. I think the freedom it gives you would give you the time to pursue the things you want to do.

let's be real though, the mortgage industry was one of the principal driving forces of the financial crisis in 2007 / 2008. And now with the extremely inflated housing costs where working class people can't even afford a starter home anymore.

Love the channel and thank you for your contribution to the comic books community and most importantly keeping a level head and positive even during some really hard times man.
I’ve been through this too, In fact multiple times…And it’s sucks. What I learned from times like this is go through the motions… ALL OF IT! Mad sad, denial, everything! Just as long as you go through it. If compensation is important, you would make it your job to get a job. Don’t get complacent to not work. People can slip into the void and like not working. On average with a lot of work and time, it takes about 2 months to land a job. Good luck man and pulling for you.

Jeez - that sucks! One thing I did which really helped my anxiety was to do a burn rate with unemployment and current savings (while cancelling all recurring charges I could). It's never fun cutting spending to the bone, but you'll be surprised how long you can last on unemployment if you get 'oh shit' serious about spending. That burn rate can help you get over the initial flush of emotions from change in your life. What others have said is spot on, too - take a while to just breathe. And good luck!

Being laid off was a great thing for me. I tried different things. I even got my CDL and went over the road for awhile. I finally found a job with the local hospital and I have never been happier. I know it’s scary but keep your head high keep pushing forward and you will land a job you will love. Know your fans are here for you.

I got let go from my mapping/analysis job Sept 2018, always wanted to try teaching, did the sub gig while putting out resumes for a year in a half, with some part time gigs coming and going. It was rough, but found a similar full time gig with mapping/surveying Jan 2020. With all that being said, not having a full time job gave me the opportunity to try other things, and that was the silver lining.
Maybe try to do more videos, I don't even want to get into slabbing any of my comics, but here I am watching your vids. You have a good and engaging style. You also don't talk down to the audience, which is huge!
Hope you can do the same with your creative endeavors, or just figuring stuff out.
