The City of Los Angeles Department of Water and Power is the largest Municipality in the world, and it was the best 14 years of my 40 years in IBEW. I worked for non-union, all the way through various Union Contractors, and multiple Utilities like Benton County REA in Prosser Washington. To the Bonneville Power Administration OSBP Pasco, WA. IBEW International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. I've Been EveryWhere. I'm Broke Every Winter! Hahaha Indeed I am well traveled, Local 42 in Connecticut, Local 1049 Long Island, Local 659 Oregon, local 125 Portland OR, Local 77 Seattle. Linework is not for everyone. But if you're like me, and love excavating with a shovel, building powerlines might interest you. Especially if you like climbing. Imagine yourself standing in your hooks up on the power pole, drilling holes clear through it with a brace and bit, in order to land a 700 pound transformer, in a back yard with block and tackle, and a ninety pound gin that you install by hand at the top of the pole using all your strength. It's glorious. And it pays well. The last raise from our Union contract put me at sixty dollars an hour. That's a six figure income without working any overtime. Dude. If you can't live on that, you must be inLA ha! Then I retired, November 2018. That physical work hurts after you get stoved up with arthritis at 60 years of age. I've been in charge before, throughout my travels. The Water and Power superintendent wanted to make me a foreman there. I declined to promote. I like staying in the tools. I did not want to deal with being in charge. I love to dig with my shovel. I am now retired and LADWP is wiring me a pension into my checking account every month. It's nice. Since then I have been digging in my Rock Garden using my shovel, to keep my cardio vascular system running. Men who spend 40 years hard labor, will die soon, if they stop moving. Curling up in front of a TV is a death sentence for me. I know this first hand, I don't need any outside professional verification. Too many that I have worked/fought/argued with are now dead because of this phenomenon. It is an honest living. The biggest problem is being proud of yourself. I am ripped. Great physique. God hates a proud heart. My best medicine is a dose of humility. Back on topic, the Department needs water workers and power workers. The key word here is work. I did see some employees who were interested in doing as little as possible for their pay. Don't be like that. I won't like you. Thanks.
I'm Certified and experienced and I have applied 2 times to that position but the test have questions that a current utility worker would know because there are out of date questions or pertain to "how the city of LA" welds a 24" main or perform welding repairs to a leak.. give me a chance but they hire family hr friends..
that looks very interesting! My Name is Christian and i'm from Germany. I learned the job as a Water Utility Worker for three and a half years from the year 2009 to 2013 in school. and now i have over 5 years experience in my work. I'm thinking about to work and life in the USA but it's very difficult to find companys that support my project.
Not really just construction experience and having a class B or a class A driving license along with a minimum of a Treatment 1 Distribution 1 and look for job openings.
You need D2 and a class A cdl atleast... and know everyone in HR.. because I've been trying for 5 years and I have experience with D3 and T2 with a class A
@@MrJugg101 That's not totally accurate. You only need a class B. A D2 is a plus but not a requirement at the time of hiring. Getting in as a Water utility worker might be tough. You should test for "Maintenance and Construction Helper" Some of those test might be coming out next summer. You'll actually make more money in the long run by being an MCH for one year and then promoting after. Have you taken the Water Utility Worker test already?
Any advice to a young guy here what can i do to get an opportunity here without the experience i want to gain the experience but dont have any background on it. Thanks Guys
same thing here man. I’m currently a plumber, but getting a job in the city is a hardddd. I heard you need a connection or know someone to get you in. But just do your research or if you see a worker out on the streets, ask him a few questions about what steps to take!
First thing to do is to be a certified Distribution operator/Treatment operator. Check out State water resource control board about the application requirements and testing. I recommend taking a class to prepare you for the test. You can get a D1 or T1 with a high diploma. They go up to level 5. The requirements change. Pass and apply to a local agency to get experience. Build up your resume and certification. Create a profile under governmentjobs.com to start applying to agencies. BC water jobs have postings of openings. Best wishes
