It's actually pretty impressive how they literally burn dried shit in order to power the plant. There should have been a commentary on how strong the smell was at each step.
hm, i think they simply burn the methane release by human excrement, the only by products are water, CO2 and heat. The only downside of CO2 is that it is a greenhouse gas.
I'm extremely impressed with these systems precisely because they're such an essential part of life we take completely for granted and don't even think about.
+Conor Somers One of our pumps managed to get a full set of wheels from a car stuck in it one by one. You find all sorts of stuff stuck in the machines, unfortunately (but thankfully very rarely) you find corpses.
I went for a quick late night jog to relieve some stress , and there is a raw sewage treatment where the road is. I was maybe 15 feet away, the smell got in my throat, so I just tried not to breathe, then on the other side of the road was some kind of roadkill. The roadkill smelt like warm rotting meat sitting in a summer dumpster that got sprayed with perfume.. The combination made me heave like so hard I thought my eyes were going to shoot from my sockets.. So terrible.
+Sebizzar Hahaha yeah, I now go in the day.. Screw that at night, saw two big Green eyes in my path about 70 feet away and just dart into the woods, and It seems they process the sewage only at night for some reason.
On a few of our treatment sites, the bacteria and chemicals used during the process can, in fact, cause mutations for animals within the surrounding area. proper niceeeee
I worked in a similar plant, most of the time it smells like wet soil, especially near the aeration tanks. The sludge handling areas have a much more foul odour, and I would typically hate myself for the time I was in that part of the plant.
wow that's awesome it's bio degraded !! and shit is burned to provide 75 % of the power for that place! cool nope i didn't know that :D learn somethin new every day
Really clean, I was with my collage at one of such facilities, I was quite fascinated how much care they give to details. Plus, the byproduct is natural gas and artificial fertilizer.
Well not everywhere has good sewerage but yes that's the standard practice. Oh and one tidbit they didn't mention is that during high rainfall the drainage systems are overloaded, to prevent floods the untreated sewage is discharged directly into rivers.
For my AP (like an American-only IB class) Environmental Science class, we went to a water treatment/sanitation plant here in St Paul, Minnesota- very similar, but on a much smaller scale!
If sludge is used for fertilzer for the farming of food products, how do they remove the toxic chemicals used in products such as laundry detergent, drain cleaners/uncloggers and so on?
God bless that man for talking with his mouth wide open right next to that nasty germ infested sewage that probably smells horrible so we can learn this information. And God bless him more if at anytime off the recording of this video, the wind blew some of that sewage up into his face/mouth. ~
Jeff, if you only knew that all of the worlds water has been someones pee at some point in the millions of years earth has had life on it and earth has been cleaning the water itself :D

It's horrible that things are still like that there. Everyone should be safe in today's day and age. Prayers that it gets straight once and for all. It's sad to see it knowing the horrible effects of has on health and quality of life. 🙏🙏🙏
A major part of the sewage clean-up process could (and in some cases, does-) involve the removal of most all the organic solids, in the form of sludge which could feed anaerobic digesters, where the decomposition of solids produces (releases) about 3 parts CO2 per one part methane.. Thus, nearly every thing one would need to produce large volumes of high lipid (biofuel) algae. The surplus methane could power generators to operate proper spectrum grow lights for night time operation. Unfortunately, the EPA has laws against such carbon-capture use of digester (waste gas) CO2.. The fossil fuel industry has "protection" in high places.
+neanam m Digesters don't smell. Properly functioning, their contents, sludge/gasses, etc, are completely contained inside the digester, since the gases (methane) are flammable, and leakage is dangerous. Of course, there can be "open" processes around such facilities that can smell.
+Carl Lelandt (I'm referring to "anaerobic" digesters.). Interestingly, when anaerobic digesters are shut down and opened up for cleaning/maintenance, they smell is that of used motor oil, such as that drained from ones car motor, at least with the ones I worked around.
And in India, our maids keep tap open in full speed for 1 hour as an average to wash utensils. We wash our balconies, entrance floor with high speed water pipes instead of just cleaning by broom. Our maids and gaurds waste water on every day and nobody even thinks about it.
Thanks to all the sewage workers. You all deserve major respect!
True

yeah lets repect for this people for what they've done
Why do they deserve respect?

It's called Biomass energy
So where's my sleeping goldfish.
lmaoo, I was just thinking about that.

Raw sewage is sent to a holding tank in Hollywood, where it serves as an inspiration to television writers.
David Lafleche underrated comment lmao

I've been to a treatment plan before, the smell is worse than you could imagine
Oh no
Maybe your phone smells like that
The local sewage treatment plant near my town does public TOURS. Trust me the smell is something you don’t forget for a long time.
@@elkillerx they do TOURS? Wtf?!
This guy's enthusiasm with the whole system - he absolutely loves it. It's funny and cool at the same time.
*trying to flush a car down the toilet*
Oh, you're probably wondering how I got here.
Pixel XDDDDDD
Lmaooo
Can you imagine falling into one of those tanks?
It was the car from My friendly Martian.
Probably a Toy car
I'm extremely impressed with these systems precisely because they're such an essential part of life we take completely for granted and don't even think about.
Wow. Excellent job! Nice to see that the water gets cleaned. I had always thought that the sewage pipes went straight to the ocean.
Some pipes do...sorry
Burger which ones
LeDank James storm drains go straight to the ocean
They used to for a very long time in history and probably still do in developing countries. But in most western countries they're treated!
In most developing countries, raw sewage goes straight to the rivers which is even worse.
Half a car? I've heard of people shitting bricks but half a car?! Half a fucking CAR?!

One of our pumps managed to get a full set of wheels from a car stuck in it one by one.

we sure have come a long way from dumping our sewage from a bucket onto the street 150 years ago.
Like they still do in India ?
Ezra Brooks pretty much
@@googleaccount8652 Such a waste. They could use that for farming like Matt Damon did on Mars.
@frogthis They dump directly on the street itself. one less step
@frogthis So what about all the poo poo beaches they have? literally like cats except they rarely cover it up after finished.
I'm wondering if the host has some sort of disability, wherein he can't smell anything.
It actually doesn't smell so bad depending on where you are.
+Andrew K Yeah its really not all the bad.
In my opinon fresh vomit smells ten times worse.
Nw.Caffers True. Vomit is MUCH worse. Butyric acid has one of the worst smells I've smelt.

@Craig F. Thompson In actuality it is very foul and gassy.
He loves the smell what u on about best smell in his life.
Pretty sure hes use to it
he definitely would have a mask on now
Any mention of masks is just a trigger for anybody after the pandemic
I'm just I impressed by this entire system... Its so elaborate and every step has a purpose... Its pretty amazing
how did they flush half a car down the toilet ?
That's what I wanna know too.
They probably put it in a compactor, shredded it then flushed the remains down the toilet 1 at a time
+Joshua Guitar
Most likely it got in through an open sewer, not through a toilet.
Some of the sewers are easily big enough to fit a small car.

My dad worked at a sewage treatment plant and they would find aborted fetuses and such in that sorting machine thingy.
That's horrible who flushes dead babies down the toilet!!!! 😡
They should be buried instead!😡
Ugh
😢
I find that very hard to believe considering an "aborted fetus" is essentially a blood clot that wouldn't even be recognizable at a plant 🙄🙄🙄
that is so sad
"so you'll be pleased to know today process is alot more refined, IT JUST TAKES 4 HOURS TO BE PUMPED OUT TO THE RIVER" 😂😂😂😂
